What are valuesValues are Important and lasting beliefs or ideals shared by the members of a culture about what is good or bad what is desirable or undesirable. Values have a major influence on a person's behavior and attitude and serve as broad guidelines in all situations. Values are defined by the world around us, values have an impact on our happiness, our satisfaction with life and how we deal with everyday situations

Project Overview

The exploration of values and their connectivity or correlation to happiness is important in the context of the promotion of human well being; the project seeks to determine the level, if any, of correlation between values and happiness.

In keeping with the aims of IHS this project will attempt to explore the nature and future of humankind whilst promoting human wellbeing in a sustainable way.

The key activities of this project will be:-Develop a project hypothesisResearch the world values surveyArticulate the meaning of happinessDesign and test a survey, including the selection of survey format and toolsDistribute the survey to as wide an audience as possibleCollect the responsesAnalysis the responses and test them against the hypothesisUsing statistical tools establish any correlation between values and happinessPublish the results and ensure that the respondents that requested the results receive them5

WORLD VALUES SURVEYTraditional ValuesSecular-Rational ValuesSurvival ValuesSelf Expression Values

The World Values Survey is conducted every five years and collects data from a minimum sample size of 1,000 individuals across at least 65 societies. One of the key outputs from the survey is a cultural map that plots demographic data across two dimensions. The first dimension is traditional values versus secular-rational values and the second dimension is survival values verses self expression values.Using the WVS as a foundation, the project purpose is to randomly select a group of respondents from a variety of backgrounds. Using the two WVS dimensions plot the respondents on a WVS styled cultural chart.

Additionally the project hopes to determine, from the limited data whether there is a correlation between location on the cultural map and life satisfaction or happiness.

PROJECT HYPOTHESIS

Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized

by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

The project will confirm or otherwise the hypothesis that respondents who are less tolerant are less happy or less satisfied. The expected response is that groups that score generally lower on the traditional values axis and generally lower on the survival values axis are less happy (self evaluated).Additionally the survey will highlight other correlations between tolerance and survival values and overall feelings of happiness or wellbeing.7

Clear Choice

After consideration I chose to use Survey Monkey as the project data collection tool. After a detailed analysis of the world values survey I removed the questions that were less relevant to my hypothesis. It was important to ensure that the survey had no more than 30 questions, which would take the average respondent around 15 minutes to complete.

A five point rating scale was selected as this according to Jon Krosnick Professor Communication at Stanford is the most reliable for the surveying of opinions as it forces respondents to make a clear choice without the limits of a 3 point scale.

Utilizing social media, (Linked in and Facebook), the IHS student network, my work colleagues and personal contact I attempted to survey the broadest audience possible.
