Condemning our brothers and sisters
As in the Gospel reading today, John 8:1-11, do we wait
impatiently to cast the first stone? If we were at this long
ago gathering place at the foot of our savior, full of our
own sinfulness, trying to trip him up, waiting to prove
that “we are right” with stones in our hands what words
would Jesus have written down to stop us? What words
could he this day mark in the sand to make me put down
my selfish ways? What fears of disclosure living deep
within my soul would cause me to stop, to put down our
stones and quickly walk away? We all have sins we have
often repented of; none of us are saints. He forgives us
time after time. Yet do we forgive others and worst of all,
DO WE FORGIVE OURSELVES? What words would he write to stop me from convicting others, myself? Yet, Jesus says to the
wretched woman. “Nor do I condemn you!” God loves us unconditionally! But, precisely because we are loved so completely by
him, we are not let us off Scott free. The stipulation for our reprieve is, “You may go. But from now on, avoid this sin.” Today our
church gives us the necessary grace to “Go and sin no more” ; to “ avoid this sin”. Yet, few of us take this help. Time and time
again, we refuse a helping hand and stick to our own poor abilities. Yet the Catholic Church ( your church) offers this help in
Reconciliation any time. ATTEND the Reconciliation Service here at St Anthony at 7:00 PM this Wednesday.
Don’t wait to see what Jesus writes about you. Throw down your stones!
