In 1948 a local couple by the name of Alexander and Stella Grierson had the vision to incorporate the Animal Welfare organisation they had developed around ten years earlier. They saw the need to not only provide refuge, care, advocacy and shelter for the local animals but to assist the owners of these animals. Without helping the people, you cannot help the animals. So became the Victorian Animal Aid Trust on March 16 1948. Their founding philosophy has been proudly carried through to today by the many staff and volunteers that make up Animal Aid as a whole. Animal Aid is not just one program, service or individual, it is constantly evolving and growing. Over the years it has become an effective, sustainable community resource that is supported by an ever-growing network of volunteers, staff and community supporters. The array of services and programs that Animal Aid provides would, we think, make the Griersons proud of what they established 60 years ago.

Welcometo a very

edition ofAnimal Aid News

Royal Canin Happy Birthday Animal Aid and congratulations on providing 60 years of high quality animal care.

At Royal Canin we are committed to providing a lifetime of care for companion animals. We have been manufacturing food for cats and dogs for more than 35 years throughout the world. The company’s reputation is based on the continued production of high quality, nutritious, safe, reliable and palatable products.

We have a long-standing commitment to ensure that our pet food products are manufactured to the very highest standards. All of our dry diets are 100% natural, containing human grade chicken, free from antibiotics and added hormones.

In the field of canine and feline nutrition, some manufacturers put the owners first and use them as the basis of all innovation. At Royal Canin our mantra is ‘Knowledge and Respect’, we put the dog and the cat at the heart of our process.

Animal Aid has many things in common with Royal Canin. They have an unrelenting desire to put the needs of the animal first, the ability to recognise that you need to look at the whole picture and they strive to achieve best practice in their field. This is why we have chosen to support them by donating super premium dry food. All the cats and dogs at the shelter receive the highest quality diet money can buy, freeing up valuable funds that would other wise be eaten up, literally.

For further information about Royal Canin please call us on 1300 657 028 or check out our website www.royalcanin.com.au

Tiffany Speight60th Birthday Ambassador As a child I loved dancing, appearing in school musicals including Oklahoma until I damaged my feet in a car accident. After meeting the late conductor Brian Tracey, I took up singing lessons at the Victorian College for the Arts.

I was awarded several scholarships including a Queen’s Trust Award, which enabled me to study in Paris and Kitty Fisher Gift awarded from the Australian Singing Competition held at the Sydney Opera House.

I lead a full, happy and varied life performing for Opera Australia, NBR New Zealand Opera, Victorian Opera, Queensland Opera, Melbourne and Sydney symphonies and a number of other companies throughout Australia. It is a thrill to reflect, after performing in Europe from winning the 2002 Vienna State Opera Award that I can base myself in Victoria, where I live with my husband, David Harrod, Production Manager of Victoria Opera, two cats and a goat. I have been aware of the fine work carried out by Animal Aid at their Coldstream shelter for a number of years. It is, therefore, with great pleasure, that I recently became an Ambassador for Animal Aid’s 60th Birthday celebrations. I acknowledge, with sincere thanks, the support provided to me and the arts companies I work for from many corporate and individual sponsors. My personal thanks, therefore, to all the Animal Aid major individual and corporate supporters – your assistance and support is essential and greatly appreciated!

Yours Sincerely Tiffany Speight 60th Birthday Ambassador

Courtney Quality print and design solutions

Happy 60th Animal Aid, from all the team at Courtney, keep up the good work!

For over 20 years Courtney Colour Graphics, now trading as Courtney, has been an established printing company based in Lilydale that prides itself on providing our customers with a complete service, from concept and design, through to the quality finished product.

Animal Aid has been an important customer of ours for around five years now. In that time it has been our pleasure to give them in-kind support to help them continue to grow their supporter base. Producing effective promotional material is vital for any business. Being able to inform the public of what sets you apart from your competitors and why a customer should come to you is the basis of any effective and successful marketing plan. This is what we help businesses do everyday.

Whilst we know how important these tools are, we also understand the financial restrictions that charities experience. Making funds available to produce quality newsletters and brochures has often been difficult for Animal Aid; funds that often could have been spent on pressing needs at their shelter. This is where we have been happy to chip in, offering our services free of charge on a wide range of stationery and other printed materials.

Corporate giving is the right thing to do. Putting money back into the community that drives your business forward makes a lot of sense.

For assistance with your marketing program contact us by phone 03 9735 5811 or look at our website www.courtneycolour.com.au

I have just taken over the reins of Animal Aid at a very exciting time. Not only is it our 60th birthday but we are in the unique position that we have the opportunity to pause and reflect. Not only on where we have come from but where we see ourselves going. Only eight years ago our future was uncertain, but through it all we have never forgotten what we were here to do and we are ever mindful of who may need our assistance in the future.

