MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF NAAMSA

AFRICA’S PREMIER AUTOMOTIVE LIFESTYLE EVENT – THE JOHANNESBURG INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW - PREPARES FOR 2011

On behalf of NAAMSA and the Johannesburg Expo Centre, our joint venture partners for the next three Johannesburg International Motor Shows, it gives me great pleasure to introduce the 2011 Johannesburg International Motor Show.

This will be the second such event held under this banner. The rst Johannesburg International Motor Show, staged in 2008, superseded the Auto Africa Motor Show events rst held in 1996. Johannesburg International Motor Show 2011 will again take place under the accreditation of the International Organisation of Vehicle Manufacturers and is only one of four motor show events in the Southern hemisphere to enjoy this world class accreditation status. Importantly, it is one of only two such events on the African continent.

The Johannesburg International Motor Show 2011 will take place over the period 6th to 16th October. The timing is ideal for the South African motor industry to illustrate to the world the way in which it has restructured and realigned itself to the same challenges facing the global motor industry. The South African motor industry is no different to the industry around the world. It is emerging out of an extremely tough business environment in which it has been forced to re-examine the business model to ensure global competitiveness in the years ahead. Together with our partners in the supply component industry, major focus has been placed upon localisation of component manufacture. Signi cant investment on the part of the supplier industry has resulted in a much leaner, technologically capable and skilled component industry enabling OEMs to target key strategic global markets.

We are working closely with Government to ensure the new Automotive Production

Development Program takes the industry to new levels in the years ahead.

The outlook for the South African domestic vehicle market in 2010 is encouraging. We forecast growth of around 8% year on year. Importantly, we anticipate slow, but steady growth in the medium term.

The South African Motor Industry remains one of the most competitive in the world. With 1,198 models and 60 marques competing for what is, in global terms, a relatively small market. It is intensely competitive and demanding. The South African customer justi ably demands an outstanding product and equally, the highest levels of after sales service.

Despite the severe recession we have been through, the South African manufacturing industry has invested approximately R9 billion over the past three years and an anticipated further R4,6 billion in 2010.

The Johannesburg International Motor Show 2011 is an all inclusive event accommodating two additional expos, being the “Johannesburg Truck & Bus Show” and the Automotive Allied Industries “Autoshop”.

The broad based objectives for the 2011 event are: To showcase the South African Motor

Industry and to project it’s global competitiveness

To stimulate business and investment opportunities

To showcase new products, technologies and services

To provide world class marketing and engagement opportunities in a unique lifestyle environment.

To re-enforce the bond of the motor industry with the South African consumer

To leverage new business and trade opportunities while stimulating enterprise development

The event enjoys the endorsement and support of various major industry bodies, including NAACAM and RMI.

I wish all concerned in the planning and preparation phase of JIMS 2011 much success.

Best wishesDavid PowelsPresident

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF NAACAM

NAACAM, the national association representing the automotive component manufacturing sector in South Africa, has agreed with the organisers of the Johannesburg International Motor Show that components and replacement parts will be a focus activity at the Show in 2011.

NAACAM will use the attractions of the Johannesburg International Motor Show 2011 to promote the capabilities of the sector to the trade visitors from many countries. In particular, we want to invite buyers from throughout Africa to see the merits of obtaining their spare parts here in Africa instead of through the long pipelines from other continents, and to this end we are working with the organisers to establish a database of African automotive buyers.

In addition to this, however, the Johannesburg International Motor Show 2011 promises to bring together representatives of vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers to network with the many South African manufacturers who want to demonstrate their ability to grow the local content of vehicles here, as well as increase the exports of components which has the potential to exceed the $6 billion achieved in the past.

NAACAM encourages all involved in the automotive sector to support this international event and invites foreign companies to visit Johannesburg International Motor Show 2011 and nd out what the South African automotive component producers can do.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF RMI

RMI endorses Johannesburg International Motor Show 2011

South Africa’s Retail Motor Industry organisation (RMI) has endorsed the Johannesburg International Motor Show which is scheduled to take place at the city’s National Exhibition Centre in October next year.

