6 Marks of Discipleship: Daily Prayer, Weekly Worship, Bible Reading,

Serving in and Beyond the Congregation, Nurturing Relationships,

and Giving a Tithe and Beyond.

This month, amidst the…vacations, Bible studies, holiday celebrations, prayer, heat, cookouts, worship and mission trips…we continue our focus on Michael Foss’ book “Real Faith for Real Life: Living the Six Marks of Discipleship”. I pray that you are finding these articles helpful as you engage the book for your daily life. This month our focus is on the fifth mark of discipleship: “Nurturing Relationships”. In this book, Michael Foss breaks down his understanding in the following four ways:

I Family

“The family is a gift from God and is intended to be that place where children receive the kind of love and care that God

wishes for all” (p. 93)

Our family is truly a relationship that God has given us to help us through life. Some families are able to work together and value the effort of working through tough times and celebrating the times of joy. There are other families that may feel “broken, odd or possibly estranged from each other”…God is still very present as a listener, comforter and healer.

II Meeting Christ in Our Friendships “If you love Jesus Christ and you love your best friend, you’ll want the two of them to meet”. (p.98)

What a great and yet very simple statement….of course we would want our best friends to meet and enjoy each other. Nurturing our relationship with Jesus Christ is very similar to talking with, supporting, playing and loving our friends.

III The Gift of Fellowship with Others in Small Groups

“Throughout the centuries, Christians have gathered in large assemblies for worship and in

small groups for spiritual growth and mutual support.” (p.102)

There are several small groups happening at St. John’s: there are five Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA) groups that meet monthly; the Lutheran Men in Mission and the Locker room men meet each month too; LCY, Young Families, Campus Ministry; bell choir; all the various committees of this congregation…so as you can see there are several opportunities to be part of a small group, which means there are several opportunities for spiritual growth and mutual support.

IV Sharing Jesus with Acquaintances “…the Christian joy we experience is more than salvation in the future. It is knowing Jesus

and experiencing the fellowship of his people in the present.” (p.106) We have some great ways to do this at St. John’s…this month we will be offering a whole week of Vacation Bible School. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to volunteer ourselves to help kids get to know Jesus through our participation and love. Coupled with this event is also an opportunity for adults to grow in experiencing Jesus through a Bible Study at 10:30am and 6:30pm.

As you can see, there are several techniques God is offering us at St. John’s to engage in nurturing many of the relationships we are blessed to receive. As you read through this newsletter may you be open to how God is encouraging you to nurture your relationships.

Peace, Pastor Mike

LUTHERAN SERVICES CAROLINAS’ MINISTRY TO VETERANS IN SC Kinard Manor – a Veterans’ Ministry of Lutheran Services Carolinas Kinard Manor currently provides transitional housing for up to ten homeless male veterans. While we receive and appreciate many in-kind donations to Kinard Manor, we are in need of monetary contributions to this important ministry to help close the gap in the budget while providing the quality of care that LSC is well known for. Checks may be made out to Lutheran Services Carolinas, and please include Veterans Services on the memo line, and mailed to 1118 Union Street, Columbia, SC 29201. In addition, gas

cards to share with volunteers who transport veterans to doctor’s appointments in Columbia and Greenville would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Lutheran Services Carolinas - Case Management Ministry for Veterans LSC has added a $70,000 challenge goal to the state-wide synod approved Love One Another campaign in SC to address a critical need in the state. We continually receive calls from veterans with families who could not be served in traditional transitional housing. These veterans are often not permitted in homeless shelters because the age of the children exceeds allowable ages. Services for these individuals are extremely limited. A case management

program at LSC would allow us to further the continuum of services provided to veterans. Gifts and pledges to the Love One Another campaign can be mailed to Lutheran Services Carolinas, Love One Another Campaign, 1118 Union Street, Columbia, SC 29201. If you would like to designate your gift, please include “Veteran Services” in the memo line. Thank you!

