Welcome to Ashmole Academy. I hope that our prospectus will help you make a decision about this vital stage in your child’s education.

Ashmole Academy is a co-educational comprehensive school, situated in Southgate, on the eastern boundary of the London Borough of Barnet. It was established in 1958 and from October 2010 Ashmole became an Academy. We have around 1490 pupils on roll with over 360 students in our Sixth Form. Every year the school is over-subscribed.

As Ashmole Academy, we value young people of all abilities and talents. We regard academic success as vital and work very hard to ensure that all children fulfil their true potential. We have high expectations for all our students. We expect hard work from each person and are rarely let down.

Ashmole Academy is also a caring school. We create an environment of tolerance and respect where the aspirations and responsibilities of individuals are emphasised. We expect our students to show care and respect for others.

Education is about preparing young people for their future. Our students leave school to go to university, college or to start a career in their chosen field of employment. To assist in the preparation for that future, the school has an extensive Sixth Form provision covering a wide range of courses, careers facilities and a well proven system for helping our young people with their university or college applications.

Ashmole is a forward looking school keen to strive for further improvements in the quality of education we provide. In 2002, the school was granted Specialist Science School status to which Specialist Music status was added in 2006, to reflect our commitment to achieve excellent examination results. In September 2004, Ashmole moved into new purpose built accommodation.

DOUBLE AWARDApplied Art and Design

The course is aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in Art and Design at degree level. This includes Graphic Design, Textiles and Fashion, Interior Design, Architecture, etc.

Students will be expected to work independently in their given work area during study periods as well as during timetabled lessons.

Students will be taught by 3 members of the Art Department.

Students will exhibit their work in the summer term, in both Years 12 and 13.

Students will have twice as many lessons per week. This course takes 2 A level options.

Course ContentThe Applied Art and Design course is offered as a double award (equivalent to 2 ‘A’ levels) over two years. To achieve the award students must complete these 12 units. This course will involve Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Printing, Textiles, Photography and Design. (Please note that this course provides the progression route towards Textiles and Fashion at higher level.)

AssessmentThere are no examinations as such in the course. Students will do 2 projects that are externally set themes in Year 13. These are done during term time and are not under examination conditions.

Work is continually assessed by teachers and moderated by a visiting moderator at the end of Year 13.

Work of a very high standard is expected from this popular and successful course.

Teaching StylesStudents will be taught by a team of teachers. The units are presented as projects. Some units will be fulfilled in different projects over the 2 years, others are covered only once.

Students will be expected to take responsibility for their own learning and progress and work very closely with the staff.

Students will also be expected to attend Life Drawing classes at Middlesex University.

Career OpportunitiesThe Applied Art and Design double award is primarily designed for students who have a passion for Art and Design and wish to continue their work into a degree course that is Art based i.e. Fine Art, Graphic Design, Textiles, Fashion, Interior Design, Decorative Design, Sculpture, Art Management, Restoration, Product Design, Architecture, Digital Imagery, Theatre Design, etc.

Students are also welcome to take this course if they just wish to develop their skills and understanding in more depth than ‘A’ level allows.

Course ContentThis is an applied science course which focuses in the practical aspects of science and its application in the workplace. It is equivalent to 3 A level courses. The course is suitable for students who wish to continue to study practical science.

The course consists of 6 core units:

1. Fundamentals of ScienceThis unit includes chemical reactions; structures in biological systems; types of energy and their interconversions; the basic principles of electricity and electromagnetic radiation.

2. Working in the Science IndustryThis includes how procedures are followed and information passed on in the laboratory; looking at the design of aworkplace with respect to its efficiency, effectiveness, safety and security; laboratory management information systems and a range of scientific computer applications; safe working practices in the laboratory.

3. Scientific InvestigationThis includes formulating a hypothesis and planning investigations; collecting, collating and analysing the results from the investigations using appropriate techniques and presenting them in an accepted format.

4. Scientific Practical TechniquesThis involves using appropriate methods to produce two chemical substances; using sampling techniques; using analytical methods; using appropriate instruments for scientific investigations.

5. Perceptions of ScienceThis includes looking at the development of scientific knowledge; understanding the public perception of science, as influenced by the media; identifying the ethical and moral issues associated with scientific advances; understanding the relationship between science, commerce and politics.

6. Application of Number for Science TechniciansThis involves using mathematical tools to process scientific data; classifying, measuring and recording scientific data.

