Inspired by the notion, Six Degrees Of Separation, Six Seconds of Illumination connects 24 final year BA (Hons) Design Futures students with their alumni. The project emphasises the importance of human connections. Six Seconds of Illumination is about forming and strengthening the links between: Current Design Futures students, alumni and industry.

Project OverviewSix Seconds of Illumination is a collaborative project devised by 24 final-year students from BA (Hons) Design Futures, at the University of Salford. We want to explain what our degree has trained us to do, to exhibit how we utilise the process known as Design Thinking to generate creative responses to a range of challenges and show potential employers the value we can bring to what they do.

We were inspired by the notion of Six Degrees of Separation, which is about the idea of people being connected by common threads, and the six second bursts of creative energy that applications such as VINE have enabled for creative communication. We’ve brought those two things together to develop our idea of connection.

We illustrated OUR potential by connecting with previous graduates from our course, highlighting the diverse career paths that they have taken. Those connections will allow us to illuminate how design thinkers can make fantastic contributions to the creative industries, and how each one of us has a different skill set we bring to the market.

BA Design Futures. So what’s it all about then? Articulating the insight we seek to impart to our students and the knowledge they gain whilst on the course has been a long standing challenge, and one we have yet to really find a way of writing down. What can a Design Futures graduate do? What have they learnt?

I could discuss the benefits of our graduates as design thinkers, or multi-disciplinary designers, but what does this really mean?

These labels can be confusing in that they attempt to describe skills and attributes many in the industry may not be comfortable with, that are not ‘taught’ on traditional degree courses. Design Futures is anything but traditional in its approach.

What employers or clients get from our graduates is a creative inquisitive mind that can be applied to a broad range of roles within the creative sector. But more than that, these are dynamic individuals who will look deeply into a problem before jumping at the first ‘idea’ that springs to mind. Then create a response that considers users and the entire context of the product, service or experience. This process of investigation, interpretation, ideas creation, experimentation and reflection, or as we like to call it, Design Thinking, is placed firmly in the centre of what they do.

This event is all about expressing the value of Design Futures graduates and what they bring to the creative industries. What better way to do this, than through the success of our alumni? Bringing this to industry and realising their plan has been a huge undertaking. The students have been ambitious in their intent and they have pushed themselves throughout the project. The resulting event, social media interaction, website and industry contacts are a testament to what is achievable when you aim high and succeed.

ADRIAN BENTLEYAssociate Lecturer and Creative Director at Just Good Ideas

For the past 4 years I’ve been privileged to work with the BA Design Futures final year undergraduates on their final team project. And what a privilege.

First, I get to brag to my parents that I’m an Associate Lecturer in Design Thinking at the University of Salford. Can’t tell you how proud they are. As far as they’re concerned their little cherub (I’m 43 by the way) is practically a Professor. Well, that’s what they tell the neighbours! But the most important bragging right for me is that I get to meet, think alongside and be inspired by some of the UK’s best emerging creative talent.

My brief is to head-up a final semester module where the group is challenged to articulate the meaning and relevance of their degree ‘BA Design Futures’ – whilst shedding light on their personal, potential future value to employers. And when they’ve arrived at a first class solution, they have to make it happen.

6 Seconds of Illumination is a bold statement; the result of an intense period of design thinking interrogation – a process they’ve approached with both intellectual and creative rigour.

I can’t pretend there haven’t been moments of anxiety. There have. But the team have held their nerve, remained confident and assured, and pulled it off with aplomb! OK, I’ll let them tell you all about it – but I have no doubt these talented design thinking problem solvers are the future. Keep your eye on them!

SOCIAL MEDIAOur Twitter feed has had a great response over the course of the project. Following the initial hurdle of creating a ‘voice’ for the brand and beginning to engage with others, the feed has gone from strength to strength. With a follow back ratio of over 2/3 and over 700 hundred tweets posted and a potential social reach of around 500,000 tweeters. It has proven to be a great way to talk to our potential sponsors and to talk up our sponsors once they were onboard.

“Great to be involved with the exciting @6_Seconds collaboration. That fab conveyor belt of creative talent at Salford Uni is at it again!” Studio North.

“@6_Seconds Glad to meet the team and glad to be on board! Good luck from all at @CuckooDesign!” Cuckoo.

With its short length video recording format of 6 seconds, Vine was an ideal way of utilising a new social platform to benefit our project. The six second challenges allowed us to produce content for our documentary and also to boost our social media presence. Each of the companies who were kind enough to sponsor the project were also asked to produce a 6 second video in which they described their company and 6 words to describe their companies, which appear within this magazine. Our brand associated challenge with Innocent Smoothies received the most attention with Innocent themselves replying to out tweets which had the videos attached and followed our twitter feed.

How many Maltesers can you fit into your mouth in 6 seconds? How many press ups can you do in 6 seconds?

How many fruit pastilles can you transfer with chopstick? How fast can you drink an Innocent fruit smoothie?