Jeff Osborne, CEO of the RMI, says the organisation’s main themes will be aimed at attracting career seekers into the automotive sector, highlighting the importance of skills development within the service arena and providing industry relevant information regarding the aspects of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), which will be implemented during the rst half of 2011.

“The proactive stance taken by the RMI with regard to implementation of the CPA has given the organisation signi cant insight into how the Act will operate. We believe that members of the trade, as well as consumers, will bene t from our expertise,” he says.

Osborne adds that the organisation will seek to highlight the vital role the motor industry plays in South Africa’s economy, with a view to attracting high calibre job seekers to the sector.

“The industry constantly needs bright young people, particularly, to look to establish careers within the industry. Our aim will be to overcome a general perception that working in the automotive sector is dull and unexciting. On the contrary, there are many rewards to be had from a career in the industry.

“With the assistance of our members we will aim to unlock that potential, showcasing the array of technical training opportunities that exist across a wide range of automotive applications. We will also look to highlight the advantages of skills upgrading and further education within the sector,” he says.

Jeff Osborne - CEORetail Motor Industry Organisation

The automotive sector, regarded as the leading manufacturing sector and contributing, in total, 5,9% to the

country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2009, has been identi ed in government’s 2007 and 2010 revised National Industrial Policy Framework and Industrial Policy Action Plan as one of the priority sectors to fast-track growth and development. The positive developments and achievements in the South African automotive industry, since 1995, have been driven by a supportive automotive policy regime. The 2020 vision under the new Automotive Production Development Programme (APDP), shared by government and industry, is to double vehicle production from the 2006 levels of about 600 000 units to 1,2 million units by 2020, with a much stronger development of the automotive component sector.

The South African government’s target of a 6% economic growth rate, increased foreign direct investment, skills development and an increase in downstream bene ciated exports will largely depend on future successful performance in priority sectors such as the automotive industry

Aggregate employment in the automobile manufacturing industry in 2009 amounted to about 30 100 persons whilst employment in the component manufacturing industry was of the order of 61 000 employees. Total employment in the trade area, namely in the vehicle sales

and vehicle maintenance and servicing eld, currently amounts to about 203 000 persons. Employment in the tyre manufacturing industry is of the order of 5 700 persons. The automotive industry exhibits a high multiplier effect due to the creation of opportunities in automotive and related areas and maintains direct linkages with a large number of support services and businesses. Employment ratios vary from country to country, but generally for every worker in the manufacture of a motor vehicle there are at least two or more employed in the component manufacturing industry.

Main automotive trading partners

South Africa’s main automotive trading partners (exports plus imports) for 2009 re ected the country’s global linkages with the OEM parent companies in Germany, the USA and Japan. Germany comprised R39,98 billion or 28,4% of South Africa’s total automotive trade in 2009, followed by the USA with R19,08 billion or 13,5% and Japan with R17,40 billion or 12,3% of total automotive trade.

and Extra-heavy trucks used by the freight transportation industry as well as all types of buses for commuter transportation and tourism sectors.

The event will take place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, NASREC from 6-16 October 2011 and will be supported by transportation focussed organizations, including:

based OEMs and parent companies in relation with rst tier multina¬tional suppliers. Consequently, component manufacturers using South Africa’s competitive advantages seek contact with outside partners for market access, technology, process know-how, production rationalization and other joint venture bene ts.

South Africa’s vehicle assembly industry is concentrated in three of the country’s nine provinces, namely Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, and in close proximity to its suppliers. However, increasingly some automotive development is also taking place in the Western Cape.

Made in South Africa

The essence of South Africa’s Automotive Policy is to encourage vehicle manufacturing in South Africa to specialize in one or two high volume models, generate economies of scale bene ts via exports and import low volume models not manufactured in the country to complement their domestic model mix. This approach also assists component suppliers through higher volumes and reduced complexity.

Automotive clusters

In respect of the automotive component manufacturers, the exporting link for the majority of these companies is the South African

based OEMs and parent companies in relation with rst tier multina¬tional suppliers.