AssessmentA final grade will be awarded at the end of the 2 year course. This will be either a pass (120 UCAS points) a merit (240 UCAS points) or a distinction (360 UCAS points).

The course is assessed in a variety of methods throughout the course rather than a terminal exam. Most units are internally assessed although some will be externally marked. The assessment will take the form of:

Portfolio work – consisting of assessment tasks set by the teacher

Laboratory reports – short practical write ups and longer investigations designed and implemented by the individualstudents

Practical Skills tests – teacher assessed in class.

Teaching StylesBTEC Science is taught in various styles which depend on the module being studied at the time. This includes Teaching led discussions, project work and independent research tasks.

Students will have access to several textbooks relevant to the course. Homework will be regularly set and will include writing up practical sessions, background reading and questions to consolidate in-class learning.

Throughout the course the students should acquire practical and study skills which will prepare them for either a job in the scientific industry or a science based course in higher education.

Career OpportunitiesThis is a suitable course for students who wish to go on to study other vocational qualifications in science such as BTEC Higher Nationals in Applied Biology, Applied Chemistry or Applied Physics or health-related or other science-related qualifications.

It is also a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment as a science technician or laboratory practitioner.

Teaching StylesTeam teaching offers students a variety of teaching styles, personalities and expertise. Teaching styles embrace formal whole class, informal and individual. The course also emphasises the importance of self directed student based research, experimentation and creative exploration, during study periods and homework, as well as within the classroom. Students are expected to participate in individual/group evaluation and review of their own and others work. Gallery visits are an important part of the course and attending a Life Drawing class at Middlesex University is encouraged.

Career OpportunitiesMany students following an Art A/AS course do not necessarily intend to pursue a specifically art based career. Some take the subject as an opportunity to develop a personal talent/interest, which they treasure, and as a way of enriching an otherwise academic course. Many degree courses can be accessed with Art as an ‘A’ level or ‘AS’ level. An ever-increasing number of combined degree courses feature art with another compatible subject, e.g. Media, History, English, Drama, Business Studies, European Studies, etc. There are also many specifically art based career opportunities, e.g. Graphic Design, Product Design, Advertising, Fashion, Landscaping, Architecture, etc.

Course ContentAS Biology is split into 3 units:

Unit 1 (AS): Lifestyle, transport, genes and healthHeart disease is one of the UK’s biggest killers—what makes it so common? You will learn more about the circulatory system and the kinds of lifestyle choices, such as diet and exercise, that put you more, or less, at risk of suffering from heart disease.

You will find out how some parts of the body work, for example, about the lungs and how materials are transported around the body, and the role of enzymes.

You will also learn about genetics and what can happen if errors occur during the replication of DNA, considering the social and ethical issues raised by genetic screening and gene therapy.

Unit 2 (AS): Development, plants and the environmentDo you know how you came to have your natural hair colour? You will learn that your physical characteristics have been determined by your genetic makeup and influenced by the environment. In doing so, you will learn some cell biology, about the two main types of cell division and the purpose of each type, and about sexual reproduction.

In this unit you will also learn about plants and their structure, and how the properties of some plants may be used to tackle issues such as sustainability.

Unit 3 (AS): CourseworkYou will produce a report on an application of Biology seen during a visit or an area of personal interest.

A2 Biology is split into 3 units:

Unit 4 (A2): The natural environment and species survivalGlobal warming and climate change are buzzwords that appear in media headlines and have been the source of much controversy and political divide. So which side are you on and why? You will learn about the different types of evidence for global warming

and the possible causes of it and the effect it will have on animals and plants. You will also learn about ecology, photosynthesis and speciation.

This unit covers the fascinating area of immunology—the war that goes on between our immune system and pathogens. You will learn what defences the body has against invading pathogens and how some micro-organisms, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, can get the better of use by attacking our defences. You will have the opportunity to look into the world of the forensic scientist and appreciate the application of scientific knowledge in this context.

Unit 5 (A2): Energy, exercise and coordinationAll mammals, including humans, have similar physiologies that facilitate movement. Why is it rare to find an athlete who is both a sprinter and a marathon runner? In this unit you will build on your knowledge about joints and movement, and learn more about the precise mechanism of skeletal muscle contraction, respiration and homeostasis in the context of exercise.