When looking for our venue we wanted somewhere that was a bit unpolished, white walls, and the opportunity to shape much of the space ourselves - like a blank canvas. After much searching we found Salford Creative Hub, and it was perfect for our needs. It had enough space to house 24 versatile pieces from the students, we could dress the venue as we pleased, and most of all it was local to Salford!

THE EVENTWith a huge amount of team effort and preparation, the event finally arrived. This is what the project had been building up to and it certainly did not disappoint. Each student grabbed this opportunity to show off their Design Thinking skills to creative professionals through the development of individual light pieces. These creative responses captured an inspiring quote taken from the connections made with past graduates. The diversity of the work presented reflects the broad talents of Design Futures students and also made for a unique and enjoyable event.

“Had such a wonderful evening speaking to the multi-skilled Design Futures students @6_Seconds truly warms the heart to see such raw talent.” Michael Di Paola, Studio North.

You know that panicky feeling you get, when the list in the ‘to do’ box far outweighs the list of jobs done, when the clock is constantly against you and everything seems to be running in fast forward, then even quicker the day is upon you. The time to panic is over, and the time to impress and prove yourself begins.

This was the 2nd May 2013. Six Seconds of Illumination.

Our journey had begun in earnest, three months before the 2nd of May, 2013. Having been given our Brief, we were left to begin our adventure. We were aware that we would have to demonstrate our potential worth to the creative industries and beyond, having seen the two previous third year groups before us experience, and rise to, the same challenge. What we weren’t aware of however, was the sheer scale of involvement

10

Page 15: 6 Seconds Of Illumination

required to pull it off. Through a combined group effort and a hell of a lot of invested time, our small idea revolving around the idea of ‘Six Degrees of Separation’, had grown and developed into an all singing, all dancing networking and exhibition event.

The power of connections was something which the entire group had agreed was to be the most important component of the project. Having been tasked with providing a bridge between learnt academic skills and real-world employment opportunities this would mean connecting with companies who would buy into the project and be prepared to lend us credibility by associating their brand with ours. Connecting with potential employers was stage one of our connections remit. In order to highlight our potential worth we felt that it would be a great idea to involve the graduates of our course who we had seen complete this

very process before. This helped us build a great picture of what Design Futures graduates have the potential to become. From Graphic Designers to Social Media Managers, Creative Researchers to Art Directors, our list of graduates in work was certainly a mixed bag, but it was this diversity which helped us gain the interest of the companies who decided to invest. Former students were all asked to complete a questionnaire, articulating their experiences since graduation as creative practitioners, which would give each of us a basis for our exhibition piece. Essentially, using our own unique design styles, we would be communicating their journey from being Design Futures students through to becoming working creative professionals.

The space chosen for the event was the Salford Creative Hub, an industrial space from Salford’s own past now reinvented as a space to be transformed by imagination. In order for the event to look as good as we could make it, some serious work was required. The team converged on the Hub the day before the event to make sure the place was shipshape and ready for visitors. Cue constant sweeping of dust, cleaning of surfaces and squirting of air freshener. Using black fabric bought specifically for purpose, each window was covered to restrict the amount of light getting in. Exhibition pieces were screwed into the walls, set upon tables and fixed in place by the team who finally left the space having spent the entire day transforming it.

“Well done @6_Seconds - a very interesting mix of ideas on display at Design Futures event. Versatile, creative and professional.” Mark Hope, Access Digital.

“Fantastic effort by everyone involved @6_Seconds - great work and choice of venue. Well done!” Benjamin Greenhalgh, Cuckoo.

11

Page 16: 6 Seconds Of Illumination

The event began slowly, as with most events of a similar nature there is always the unknown factor of whether anybody will turn up or not. Having sent out invitations weeks in advance, firmed up responses from many, and bought enough alcohol to keep us all going till doomsday, we were left to wait as the clock ticked down to 7pm. Those of us worried about the turnout needn’t have, as start time came and went a steady stream of people began to walk through the doors.

That’s when it all begins, the nervous anticipation sidelined, the rush of new faces all wanting ‘illumination’, your chance to show them what it’s all about, the beginning of the Show.

Much like any exhibition the array of different things to look at was an instant hit with visitors. Armed with a glass of beer or wine, guests were encouraged to peruse at their leisure.

In the same way as a high school disco begins with two sets of people on opposite ends of the room so did the event. Slowly but surely however, conversations began. There is always a level of anxiety when displaying a piece of work which you have worked hard on to convey a specific message. Will it relate to others? Will they get it? For anyone who didn’t quite understand the concepts behind a piece, we were on hand to give an explanation.

Perhaps one of the most striking parts of the exhibition was the fantastic, instant immersive space - a pop up projection unit equipped with two screens, LED lighting and a surround sound system. This specialist installation was loaned to us by Gav Cross and his team at 4D Creative and, thanks to their generosity, we were able to showcase the videos we filmed for the documentary and the six-second challenges that made up part of our social media strategy. This was one of the most successful elements of the event with many of the guest commenting on just how different and impressive it was.