CAST CALL! Its time for the Annual Training and Lunch party for all current Crucifer &

Acolyte Service Team members, as well as anyone interested in joining the team! CAST is a

well as a fun way to make friends. If you are a current CAST member or you are a student

going into 5th grade through 12th grade, and you would like to serve, please plan to attend

this training and lunch party on Sunday, August 12th, immediately following worship.

Training for ALL will begin right after lunch. Parent pick up at 2:00pm. If you are a current

member and cannot attend, if you are interested in joining our team, please call or text Mrs.

Dana. Those not returning to the team should also call or text Mrs. Dana at 864-978-2422

Property Committee Progress

Hopefully you have noticed the activities that have been going

on at St. John’s in regards to Property Ministry this year.

Below is a list of some of those:

• Painting of Children’s Sunday School Wing – thank you to all in involved in volunteering getting that

done.

• The stairwells and railings painted.

• Had roofs on the Church Campus inspected and repairs performed. Replaced roof on shed in back

parking lot.

• Had work performed to repair brick and mortar issues in various areas and treated those areas to

reduce future issues.

• Work is in process by volunteers to sand, stain and repair Children’s Sunday School chairs and tables.

• Court Yard Beautification project.

As you can see much is going on at St. John’s and Your Tithes and Your Volunteering is making this happen.

Thank you so much for your support in maintaining and continued beautification of St. John’s.

Backpack Buddies at Mary H. Wright resumes this month. School schedules resume August 20th. Our Backpack Buddies Program has been supported by St. John's members for several years. Children in need at Mary H. Wright Elementary School often have no meals when they are not at school. Full individually wrapped meal items are packaged and delivered to Mary H. Wright to be taken home on weekends and holidays. A reminder list of desired items may be found below. These items can be picked up while doing your regular shopping and placed in designated bins at the church. The program also needs volunteers who meet in the downstairs kitchen and pack the meals. Watch for dates and times to be announced. Anyone is welcome! Be sure to bring food items on Sunday, September 9th at 10am for Rally Sunday!

The Call Committee would like to give everyone an update on our search for our next Associate Pastor. We have looked over numerous resumes and interviewed several potential Pastors, unfortunately, we have not found the right fit for St. Johns. The role of an Associate Pastor cannot be understated and we want to make sure we find the best candidate possible. We are currently still interviewing applicants and feel we will find the right person in the coming months. Please keep the Committee and St. Johns in your prayers as we continue to search for our next Associate Pastor. Christopher Towe Erica McCarthy

The end of summer means it’s time for PEP Day! Our third collaborative celebration with Pine Street Elementary will take place on Friday, August 17th, 10am - 1pm. During the school’s Meet the Teacher event, St. John’s will host the families for lunch, activities with the Boy Scouts, visits from the fire and police departments, and active fun with inflatable play structures and water activities. The school PTO is once again serving their teacher luncheon in the Fellowship Hall, as it provides a friendly space that allows all the teachers to visit and share a relaxed lunch. PEP is a great way for us to be a good neighbor to the school and to show the community that our doors are always open! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Cheryl Pettis or Leslie Connor. We’ll need extra hands all week as we prepare, host, and clean up!

Blessing of the Backpacks will be Sunday, August 19th during Chapel time at 10:00AM in the Children’s Wing. All individuals from preschool through high school are invited to join in this Blessing!

Save the date! September 9th is Rally Day, the kick-off for our new Sunday school year! Make plans to join us at 10:00am in the PLC to find out all about the class lineups for children, youth, and adults, as well as a special first-ever at St. John's surprise.

Summer Sunday School Opportunities! New and fun Sunday School Classes are continuing for both adults and

children continuing through Rally Day on September 9th.

Be sure to include Sunday School in your plans this summer!

author David Lose invites the reader to engage in a conversation, one that he

imagines discussing around his kitchen table, about seven major questions of the Bible. Join us in the PLC

Conference Room for great discussion!