The brain is the most complicated and probably least understood organ in the body. It has the complex task of coordinating our bodily functions and movement, making sense of all the sensory information it receives, as well as storing our thoughts, emotions and memories. As the brain is such a complicated and vital organ, there is a lot of potential for it to go wrong which can have drastic effects on the brain and how these effects, in turn, affect the body and the mind.

Unit 6(A2): CourseworkYou will carry out an investigation and produce a written report on your findings.

AssessmentAssessment of Unit 1 will take place in January. The paper is 90 minutes long and counts for 40% of your AS grade.

Assessment of Unit 2 will take place in June. The paper is 90 minutes long and counts for 40% of your AS grade.

The papers will contain objective questions, short questions and longer questions.

Unit 3 is coursework. Your written report will count for 20% of your AS grade.

Units 4 and 5 are externally assessed written examination papers each lasting 90 minutes. The papers will contain objective questions, short questions and longer questions.

Unit 6 is coursework. You will use the skills that you have gained to plan and carry out an experimental investigation based either in the laboratory or an ecological study of your choice.

Teaching StylesIn biology you develop practical skills, by planning experiments, collecting data, analysing experimental results and making conclusions. You will also learn how scientific models are developed, the applications and implications of science, the benefits and risks that science brings and the ways in which society uses science to make decisions.

Career OpportunitiesBiology opens the doors to a wide range of careers including: Doctor, Vet, Ecologist, Genetisist Researcher, Conservationist, Teacher.

Teaching StylesBusiness studies is an interesting but challenging subject that is constantly changing due to the diverse nature of the business environment, bearing in mind the national and international elements. Due to this students are encouraged to use all sources of business information, going beyond the textbook to events reported in the media and personal knowledge from work experience.

Students are expected to show initiative, develop the ability to analyse and evaluate business problems, and make reasoned decisions justified by use of their theory knowledge.

Case studies and documentaries are used as a teaching resource as well as occasional visits.

Throughout the course, in order to acquire an awareness and

understanding of the applications and limitations of Information Technology, students will be given appropriate access to the use relevant IT applications.

Career OpportunitiesAs a subject Business Studies offers an interesting option to those students who wish to broaden their subject choices.

Students can proceed to a degree in pure Business studies, or can be linked with other areas of interest eg Marketing, Human Resources Management, Finance, Event Organising, Media Studies, Politics, Law and Economics.

In addition, a qualification in Business Studies can be used as a basis for further study in continuing education for professional qualifications ie Management courses, Finance, Teaching, Banking and Technology.

Course ContentSalters Advanced Chemistry aims to show the ways in which Chemistry is used and the work that Chemists do. The course includes looking at the frontiers where the latest developments are taking place with basic chemical principles drawn from modern applications in industry, everyday life and in the environment.

In addition to this basic syllabus, students are required to

perform assessed practicals in Year 12 followed by an individual investigation in Year 13.

The school timetable allocates 8 periods of AS level Chemistry and 8 periods of A2 level Chemistry over the 2-week cycle although lessons frequently extend beyond this time.

Students are provided with 2 course books in conjunction with a pack containing data and target sheets. Many students subscribe to a monthly magazine that provides both background and also up to date information on all aspects of chemistry.

Course Content: Students will learn how to use their knowledge and understanding of theatrical forms to explore and perform plays. They will learn how plays relate to the contexts in which they are created and performed.

Students will also study the ways in which plays are interpreted by different directors, designers, performers and audiences and will need to acknowledge that drama and theatre texts have a range of meanings.

A minimum of six plays will be studied. This will include an in-depth study of a play from the point of view of a director, the research into the production history of a second play and the undertaking of the role of a performer or designer within the production process of a third play.

They will also be asked to create an original play using the devising process and use the appropriate theatrical terms and concepts in describing their experiences.

Students will be given the opportunity to visit the theatre over the two years of the course and see a wide variety of drama in performance.

Content Summary:

This unit introduces students to the content of plays written for the theatre. Students will learn how to analyse plays in a variety of ways so that they become familiar with the way written plays can be interpreted for realisation in performance.

Assessment:

This internally assessed unit requires students to explore two contrasting play texts, chosen by the school, in a practical and active way.

At least one of the plays must be explored in the light of a recognised theatre practitioner.

A set of Exploration Notes must be submitted.

Students are also required to experience a live theatre performance and submit an evaluation.