“I knew the @6_Seconds event was going to be good, but I didn’t think it’d be THAT good! #future #talent #Manchester 24 Genius Team” Chris Marsh, Melbourne Hosting.

12

Page 17: 6 Seconds Of Illumination

Formally opening the evening our Tutor, Adrian Bentley, took to the floor in front of the guests and talked honestly about how the project had unfolded over the past 12 weeks, openly admitting that there were some sleepless nights and more than a fair share of jitters throughout the process. In describing the projects ambition to connect with potential employers he commented; “I called in favours with various contacts to arrange introductions for the students, but that was where the favour stopped. The people approached then made a business decision to either get involved or not. Not surprisingly, most did.” We had certainly proven that we were capable of generating interest. Our list of sponsors featured established and emerging brands from creative players in the North-west, including financial backing from Madhouse, Studio North, Cuckoo, Origin, Stimulate, and E3 Creative. Two other companies had provided support in kind with 4D Creative providing the Projection Unit and Smoking Gun PR backing the 6 Seconds PR team with some invaluable advice about creating a buzz for the event, and showing us leads to the market. Adrian’s assistance in generating leads of inquiry for the pitch team, his suggestions and feedback on the developing concept have all led to this project fulfilling its ambition. For that we are all incredibly grateful, thanks Adrian.

As the evening became more relaxed, and we could reflect on how this project had evolved, we talked about the part that wasn’t planned, but which developed from undertaking this work (and what most certainly sets Design Futures apart from other courses), which was the team ethic and camaraderie shown by the students. A successful outcome from a production team of 24 people, working together for what was essentially the first time on a high-risk project, in real-time, with £4,000 budget, is something very special. At the heart of any good team is its management structure. Alongside our thanks to Adrian, we must also extend our gratitude to our Programme staff, Roy Chilvers, Fiona Velez-Colby and Fran Nelson who fielded questions, frustrations and complications throughout the process, without their help we’d have gotten nowhere.

“Congrats @6_Seconds u really lit up the room last night! Good Luck to all! #designfutures” Alisha Forrester, Alumni.

13

Page 18: 6 Seconds Of Illumination

As the guests swallowed the last of the beer and conversations came to their final few phrases the event was nearing its close. All the panic gone, the ‘to do’ box completed and a clock very much running on time again with no fast forward button in sight, Six Seconds of Illumination ended. A great sense of achievement was felt by all as we said goodbye to the Salford Creative Hub knowing that all of our work had been for something. We’d achieved something which hadn’t been done before and its success in attracting so many influential guests is something we can all be very proud of.

This was 2nd May, 2013. Six Seconds of Illumination.

SHAUNA CARYSFORTHStudio Manager - Pitching TeamAbout my installation: I want to link the statement back to my own self directed project on the capacity of the human brain and our creative thinking: portraying this conflict between the left logical and safe side of our brain and the right being the free and creative side.

So I’m Shauna, and I’m designated Studio Manager for Six Seconds of Illumination, this leadership role was something new for me, but I really got into it and realised skills I never knew I had. I loved being able to contribute to each group and provide my opinions and constructive criticism to help further this imaginative project into something brilliant. Working in a team is where I thrive, making sure everyone is heard, and that everyone’s individual skills are used to the teams best advantage, and along the way I’ve gained the respect and authority of all my peers. My desire to experience new things has taken me on the best year of my life studying Design in Aveiro, Portugal through the support of Design Futures. Stepping off a plane in a country without knowing a soul took bravery I never thought I had, and the best way to describe it would be a valuable and unforgettable life experience. It made me realise the only reason we have a comfort zone is to know where we truly begin to push ourselves, and grow as individuals. I always have been and always will be a creative thinker, and the projects I’ve undertaken on my time on Design Futures reflect my love of all design, and ability to apply Design Thinking to subjects that interest me. Studying topics from the manipulation of images “Before Photoshop,” to whether we can train our brains to be better designers, if it intrigues me, there is no stopping me.

AQEEL ARIF

During my time at University I have developed strong creative and technical skills working as a designer as well as my design thinking skills. I am confident working across all aspects of the design process, from initial research to realisation.

My strengths lie in digital development and design management roles; taking responsibility for projects, ensuring their success, managing and co-ordinating tasks. I was recently involved in an aspiring project named ‘Six Seconds of Illumination,’ the purpose of which to explain what it is our degree has trained us to do, how we utilise the process known as Design Thinking to generate creative responses to a range of challenges, and how we can show potential employers the value we can bring to what they do. I was part of the Event Co-ordination team as Event Manager working with Salford Creative Hub to hold a creative event illuminating how design thinkers can make fantastic contributions to the creative industries, within a specific budget and timescale. I established a comprehensive knowledge of event planning.

