By MICHAELA KENDALL The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER - Earlier this month, the State of Iowa His- toric Preservation Office notified the Grundy Center Preservation Com- mission that they have been awarded a $10,000 Certified Local Govern- ment grant. This grant, which includes a $1,000 match provided by the city of Grundy Center with an addition- al $3,000 contributed through local volunteer hours, will give the lo- cal Preservation Commission a big boost in upcoming projects. “The funds will enable Grundy Center to move forward in terms of historic preservation,” said Joan Schuller, Preservation Commission Chair. The group’s first steps include the creation of an inventory that identi- fies Main Street and other significant historical properties within the city. “Developing an understanding of the historical context of Grundy Center’s buildings will create an awareness of their significance as the commission works to connect the past with a plan for the future,” said Schuller. “We are seeking to educate the community and coun- cil about the importance of historic preservation in order to ensure fu- ture community vitality.” Mary Doak, another member of the Commission, said that the group will do this by using the grant money to employ a consultant to work with them and the State Historical Preser- vation Office to plan for preservation in Grundy Center. This consultant with help the group decide which projects they should work on first. One of the long term goals of the Commission, according to Schuller and Doak, is to obtain eligibility on the State Historical Registry, a path- way to funding utilizing tax credits and other incentives. “The whole process requires us to be an educational resource to help our community become aware of the value of preservation,” Doak said. “These are important steps in getting our main street district moving for- ward towards eligibility for the state and national historic district lists.” Work on the plan should begin early in 2017. Other members of the Preser- vation Commission include: Bruce Gordon, Mike Steinmeyer and Dar- ren Flater. GRUNDY CENTER - Earlier this month, the State of Iowa His-toric Preservation Office notified the Grundy Center Preservation Com-mission that they have been awarded a $10,000 Certified Local Govern-ment grant.

This grant, which includes a $1,000 match provided by the city of Grundy Center with an addition-al $3,000 contributed through local volunteer hours, will give the lo-cal Preservation Commission a big boost in upcoming projects.

“The funds will enable Grundy Center to move forward in terms of historic preservation,” said Joan Schuller, Preservation Commission Chair.

The group’s first steps include the creation of an inventory that identi-fies Main Street and other significant historical properties within the city.

“Developing an understanding of the historical context of Grundy Center’s buildings will create an awareness of their significance as the commission works to connect the past with a plan for the future,” said Schuller. “We are seeking to educate the community and coun-cil about the importance of historic preservation in order to ensure fu-ture community vitality.”

Mary Doak, another member of the Commission, said that the group will do this by using the grant money to employ a consultant to work with them and the State Historical Preser-vation Office to plan for preservation in Grundy Center. This consultant with help the group decide which projects they should work on first.

One of the long term goals of the Commission, according to Schuller and Doak, is to obtain eligibility on the State Historical Registry, a path-way to funding utilizing tax credits and other incentives.

“The whole process requires us to be an educational resource to help our community become aware of the value of preservation,” Doak said. “These are important steps in getting our main street district moving for-ward towards eligibility for the state and national historic district lists.”

Work on the plan should begin early in 2017.

Other members of the Preser-vation Commission include: Bruce Gordon, Mike Steinmeyer and Dar-ren Flater.