Content Summary:

This unit offers students the chance to demonstrate skills in a performance environment. The knowledge and understanding gained during the study of two plays in Unit 1 can now be applied with a view to delivering a performance to an audience.

Assessment:

This is an externally assessed unit. The first section requires students to offer either a monologue or duologue.

The second section requires students to contribute to a performance of a professionally published play by a known writer.

Students may offer either acting or a design form and must also provide a concept of the interpretation of their chosen roles or designs.

Content Summary:

This externally examined written unit requires the detailed study of one set play text and one prescribed historical period of theatrical development.

Assessment:

This externally assessed unit takes the form of a 2 ½ hour written paper in three sections.

Sections A and B require students to explore one play, from a choice of three set play texts, from the point of view of a director in both an academic and practical way.

In Section C a selection must be made of one from a choice of three historic periods of theatre history. A live performance of a play from the chosen period must be experienced and evaluated and a comparison made with the original staging conditions of the play.

We promote the constructing of drama as a means of enquiry and communication and to encourage critical analysis through the making of informed judgements as part of the drama process.

Teaching StylesStudents must be fluent and enthusiastic readers as they embark upon the course. The course demands that students build upon the experience and organising of thoughts begun through GCSE coursework and examination.

Lessons will involve individual and group work as well as one-to-one tutorials with teachers to discuss progress. It is vital that students develop oral skills through participation in discussion of

ideas and text in order to stimulate a greater understanding.

The techniques of note-making, reading skills and essay construction are taught and practised. Planning and drafting of coursework is an essential part of appreciation, as is their developing knowledge of specialist critical vocabulary.

While the course is based on set texts, students will need to explore literature through access to related texts and through our use of audio and visual material. A section in the school library is being built up to provide wider-reading and research opportunities.

You can use the laser cutter, CAD/CAM hand tools, working with papier-mâché, wood, card, foamboard etc… Students make a replica of an architectural model based upon a structure they like. E.g. London Bridge, Huf Haus, etc.

Teaching StylesStudents will have a special designated area and a workshop to work in during free periods and study sessions, which is just for the sixth form. Lockers and individual shelving will be provided so that practical work can be stored. During this time tools and equipment can be used, and a booking in system for extra help and support with the technician is also provided. 25 computers and an A3 colour printer are also available.

Course ContentThe aim of the Media Studies course is to:

Enhance candidates understanding of how the media communicate to audiences

Develop critical thinking about mass communication systems globally, nationally and locally

Develop the relationship between theory and how practical exploration can benefit student understanding

Give students opportunities to use and exploit new technologies

Students who have not studied this course at BTEC (or GCSE in other schools) must not feel that they are excluded from taking this subject. Students bring a great wealth of knowledge from their own experience and will be able to adapt their understanding of contemporary media. Prospective students MUST, however, understand that there are a huge number of demands made upon them in this very creative subject. This is especially true of the time commitment that must be made.

AssessmentWeekly/internal assessment is made using the AQA’s criteria. Each week an essay, a practical assignment and a research exercise is set across the two teachers who are delivering the course. A formal assessment is made at the end of the autumn term and one at the end of the spring term.

ASMEST1 – INVESTIGATING MEDIA

In this unit, students are asked to study two topic areas and explore how film, TV, print media and e-media contribute to how the text/texts are enjoyed and consumed by media audiences. Students spend a great deal of time researching and carrying out investigations into texts across the media and how they

communicate lifestyles, messages and values. This unit is externally assessed through a 2-hour examination. Part A consists of 4 short answer responses and Section B requires a written essay.

MEST2 – CREATING MEDIA 50% AS/25% A2

In this unit students produce two linked pieces of media from two of the three media platforms (TV/film and/or print and/or e-media). Through MEST1 they will have carried out research and investigation into how the media works. The students’ job is now to bring an original media production to life, emanating from solid research but also tapping into students’ individual interests. The portfolio will consist of a pre-production and post-production written review and analysis.

A2MEST3 – MEDIA: CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES

The central aim of this unit is to allow candidates to develop a holistic understanding of the Media Studies specification. Students will be expected not only to analyse and evaluate the way that media texts work and are consumed but to also look at what factors affect media production such as social, economic and political factors. In this way, Media Studies becomes a much wider and richer investigation of the relationship between TV, film, print, radio and e-media and the whole world. To this end, students are asked to consider why a text is the way it is and what has influenced its production. The exam is split into 2 sections; Section A consists of an unseen stimulus text which asks the student to respond to it. Section B, demands that students answer a question on a set topic through an essay.