In my degree I demonstrated a focus and maturity in driving myself to overcome obstacles. This is shown by me having completed a second year in Barcelona living on my own and in a new country, learning and understanding basic Spanish. I have demonstrated flexibility by learning different types of design as in Spain simplicity is key to the style there. This has also helped me gain more team working experience with a very diverse group of people. I have demonstrated my independence as a self-starter in finding my way around Barcelona, and learning to adjust to new surroundings quickly. My time in Barcelona proved that I have the confidence to travel and work abroad or away from home and I am confident I can overcome any challenge.

Event Co-ordination - Team LeaderAbout my installation: I have shown a link between my own current self directed project and the installation piece. I have found out that consumers prefer to have a real life experience and see something visual so I created a graphic magazine piece that comes to life. I believe that it shows both my skills as a graphic designer and my use of the Design Thinking process.

ROBIN GOODSWEN

At 30 years of age, I’m the oldest member of the class. This doesn’t phase me. I had worked for many years in education, mostly working with children who struggle with learning challenges before joining the course. Having spent many years away from my own education, the chance to join Design Futures in year two was too good to pass up. I’m so glad I did.

Being part of Design Futures has given me the opportunity to learn how to use software such as InDesign and Adobe Director, further develop my skills using Photoshop and most importantly given me a chance to improve my Food Styling and Food Photography.

In 2011, alongside my brother, I co-founded GoCookYourself.com, an online recipe blog. In its first two years GoCookYourself has amassed a following of 140,000 on the blog housing platform Tumblr, where it has been named one of the 50 best cooking blogs. The website features over 200 original recipes which have been written, cooked and photographed by myself.

You can generally find me in the kitchen, working on a new recipe, managing my growing socio-economic community online or watching Huddersfield Town.

If you ask really nicely I might even cook you something.

[email protected] @robcookyourself www.GoCookYourself.come w

Head of Social Media - Pitching TeamAbout my installation: I have filmed and edited a short recipe video. Much like Design Thinking, cooking relies on a followed process: the recipe. The video is shot in reverse, showing the journey that a pizza makes to become a glass of water. This reverse engineering of the food is a metaphor for the idea that if we all know a process, our way through a problem becomes easier.

Cuckoo“What do you call a bunch of people prepared to go over the edge in pursuit of more imaginative and effective brand solutions? People who lived through – and led – the digital revolution. Who are experienced in the serious business disciplines of service and results. Yet, have never lost their innocence or ideals. Who still have a capacity to be intrigued. A desire to make friends. An eagerness to face challenges. And, above all, are motivated by the sheer exhilaration of having ideas and making them work. What do you call these people? In a word, Cuckoo.”

JAMES WALLEY

Hi I’m James, I started out designing at 15 and have loved it ever since, I’m now 21 and just finishing my third year at university studying Design Futures. One of my more prominent interests in design lies within fashion and the design and production of clothing. Recently I have started a clothing brand called RoughCuts Collective that offers handmade garments and one off designs in the hope of making products that can be original and characteristic. This closely ties in to a self-directed project I am currently completing for University looking at the issue of un-originality in fashion and how this can be improved, this is something I hope to later incorporate into the brand.

Going through both College and University I have learnt many skills that I consider vital to being a good designer, including teamwork, ambition and most notably the design thinking ethos I have been taught to apply to my projects while studying the Design Futures course at Salford University.

I also focus in graphic design, illustration and Interaction design and take much pride in my work. I like clean bold designs while on the screen but love to work with my hands whenever possible.

Project DocumentingFrom my alumni answers, the concept of making contacts was suggested and this was then related to the idea of ‘connections’. I feel ‘connections’ define the design thinking process, and everything else that we do as people. The element of the lights being literally connected to a battery creates the installation light. The last element to the work is in its ambition to forge a connection with the audience.

After three years studying design, I feel ready to make my first steps into the creative industry. I started with a graphic design background, having studied the subject at Blackburn College for two years, but it soon became apparent at University that my strongest skills lay in other areas.

During my time here I have developed a keen interest in social media and digital marketing, which has been further intensified through running my own fashion and beauty blog, Sequin This. Although it started off as more of a hobby, it has been a great learning experience that will surely help in my future career. I’m particularly interested in engaging people through social networking websites and enjoy learning about new and exciting techniques on how to drive traffic to websites.

I’ve had experience writing content for brands such as Zalando, IL2L and have even blogged for Manchester Fashion Week. I hope to continue using my skills to promote brands in a more permanent position upon graduating.

JAYNE SANDERS

I worked as Co-Studio Manager alongside all teams helping with the overall running of the project. Even though this was a challenging role, I enjoyed my time on the project and I am proud of what we have achieved.

After studying Art & Design at college, I trained as a CAD Programmer in the field of packaging. Having spent over six years in this industry I have gained many valuable skills both professional and creative, which inspired me to further my knowledge of the world of design. Creativity has always been at the forefront of my interests, and was the motivation behind me choosing to study the BA (Hons) Design Futures course. This niche course has enabled me to thoroughly understand the theory behind design, and the process used to develop strong and innovative solutions.