Fireside Chat with Pastor Mike … This opportunity is geared toward Young Adults and Parents of young

families. They gather in the fellowship hall and follow an informal conversational format as we discuss a variety

of topics. The hopeful outcome of this experience is that the participants will grow deeper in their

understanding of how to better engage God in their daily life experiences.

We had a super, amazing, high-energy week at Hero CentralHero CentralHero CentralHero Central VBS! VBS! VBS! VBS! The kids discussed heroes from the Bible and the qualities that make each of us God’s Heroes. In addition, our VBS heroes actively engaged in science and craft activities that reinforced the Bible story and connected to the hero codes. The kids absolutely loved the energetic music and the dynamic recreation activities! The program concluded on Friday evening with a potluck meal followed by a musical performance of favorite Hero Central songs and a review of the week by our oldest heroes! Fantastic job superheroes!! This was a wonderful week of outreach and faith formation with endless excitement and tons of fun! Many thanks to all of our heroic volunteers who generously gave of their time and talents to make this week of programming a tremendous success!!

Summer Children’s Sunday School Wind Up!

Our 'thinking outside the box' Sunday School is continuing.

person who may have special expertise in the topic! Kids Pre-K through 5th are encouraged to come and have

fun while getting to know everyone better! Our youth members will be assisting on Sundays as well. Pastor Mike

has tied in a Bible lesson for each Sunday theme which he will go over in the children’s sermons. All generations

are encouraged to hop downstairs at 10am to see what excitement is happening! This is a summer to HAVE FUN

HISTORY IN ACTION or . . . A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!

AUGUST 2018

Does God Take A Holiday?Does God Take A Holiday?Does God Take A Holiday?Does God Take A Holiday?

Have you noticed how few people we've had at our Sunday services this summer? Well yes, it is summertime and that means VACATION TIME!! While we aren't at our home church, have we thought about visiting a church service at the beach, in the mountains, or even in another country? It's great to get away from our daily work at the office, school, and housework. We need a chance to relax, have fun, see different places or visit faraway friends and family. Wherever we go and whatever we do, couldn't we include God in our plans? Does God take a holiday? Please read the following message from the August 4,

1968 bulletin back cover and decide how you will take God along the way. ~ Robin Hunsinger ~

VACATION AND VOCATION* *Taken from the August 4, 1968 St. John's Bulletin

For millions of North Americans, the words 'vacation'

and 'travel' take on special significance this month. We have more leisure time that ever before, sociologists tell us. There are better highways to take us where we want to go, and so we have become a people on the move. Recreation and tourism have become 'big business' in the United States and Canada, and in many areas they represent the fastest growing industry.

Lutherans, too, will be on the move this month. They will be moving temporarily to the beaches, and the mountains, to state parks and national parks, to remote lakes and big cities, and to hundreds of other popular vacation spots. Chances are, wherever they go, a ministry of the Lutheran Church in America will be nearby.

There are 6,242 congregations of the Lutheran Church in America spread out through the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. Visiting Lutheran churches on a vacation trip can be a real first-hand education in the breadth and variety of the Lutheran Church on the North America continent. The LCA's 1968 Yearbook provides a handy state-by-state directory of congregations, and makes a useful 'travel guide' for the vacationing Lutheran.

Lutheran congregations are happy to welcome visitors; but the LCA has moved out to minister to people at the popular recreation areas too. There are Lutheran ministries at many state and national parks, and Lutheran services are conducted at a growing number of camp-grounds across the country. Experiments in ministry are also being conducted at mountain resorts, and at recreational facilities near metropolitan areas. Behind all the experiments in leisure ministry lies the assumption that 'vacation' is part of a Christian's 'vocation'. A Christian accepts his leisure time as a gift from God, and spends it just as responsibly and creatively as he spends his working hours. Part of a Christian's leisure time goes to worship, part goes to service of others, and part goes to self-renewal. The church's proclamation of God's Word is as relevant to the man on the beach as to the man in the office. Both men deeply need the assurance and challenge that an awareness of God's presence brings. The church's mission goes on every day of every month; and, wherever they are, Lutherans are invited to join in that mission.