MEST4 – MEDIA: RESEARCH AND PRODUCTION50% AS/25% A2

This is a synoptic unit where students have to carry out a critical investigation on a topic of their choice. They then have to produce two linked pieces of media that they produce as a response to the research undertaken. They have to employ critical debates, theories and issues and apply them to the texts that they are creating. Teaching StylesThe new AS and A2 Media Studies specification demands a different approach to the previous syllabus. There is much more scope for autonomy and independence and, therefore, greater research and investigation takes place. Students are ‘guided’ through a series of tasks and the teacher becomes that of facilitator. Consequently, students will be expected to drive their own curiosity.

As well as taught sessions, students are encouraged to produce practical assignments within a time frame and to undertake methodical and purposeful research. Some lessons are delivered in a lecture style. Therefore, a variety of methods are used. Home/extension work is the key to a students’ success and is set three times a week.

Career OpportunitiesThere are a huge number of opportunities that this course can lead to. Careers in media are only one of the multiplicity of routes available. Jobs and futures may be pursued in teaching, product design, marketing, etc, as well as a wide range of other posts in the arts and humanities field. Course ContentAS and A2 French, German and SpanishBoth AS and A2 comprise two units. Units 1 and 3 are combined Listening, Reading and Writing examinations. Units 2 and 4 are Speaking Tests of 35 minutes, including preparation time. Key features of the written papers include student-controlled Listening material at both levels, a variety of Listening and Reading stimuli, and candidate choice in the selection of topics for the Writing section. There’ll be a choice of questions for the Cultural topic at A2. The Speaking Tests have two parts - a discussion of a language stimulus card and a conversation.

For AS, topics include, television, cinema, music, fashion trends, health and well-being and family and relationships. For A2, candidates must study two Cultural topics together with the Environment, the Multicultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues. For the Cultural topic, students will look at an aspect of a French/German/Spanish speaking country and study a book or films by a French/German/Spanish author or film maker.

There are also Language Bursaries and opportunities for Work Experience abroad which students are strongly advised to consider during their course.

Course ContentThe Year 12 course contains three units:

Unit 1 – Performing music (30% of total AS marks/ 15% of total GCE marks)

The students perform a solo and as part of an ensemble. Students may choose to perform in any style as part of a 5 – 6 minute assessed performance.

Unit 2 – Composing (30% of total AS marks/ 15% of total GCE marks)

Students develop their composition skills which culminate in the creation of a three minute piece in response to a chosen brief. Students also write a CD sleeve note as part of the assessed work.

Unit 3 – Developing musical understanding (40% of total AS marks/ 20% of total GCE marks)

Students develop their historical, theoretical and listening skills in this unit. They study set works from the anthology, analysing scores. They must also write simple harmonic passages for SATB.

The Year 13 course contains three units:

The students perform a solo and as part of an ensemble. Students may choose to perform in any style as part of a 12 - 15 minute assessed programme of music.

This is the further development of compositional skills from Unit 2 and harmony skills learnt in Unit 3. Students complete one composition and one technical study.

Course ContentThe Edexcel Physics specification provides the basis of an innovative course designed to engage and inspire students. It begins with a study of the laws, theories and models of Physics and finishes with an exploration of their practical applications. Teaching StylesPhysics is an exciting subject, providing insight into the world around us. It has been developed by some of the greatest minds through the ages, with brilliant breakthroughs even in the last few years.

Physics is practically based, requiring experimental skills but also theoretical understanding.

Physics, like the other sciences, is a practical subject, and students therefore spend a considerable proportion of their time conducting their own experiments or learning from demonstrations. A successful Physicist must be able to draw conclusions from experimental results as well as learning from textbooks, videos and computer programs. There are usually two Physics teachers for each group, each of whom will set at least one homework assignment each week.

Career OpportunitiesPhysics is a highly regarded subject for higher education and many technical careers. It is essential for many areas of engineering, medicine and science. It is really useful for subjects such as Computing, Architecture, Geology, Teaching and even finance and business. Some people spend their whole lives researching in pure Physics, perhaps working on the particle accelerators at CERN, or using the giant telescopes and complex theories of Astrophysics.