I have become familiar with the management of design, and able to utilise the method of Design Thinking effectively. Many of my projects on this course have revolved around branding and advertising, using a mixture of creativity and Design Thinking as tools to enhance the appeal of a product or brand image. It is this area of design which I hope to pursue.

During my time at University, I also discovered the art of photography, which I chose to study as an extra curriculum alongside design. I believe photography is a meaningful way of expressing my style and personality, whilst having the diversity to be interpreted in many different ways. I am determined to continue linking these two subjects together and progress into a career, which will allow my creativity to shine through.

Finance Team - Co-Studio ManagerAbout my installation: The concept came from the quote “purpose over being blinded by aesthetics” and considering the outcome when a design cannot rely on visual communication. The visual aesthetics of a design should not detract from its purpose or simply be used to cover up a poor solution. Using LED lights I wrote the quote in Braille as a unique way of illuminating this statement.

Illuminated Quote: “Thinking out of the box, questioning the concept, purpose over being blinded by aesthetics.” Jake Welsh, Managing Director at E3 Creative.

Design Futures has given me the opportunity to further expand my current knowledge of design. I have gained a specific skill set in visual communications with my body of work; not just in the finished article, but also with pinpointing obstacles and labouring outcomes through various processes. I have gained the aptitude of a ‘design thinker’ alongside a designer.

Since the ripe age of 11 I have been interested in art and design, and the work that I have, and continue to produce, is mostly inspired by my main interests; music and basketball. I see that music and basketball go hand in hand and create a great source of enthusiasm for me in this arena. Music helps to keep me focused coupled with basketball that keeps me motivated, resulting in a positive mental attitude.

Another interest of mine is Fine Art. Having studied fine art in college allowed me to step away from the ever growing digital era and express through pencil and paper. Feelings and thoughts cannot always be portrayed through the digital form, and there is a need to accede to raw materials.

I am an ambitious and self motivated individual with a strong eye for detail. It is my persistence and initiative that makes me who I am today and gives me the ability to be versatile and proficient with tasks such as fine art, painting, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro.

I am more than able to create and am aware that every motion and experience will result in a lesson learnt; and for this I am passionate.

Digital DevelopmentAbout my installation: I’ve interpreted the concept of emotion by looking into colour and the way it can effect human emotions. I focused on the people of Manchester and, specifically, the impact of football in the city with, rival clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City. Taking the colours of red or blue, I have captured a sense of heightened emotion.

My interests lie in Production Design in particular Set Design and the research side of an Art Department in TV and Film and it is in this area that I have been developing my projects. I have also had some experience of Set Design and Film Production from placement opportunities that I have secured in the past.

I am extremely competent in using both Windows and Macintosh Operating systems and enjoy creating digital designs and videos using key design and media software including Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Director and Final Cut Pro amongst others. Other skills include; project management, communication and team working, I have had the opportunity to further develop these skills through being the School of Art and Design’s Student Representative and through team projects on my course. Research and investigation are other key attributes I have developed with innovation always being a key aim in my work.

Digital Development - Team LeaderTo be a graduate of Design Futures, it’s not always clear what path to go down in terms of a career. That could be perceived as a bad thing, but that is definitely not the case. It demonstrates that Design Futures is a course that unlocks the potential for a variety of creative jobs in the industry. Unlike other courses, it does not train you to do a specific role and just be ‘another graduate’.

The Design Futures degree was not my original choice of course to study following on from studying A levels in Fine art, Film studies and Dance; however I am very glad that I was directed to the course as it has widened my artistic and design knowledge and views.

Design Futures has given me a much broader design vocabulary and way of working, focusing upon the development of innovative thinking through a strong focus upon research and investigation. Design thinking is something that I have learnt throughout my time of study preparing me for the future world of the creative industries. I feel the course has built up my confidence levels in pursuing new challenges and expressing myself more; I have been given the chance to work with a multitude of talent of which I have taken inspiration and new skills from to showcase in my own work.

I see myself as a creative person who doesn’t want to be tied down to one discipline; I aim to be constantly learning; as there is always more to gain. I always see things through to the end; regardless of the process. I hold strong team working and individual skills that I am able to communicate efficiently; and was given a role as part of the Contact research group on the 6 Seconds of Illumination project.

I am committed to my work and I am also a part of the Firestorm Cheerleaders team Thunder; a group based in Swinton who compete in competitions and for a second year running are to compete in Italy representing the UK at Europeans; another aspect of my life that requires creativity, team work, hard work, communication and commitment.

AYANDA NDHLOVU

In 2009 I was a future Fashion Designer. My journey as a designer has always been leading to a career in fashion. After spending a few months on a Fashion Design course, I came to realise that I had lost interest in fashion designing. I needed to find a degree that would strengthen my concept building skills and allow me to utilise all my skills from a range of disciplines and exercise.