We are in a very different place in 2008. Different community needs, an ever-changing world with increased stresses being placed on families, individuals, and of course, their pets. We are here to not only care for those unfortunate pets who have, for whatever reason, found themselves without a home. We are here to help educate, guide and support everyone who has an animal, comes into contact with animals and the animals themselves.

In light of the growing demands on Animal Aid we find ourselves planning to rise above the old challenges and meet the future head on. Our resources must grow in order for us to continue to develop the work we do. Our facility is another area that must keep up with our growth and bear the stamp of our philosophy. In 2008 we are finally in the position where we can think and plan beyond sheer survival and our corporate partners play an integral role in our future.

This special 60th Birthday edition newsletter takes the opportunity to focus on our corporate partners and highlight the valuable contribution that they make, specifically to Animal Aid. We also encourage everyone to support our partners as they are committed members of our community.

Bendigo Bank Wandin Seville Branch

Our Bendigo Bank Wandin Seville community branch has now been operating for over 5 years and congratulates Animal Aid on attaining its 60th Birthday in 2008.

Bendigo Bank is often lauded for its “social responsibility” because of our work with communities – almost as if we have tacked a social conscience on to our business strategy. In fact, working for the benefit of our Customers and their communities is our business strategy. It makes sense: you cannot run a successful business in an unsuccessful community. Therefore, if we can help them prosper, then we will have strengthened our markets. And if Bendigo Bank is an essential part of the community fabric, then we are more likely to be supported and to build a sustainable business. Our charter empowers us to invest 30% of our annual profit in the local community.

We recently celebrated our 1st birthday in Lilydale and extend our sincere congratulations to Animal Aid on its 60th birthday in 2008!

Founded in 2002 in Ballarat, PETstock is the nation’s leading retail supplier of products, services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets. PETstock now operates more than 50 superstores across Australia as a large pet and livestock supply business. PETstock leads the market in providing high-quality affordable pet supplies.

At PETstock, our vision is to create a fun and exciting shopping experience, for our customers and their pets by offering a complete selection of pet-related products and services.

We understand that our customers are pet lovers, not just pet owners. They view their pets as members of their family and believe they deserve the same level of care and comfort. We invite our customers to shop at our stores with their pets.

PETstock has a strong commitment to the community and we have worked closely with Animal Aid since opening our Lilydale store. Functions are held throughout the year to raise funds for Animal Aid and we also participate in all their events.

PETstock Lilydale is a proud supporter of the Animal Rehabilitation Training (A.R.T) Program™ run by Animal Aid. A.R.T Program™ is an innovative program that is designed specifically for shelter dogs. Through positive reinforcement training and environmental enrichment, it aims to help the dogs cope while they’re in the shelter and improves their chances of finding new homes.

We welcome everyone to our store at Unit 3, 445-449 Maroondah Highway, Lilydale, or visit our website www.petstock.com.au

Animal Aid is a Bendigo Bank customer, and over the last year we have supported them by donating 13 two-way radios. These radios are state of the art and have a proven robustness needed for this type of work. The supply of these radios allow Animal Aid staff working on the Coldstream property to communicate effectively with each other, which enhances efficiency and more importantly personal safety for the animal handlers. We will also be the sole sponsor of their 60th Birthday dinner to be held on Sunday March 16th. And congratulate them again on this achievement.

We will continue to work with Animal Aid and other local community-minded business; offering them opportunities such as sponsorships and access to the Bendigo Community Bank suite of products and services. Examples included are Community enterprise and Community Telco arrangements which will assist their business.

Please visit us at the Branch in Union Road, Wandin North, or call Tony Forbes Branch Manager on 5964 4595.

Can you help? Animal Aid, in its 60th Birthday year, acknowledges with thanks, the various forms of support we receive from individuals and businesses. Their donations of food and other goods, as well as funds, allow us to focus on the animals we work with. We always have a large wish list and your assistance in donating funds towards the items listed below and/or donating one of these items would be greatly appreciated.

Veterinary Clinic Wish List

1. Doppler Blood Pressure Monitor: $1,690 High blood pressure is thought to be particularly significant in the development of many geriatric diseases in feline patients. Early detection and management using this monitor may slow the progression of these diseases.

2. An Automatic X-Ray Processor: $6,000 This processor has many benefits over manual processing: increased efficiency in terms of chemical consumption, a decrease in staff time developing x-rays, and a decrease in the number of poor films which are attributable to chemical or development procedural issues.