Course Content: AS level (Year 12)

Unit 1:

Memory: Scientific models of memory, their strengths and weaknesses. How reliable is eye-witness testimony? Can memory be improved?

Child development: How children develop attachments to care-givers, and how this varies with culture. How adult relationships are affected by childhood attachment, and the effects of separation. Is day-care a good thing?

Research methods: The design of psychological studies and the interpretation of data. The relationship between researcher and participant

Unit 2:

Stress as a bodily response, and how our emotions affect our health. Stressful situations. How personality affects stress. Methods for coping with stress.

Differences between individuals: Recognising if behaviour is abnormal. Explanations for abnormality. Treating abnormality. Research into eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa.

Social Psychology: Belonging to groups, group behaviour, majorities and minorities, and why people obey. Independent behaviour and social change .

A2 level (Year 13)

Unit 3:

A choice of 3 topics studied in depth, from: Biological rhythms and sleep; Perception; Relationships; Aggression; Eating behaviour; Gender; Intelligence and learning; Cognition and development.

The choice of topics would take account of the preferences of the students.

Unit 4:

This Synoptic paper has three sections covering all the areas studied during the 2 year course. The sections are: Psychopathology (schizophrenia, depression, anxiety); Psychology in Action (Media psychology, Addictive behaviour, Anomalistic ie Paranormal psychology); the Scientific Method and psychological research.

AssessmentThese assess factual knowledge, analytic ability, and understanding of science. Each exam represents 25% of the total marks for the 2 year course.

AS Year 12Unit 1 and 2: Each has a 1½ hour exam, with compulsory structured questions including one 15 minute essay.

A2 Year 13Unit 3: 1½ hour exam, three 30 minute essay questions.

Unit 4: 2 hour exam, two forty minute essays, one structured question on science in psychology.

Teaching StylesThroughout the 2 years students are encouraged to develop as independent learners.

Psychology is the explanation of individual peoples’ behaviour. The syllabus covers an unusually wide variety of subject areas, ranging from up to date aspects of the biochemistry of the brain to some long established philosophical ideas such as free will. Consequently students will be encouraged to develop a range of approaches to learning. Sometimes a scientific approach might be best. But psychological questions are complex, and a common sense approach can be as useful as science. Students will be encouraged to use ideas and information from other subject areas (e.g. Sociology, Media Studies, Art, Biology, English, Computing, etc) when studying psychological topics. The exam board give credit for this broad approach.

The AS course covers a range of topics which are representative of Psychology as a whole. It is a valuable qualification in its own right, and provides a good foundation for the A2 course. It is shorter and easier than the A2 course. The topics covered are often relevant to news stories. A variety of teaching styles are used, including group projects, individual research, using the Internet, and designing and conducting psychological investigations.

The A2 course is designed to let students study and investigate theoretical and applied topics in more depth, and to help them gain an overall picture of Psychology. Teaching styles will vary according to the subject material and the student’s skills. A flexible approach to Psychology is important, for example when considering problems of cultural or gender bias, and when trying to decide what exactly is “abnormal” behaviour. Research methods that are useful for investigating one kind of psychological question might not work with a different problem.

Career OpportunitiesBoth the AS and A2 courses have a broad and balanced content and they are useful preparation for a wide variety of further courses and occupations. Psychology is one of the most popular courses at university, and it also forms part of many joint degrees. It is studied in many vocational training courses, such as for social work, teaching, business administration, etc.

Many psychologists are involved in academic research in university departments. Others work in a wide range of public and private organisations, for example in medicine, education, management consultancy, product design, advertising, etc Employers often value the improved knowledge and analytical skills which the study of Psychology encourages.

Progress in psychological research is currently rapid. Advances in genetics, brain scanning and artificial intelligence research are being applied to psychological questions, and the answers have important implications for society in future.

Unit A: Religion and Ethics 1

A study of the different ethical approaches to moral issues as well as the issues themselves e.g. euthanasia.

Unit C: Philosophy of Religion 1

A Study of different arguments for God’s existence with evaluation from psychology, atheism and post-modernism.

A2As with AS level two units will be studied focusing on Religious Ethics or Religious Philosophy

Unit 3B: Philosophy of Religion

A study of different arguments for and against God’s existence with analysis of religious language and whether it is possible to discuss God.