As a BA (Hons) Design Futures student, I have been able to explore all the disciplines I am interested in throughout the course. This has enabled me to develop my key themes of interest that are present throughout all the disciplines I practice. Heritage, Culture and Identity have become my main focus areas on which I have been able to build strong design concepts and offer possible means to solve issues facing those areas.

This degree has fuelled my design activity for the past 3 years, pushing me out of my comfort zone and daring me to question every design decision that has been made. Now as a creative, I do not just design. I create for a reason. Every creative outcome I make is a result of a series of design decisions I have made from utilising Design Thinking.

In 2013 I am a Creative. My journey in design is not static. It has become a cluster of paths and possible destinations. What is definite is the desire I have to use my creativity to solve issues that I feel are important and my passion to express myself. In 2013 I am a Creative first, a Designer second and a Photographer third.

Project DocumentingMy illumination piece is based on my interest in theatre and performance and is represented through the use of theatrical lighting. Creativity and designing beautiful things has always been a passion of mine from a very young age. I enjoy every aspect of creating a piece of work, seeing the blank canvas and imagining the possible outcomes, the attention to detail during the creativity stage, but the best part of all is seeing the end result, and letting others share in your imagination.

Coming into this course with a textiles background, Design Futures has allowed me to build up other design skills. One day I could be sitting next to a Graphic Designer and then next to a Painter; this is a great way to discover new talents. Studying Design Futures has made me realise that social media marketing is the subject area in which I want to continue. Being a blogger I can see firsthand how important social media is today. The impact of an audience is a confidence builder and with this confidence better work can be produced not only personally but professionally.

From enjoying Maths to loving Art, I’ve always felt I have the ability to use both the analytical and creative working process. This led me to search for a course that allowed me to build up on these skill sets. I chose to do an Art and Design foundation course to broaden my knowledge in diverse areas such as 3D, Fine Art, Graphic Design and Fashion. Studying Design Futures has given me the opportunity to develop my deep skills in marketing and also allowed me to improve my broad skills through working with others.

Portrait painting and pastel drawing are something I’ve done from a young age. I remember using my first set of crayons to redraw the pictures in my books instead of colouring them in. I enjoy the time spent in front of a canvas, covered in paint, expressing thoughts through each stroke of the paint brush.

I’m fascinated by emotional marketing and user experience, as I believe that any messages communicated through a product or marketing need to resonate and connect. By learning how to visually articulate my working process, Design Futures has assisted me in becoming the T-shaped Design Thinker that I am today.

CECILIA LEE

Hello, my name is Cecilia, I was part of the Project Documenting team for Six Seconds of Illumination. My role consisted mostly of recording the key stages of the Design Thinking process during our project, and to display it clearly in order to tell our story. Design Futures is a course that concentrates primarily on Design Thinking, and how it helps us look at a subject in a new light, to define any problems and to generate a solution in order to bring the issue forward. A project I am currently working on is about Food Waste, in particular our relationship as a consumer to food, and our culture of excess. My decision to do Food Waste as my end of year project is because of my fascination with people’s relationship with the environment, and our part as a society. One of my aims in life is to go travelling around the world, as I believe it gives me more perspective in life and to see first hand other cultures. Meeting people from other parts of the word taught me just how people see the world in different ways and this inspires my designs.

Project DocumentingIt reflects on how some of us are afraid of taking challenges when we don’t know the results. I am a 22 year old student, very passionate, bubbly, friendly, I love to shop and go out with my friends and have fun, where ever I go I will always be remembered. I am currently in the final year of my art degree. Once I have completed my degree in (BA Hons) Design Futures I plan to carry on in to future education doing a PGCE course in teacher training.

The reason I want to pursuit a career in teaching is from the age of twelve I got the idea in my head that teaching was the right path for me but as I was so young I didn’t quite know what I wanted to teach but I knew I wanted to become a teacher. Now that I am much older and wiser I know I want to pursue a career in art, as this is my passion. During my years at University I have overcome a lot of things in my life I am more confident in what I do I have learned a lot of different skills. I have gained valuable insight which will help me strive to be a better designer and be very successful in my life.

Event Co-ordinationI have reinterpreted the quote as “don’t be afraid to satisfy your own curiosity”. The hidden text piece requires an audience to confront potential fears if they are to engage with the message. Graphic design and all around creative is the vision I have for my future career within the design world. After recently graduating from the University of Salford’s HND Graphic Design course, I decided I wanted to further my knowledge on how the creative industry works. Not only does Design Futures give students training in Design Management but it provides them with invaluable work experience, opening many doors within the world of design and business ethnic.