3. A new Radiographic Unit: $15,000 Our current unit needs replacing in the near future as it will soon expire!

4. Bank of Shor-Line Stainless patient hospital steel cages: $6,000 New cages will be easier to clean and more comfortable for the animals.

5. A New (Animal Specific) Pulse Oximeter: $2,000 Currently we have a pulse oximeter designed for use in humans. We find with sedation (which lowers peripheral blood pressure) we cannot gain accurate information on the animal’s blood oxygen saturation levels that are particularly important in animals under anaesthesia, animals with anaemia and animals with chest disease, etc.

Boarding Kennels Wish List

1. Washing Machine & Dryer: $2,399 - washing machine, $2,499 dryer + installation costs by plumber Another Kleen Maid Speed Queen Commercial Heavy Duty LWK24 washing machine for washing bedding as well as a Kleen Maid LGK 37 heavy duty commercial dryer.

Cattery Wish List

1. Garden Pro Tidy Master Shed: $500 A 3 x 3 metre Steel Chief shed with shelving for storing items currently in the cattery.

2. Larger Airconditioner - Teco LSLT 2409YS unit: $1,099 The current Teco 5.8 amp air conditioning unit does not cope as it is too small.

Welfare Wish List

1. A.R.T Program™ Trail Revamp: $3,000 This trail which is used to prepare dogs for their new homes needs mulch, new board walks, a maze, shade sails, obstacles and agility equipment.

2. Food Storage Area & Forklift: $15,000 We need an area to store food that is often received on pallets and is moved without a forklift that could result in occupational health and safety issues/Workcover claims.

3. Hills Hoist 400, 450 or 500 model $225 - $345 depending on size We need another hoist to dry bedding & other items.

Administration Wish List

1. Computers: $1,500 - desktop + software (3 needed) $2,300 - laptop + software We need a new laptop for the cattery, a new computer in the reception area and two computers to replace existing computers in the boarding and management areas.

If you are able to assist Animal Aid in our 60th Birthday year through helping us with any of these items, please contact Sally Miles or Matthew Etty-Leal on (03) 9739 0300 or email [email protected]. We look forward to talking to you in the near future.

THE MAIL NEWSPAPER GROUP THE local newspaper is the heart of any community. The Mail Newspaper Group - Mountain Views Mail, Upper Yarra Mail, (Monbulk) Trader Mail and Ferntree Gully Mail take pride in reflecting the opinions, lifestyles, aspirations, concerns and personalities of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges communities they serve, and in helping to grow the businesses of its many advertisers.

Mail newspapers are part of the Star News Group, the biggest independent family-owned newspaper company operating in Melbourne and Geelong. The papers have had a long association with The Victorian Animal Aid Trust as part of our commitment to community.

Animals play a vital role in many aspects of the lives of our readers and our stories over the years have reflected the love and devotion community members, young and old, have for their pets. Sadly, there have been stories too of cruelty and neglect revealing the vulnerability of the animals who look to us for care, companionship and for survival.

The role we play as a newspaper is very much about promoting responsible pet ownership and, through features such as “Pet Pawtrait” and “Adopt-a-Pet”, assisting to find homes for some of the many thousands of abandoned or lost dogs and cats which find their way to Coldstream.

The Mail congratulates everyone at The Victorian Animal Aid Trust on 60 years of caring for those who can’t care for themselves, and on their continuing commitment to public education on pet ownership.

Our Wish List

DONATION HOME LOANS Everyone at Donation Home Loans wish Animal Aid a very happy 60th Birthday. They have come a long way since they moved from Kilsyth to Coldstream and we are extremely proud to be able to support the valuable work they do.

At Donation Home Loans, our mission is to provide regular and enduring financial support to Australian charities. We are well aware of the challenges faced by charities in generating regular and predictable income.

Since our inception we have donated over $400,000 to over 200 charities. In doing so, we believe that we are also encouraging other businesses to engage in similar socially responsible practices. Animal Aid, alone, now receives around $7,000 per year and their accumulative donations are now over $16,000. This money is generated by sharing equally with charities the monthly, ongoing commissions that we receive from the lending institutions we work for.

Our donations to Animal Aid are now used to support their innovative Post Adoption Training (P.A.T) Program™ that provides training to allow adopted dogs to settle into their new home and be integrated successfully into their new family.

We look forward to supporting Animal Aid long into the future and we encourage other businesses to do the same. They have been responsible for offering a new life to an untold number of animals and a new lease on life for those who adopt them.