Unit 4c: Topic II Ways of Moral Decision Making

A synoptic unit drawing on ethical theories from AS Unit A which are applied to decisions made regarding medical research and developments.

AssessmentAS2 exams of 1 hour 15 minute – one on each Unit

A2Two exams of 1 hour 30 minutes – one on each Unit

Teaching StylesThe lessons regularly involve:

Note taking – an important skill both within and outside the classroom. Notes should be clear and concise, showing evidence of examples, explanation and evaluation.

Discussion – the ability to express your ideas clearly, and those of others, is a crucial skill in life and one that can be developed further in this subject.

Essay writing skills – essential for passing the exams but also useful for those who wish to improve their clarity and quality of written communication.

Reading – very important in and outside of lesson time. Newspapers, magazines are often very useful, as well as textbooks.

Other – videos, group work and presentations are encouraged and used where possible.

Career OpportunitiesStudying Religious Studies at A level forms superb preparation for further education, a variety of careers, as well as life in general.

The knowledge and understanding gained will be useful to anyone interested in going into, for example: journalism, law, medicine and the arts. In addition, the skills learned will be vital for anyone who wishes to work with people, or those who will have to make important decisions or form strong opinions. This might include, for example: the civil service; social or community work; publishing or broadcasting; business, industry and commerce; or education.

Course ContentThe A level Sociology specification has been designed so that students will acquire the essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological thought and methods, together with the application of a range of skills. It has also been designed to allow the integration of sociological themes, such as socialisation, culture and identity and social differentiation, power and stratification.

In the Stratification and Differentiation section students will study topics such as:-

Different theories of stratification, including stratification by social class, gender, ethnicity and age.

Dimensions of inequality – class, status and power; differences in life-chances by social class, gender, ethnicity, age and disability.

In the Theory and Methods section students will revisit AS topics and will study areas such as:-

Teaching StylesAn open and enquiring mind is required to follow this course. Students must be prepared to question evidence and enter into discussion. Students should make themselves aware of current social issues and therefore regularly read a serious newspaper in addition to textbooks and other publications.

A variety of teaching styles will be used. The student must be prepared to take initiative, work independently and as a member of a group. There will be discussion work in addition to note taking

Course ContentThis course is a practical introduction to statistics. It will teach students how to collect, analyse and describe data from a wide range of sources.

This includes:

How to sample data

How to calculate simple statistics which describe the data

Probability distributions (e.g. normal distributions)

How to measure the reliability of data

Comparing one set of data with another

How to test hypotheses using statistical methods

Throughout the course, the emphasis is on working with real data rather than the study of theoretical models.

This course is a good choice for students who wish to gain an AS or A Level qualification in a mathematical subject, but who may not wish to deal with a large amount of algebra.

AssessmentAS Year 12Stats 1 (JAN): Topics include statistical analysis of data, probability distributions {Binomial and Normal} and Correlation and regression.

Stats 2 (JUNE): Further probability distribution {Poisson and rectangular}, Hypothesis testing. Chi squared contingency tables.

Stats 3 (JUNE): Further probability {Baye’s Theorem}. Approximations to probability distributions. Further hypothesistesting.

A2 Year 13Stats 4 (JAN): Linear combinations of random variables. Estimation of variance and applications of hypothesis testing.

Stats 5 (JUNE): Geometric and exponential distributions.

Confidence intervals. Goodness of fit. Hypothesis testing for two independent samples.

Stats 6 (JUNE): Experimental design. Analysis of variance. Process control. Acceptance sampling.

Teaching Styles:Students will be taught in a variety of ways ranging from formal lessons and tackling written questions, to activities and demonstrations.

Students will use calculators and computer programmes to investigate probability distributions and to analyse statistical data. There is an emphasis on the use by students, of scientific calculators in SD-mode and linear regression mode to perform calculations.

Students’ progress is monitored by regular tests which help to uncover problems and which help students adjust to the standard of work expected at this level of study.

Career OpportunitiesThis course will be extremely helpful to anyone wishing to pursue a career in biological sciences, geography or social sciences. Degree courses in biology, genetics, psychology, geography, economics and social science are all likely to involve statistical methods and models, and this course will provide a solid background and introduction to these techniques.

In addition, those students intending to study Biology or Geography at ‘A’ level or ‘AS’ level should find that their work in those subjects is supported by the statistical techniques taught on this course.