I have always been a creative individual since I can recall, inspired by most things involved in the creative industry; I like to explore and try different aspects of design. My style of working often changes depending on current design trends, recently I have introduced hand-drawn typography into my pieces. This style I have created is largely influenced by Mike Perry and the book ‘The Hand Job’. My work tends to sit easy on the eye but upon further inspection its busy and complex, the balance is something I am constantly working on.

My work has been lucky enough to have been featured in several exhibitions including the Idea Generation Gallery (London), The Lowery (Greater Manchester) and Salford Museum & Art Gallery (Greater Manchester).

Project Documenting - Team LeaderI decided to illuminate the quote “we are in control of our own reality” while incorporating my illustrated hand-drawn typography. The quirkiness of the type reflects how the journey after university may not always be straightforward. The pattern on each title and letter represents connections within the industry. The butterflies themselves are obviously part a real-life design process – something that develops from caterpillars.

Digital Development - PRI was looking for a metaphor that would show how you can generate a multitude of outcomes. I based my idea on a Chinese Tangram puzzle – with ‘Tangram’ translating as “seven boards of skill” – and focussed on the relationship between that and the Design Futures student. A digital culture specialist with a passion for all forms of engagement, immersion & visual storytelling. With a background in graphic & web design I look to bring these elements into my career with a unique approach to the role of UX and interaction designer.

As web developer and branding and concept manager I helped design and direct the creation of the Six Seconds of Illumination brand, bringing its essence and visual identity to life. I believe this identity (with a little help from parallax scrolling) to be a great example of storytelling in a visual form taking you through the Design Futures and Six Seconds journey.

Functional and clean design is only part of the picture. I strive to bring additional layers of engagement and excitement to my work believing that when the engaging meets the functional a truly meaningful long lasting experience is created.

Brand Development - Team LeaderThe connecting theme that runs between Design Futures, the Six Seconds project and my own aspirations as a UX designer is this idea of design as a process. When a process is applied to a meaning or message you are trying to communicate it becomes a story. The Six Seconds website is a great example of this in action so I decided to bring it into my personal piece.

LUCY BRENNAN

A vintage lover with a high interest in print base media. Throughout my 3 years with Design Futures I have found myself within the creative industry and where I would like to pursue my career. After learning many skills such as design management, I would like to, in the future, open a small, intimate shop where I will stock vintage items, collectables and hard to find items. With this I would like to start an online store. I have started to bring this together through my final University project. Through learning software such as Director in my second year of University, I feel Design Futures has given me the tools and know how to embark on this process, and hopefully achieve a successful out come.

Our Six Seconds project has been a new experience as my team have been co-ordinating the main event. Planning an event has taught me that while at first things may seem difficult, if you put in the work the rewards are great. This is something I will carry with me through life, and the group project has inspired me to put my all into everything I do. While hand drawn design and screen printing are my main points of interest in terms of print based media, I have also picked up the necessary skills to use Adobe software at University, which I feel has greatly benefitted me and opened up a new world of challenges and possibilities.

Event Co-ordinationI have incorporated Kofi’s answers within a work that is based around a vintage dress. BRIGITTE BÖTTCHER

I am an enthusiastic and out-going individual with strong communication and organisational skills, who is fascinated by people, great ideas and a diverse range of different creative disciplines. Over the past three years I have been part of various projects ranging from a costume competition in Japan in 2010, film-making in 2011 and being commissioned as a Motion Graphic Designer in 2012. This reflects that I’m a quick learner with a diverse set of skills.

Design Futures gave me the opportunity to explore and develop my skills as an effective design thinker. I’m excited about utilising these skills working with professionals within the creative industry after finishing my BA degree at Salford University. The name for my own design brand, ‘abottleofmilkdesign’, derives from my first encounter with ‘British-ness’ upon my move from Germany, which was the doorstep milk bottle. I chose to use it in my design because it signifies a landmark stage in my life and design career. My move to England helped me develop my own personal traits such as adaptability, maturity, confidence, perseverance, initiative, empathy and focus, which are reflected in my brand ethos. Furthermore, I feel that the brand reflects the personal approach that I take with all projects, as I’m passionate about working with people and am a reliable, dedicated team player.

LUCY BARBER

Hi my name is Lucy, let me tell you a little bit about myself…I am currently studying Fashion Communication for my final major project, including how fashion has evolved over decades and how the world perceives fashion today. Everything I’ve uncovered so far has helped to add to my knowledge of the fashion industry, and has only made my passion of the subject to grow more. Fashion has been an on going theme throughout all my Design Futures projects, mainly because I am a trend enthusiast and intrigued by fashion creativity and design. It’s a huge part of my everyday life from offering advice to friends and family on fashion choices, keeping up to date on what’s on trend and in store, to indulging in the latest editorial magazine artwork.

My friends and colleagues will tell you there is never a dull moment when I am around, and my friendly nature makes working alongside me easy and fun. I am a great team player, and a friend once told me “You have the ability to bring life and enthusiasm to any design project” which isn’t a bad compliment!

Being one of the three team members of the Finance and Engagement group has enabled me to do what I do best, engage with people! I would describe myself as being organised and confident with great people skills which I know will serve me well in my future career.

Finance Team - Pitching TeamI wanted to show the credentials specifically needed for an account executive. The job description states: “you have to be a strong communicator and have your own ideas with confidence to share them. You have to solve problems for the clients”. This reflects the Design Thinking process, and so for my interactive piece I’ve constructed a problem for the viewer to solve in order to demonstrate the worth of being a Design Thinker.

Illuminated Quote: “Design Thinking, to me, means going a step further; exploring all options till you are happy with a result. If something feels right, then try it. Confidence and trusting yourself is important.”

SANDRAÅSTRÖM

My name is Sandra and I am a design student, currently studying the last semester of BA (Hons) Design Futures at the University of Salford, Manchester.

Originally from Stockholm, Sweden, studying abroad has been an amazing experience. With a background and basic knowledge in web design and administration, combined with a growing interest in photography and digital design, I joined the course in 2009 after a 12 month gap year travelling and working in Australia and New Zealand. To me, curiosity comes before creativity. I love to learn how and why things work (or not work) and the story behind them. This in turn feeds my creativity where all things digital sits high on my preference list. Although, a high quality print piece never fails to amaze me. Simplicity, environments and unpolished textures inspire me the most.In essence, BA Design Futures has enabled me to understand as well as develop my skills within design as a subject in general, and design thinking as a process in particular. Throughout the course, we have been taught and reminded of the importance of the design process, where thorough research of a defined problem always creates the foundation of great ideas.

In the near future, I hope to be able to combine my interest in photography with my gained skills from Design Futures and go in to an interesting role to begin my career within the creative industry. To find out more about me and the Design Futures course, please visit sandraastrom.com.

Finance Team - PRFor my piece, I decided to focus on how adequate knowledge is needed in order to make design decisions. I decided to investigate these questions before taking my project any further. Responding to my alumni’s role in teaching, I decided to display my findings on blackboards. The black light is used to ‘shed light’ on the subject and, hopefully, provide the viewer with a few interesting facts that they may not know.

POOJA CHOHAN

Being able to think creatively and design is being able to fuel the power to imagine! I have always known that I’ve wanted my career to be led within the creative field as it’s been an interest to me from a young age, as innovation is around us everywhere. Throughout 3 years of being on the course, it has taught me about design analysis, thorough researching, synthesis, brand strategies, visualising and making design decisions which is known as the Design Thinking process. It has enabled me to produce meaningful designs that have a gap in the market and designing for a purpose.

I was selected as Contact Research Team Leader for our final major group project, where team building and managing and communication have been the main areas throughout this role. I am able to work efficiently within large numbers and environments as well as independently. Being on a course like Design Futures really open up great opportunities on top of pushing my skills and potential past the boundaries. I have always enjoyed being at the leading edge of new ideas in design and usability, I couldn’t think of a better career choice for me.

Contact Research - Team LeaderI have demonstrated the importance of networking/connecting in the field of design via an equation. It illustrates the value, time, potential, skills and attributes of a Design Futures graduate that are often hidden. The equation then establishes the connection between a graduate and industry.

Illuminated Quote: “Networking was vital to me in this period as well as ensuring I wasn’t scared of asking people questions and trying to meet them for advice, no matter what their industry status.”

Hannah Swarbrick, Business Development Executive at Studio North.

ANNETTE KLERCK DAHL

I am a 20-something Norwegian/American currently living in the deeper reaches of Salford. Before I came to Design Futures I did a ‘few’ courses in Fine Art, Music, Fashion Design and Fashion Consulting in Norway before coming to England to go to University. I initially started a Fashion Communication BA at Liverpool JMU, but found it was not for me and transferred to the University of Salford and Design Futures.

I have planned and directed photo shoots, designed a clothing line, created an interactive page to tell of the wonders that is My Little Pony, imagined characters for videogames and an animated socially conscious show for kids. I’ve explored vinyl toy casting, promarkers, fineliners, paint, digital art and design work. I’ve also written about bio-mimetic marketing, design management across cultures and how and applied design can be used to raise the value of a product.

As a mature student I have plenty of experience from previous courses, jobs and travel. I love learning about other cultures and try to learn as many languages as I can (I know 3 so far, working on my 4th) I’ve been drawing since I can remember and I love working with pen and paper, but I am also honing my skills as a digital artist.

In the future I would love to work within concept art or creative design development.

Event Co-ordinationI decided to do an animation that also has a bit of a game mechanic to it where you pull the cord and the zoetrope starts to spin. As you look inside you see alumni Sara Lowery. She can’t tell you what she does, but there are six clues in her office that tell you something about what she does. These clues are skills she acquired studying as a Design Futures student.

Illuminated Quote: The fact that she can’t talk about her job. Sara Lowery, Project Manager for a company that can’t be revealed due to reasons of national security. 45
