Year C

We respectfully acknowledge the

Turrbal people, as the traditional owners

and caretakers of the land which is the

Toowong Catholic Parish.

We acknowledge the Elders, past and

present. May we, too, be good stewards of

this land.

THE CROSSES OF LENT

THE CROSS OF PASSION

You can’t just blame the Church’s negativity and distrust of the passions and emotions on St. Augustine. Augustine himself was a passionate man, not only spending his youth on a never-ending quest for the answer to life, but being in a de-facto relationship for 15 years which saw the birth of his son. When he was converted to Christianity by reading St Paul talking about grace, he found a source for all human misery in the passions, even suggesting that we are all born in Original Sin because no one is conceived without passion (if only!).

For Augustine, passion meant sin!

But if others hadn’t perpetuated the thought and found sense in it, like many other things he had to say (like unbaptised children going to hell!), it would have remained buried in the sheer volume of works he wrote. But there were significant numbers who found solace in this rejection of a very powerful influence on human lives and so it seemed to dominate catholic thought in the middle of last century

Since passion became identified with sin, God could have nothing to do with it and so we were left with a passionless God, an in-control Christ and a sterile Spirit, and an ethic that distrusted anything that created joy. What a tragedy!

They real change came with the re-discovery of passion in God – a God who loves with a mother’s love that can never forget her child; a Jesus who can weep at the tomb of a friend, get angry at people’s unwillingness to listen, and experience fear as he approaches death; a Spirit who can pray in people in strange ways. Once again, passion was seen as the power for good that it can be, rather than just a power for evil.

Like many things in the world, the greatest powers in our control can be used for good or used for ill. Our passions are not to be distrusted, but to be directed to good. The cross that they can be for all of us, we bring to this Easter to be redeemed in Christ.

Passionate and loving God, You share our humanity and show mercy to the sinner.

Look not on the sins of the past but lift from our hearts the failures that weigh us down.

Help us to embrace the world You have given us That we may transform the dark side of its passion into the life and joy of Easter.

Grant this through Christ, our liberator from sin, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

holy and mighty God for ever and ever. Amen.

Fifth Sunday of Lent

7th April 2019

Salma featured in Project Compassion 2013. At the time she was pregnant with her first child, sick and terribly frightened. In distress, she sought the help of a midwife trained by Caritas’ Safe Motherhood Program. Six years on, she’s now a healthy

mother of two strong, happy children. Salma is committed to giving her children the education they need to provide them with the future she hoped for.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help reduce infant mortality rates in countries like Bangladesh and proved hope to pregnant women in

remote communities for happy and healthy families.

Lives change when we all give 100%. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or call 1800 024 413.

YOU’RE INVITED

to our parish Potluck Dinner on Easter Saturday, 20 April (following the Easter Vigil Mass),

organised by the St Ignatius PPC and Peace Through Justice Group.

All contributions (main dish, salads, deserts, etc) are very welcome and should be delivered to the hall from 4pm that day (please mark

your name on the dishes to ensure their proper return).

Helpers are also needed in the kitchen and for moving chairs & tables etc. If you can help, please E: [email protected] Thank you.

SPECIAL REQUEST Recently there was an article about Pastoral Carers (Chaplains) in Centacare’s Prison Ministry. A parishioner visits a low security prison for mothers with new babies and toddlers, where some of the ladies are engaged in knitting scarves for the homeless. Wondering if perhaps some of our parishioners were able to donate some wool. If possible, please drop to Parish Office.

SHARE THE DIGNITY’S “DIGNITY DRIVE”. Once again our Parish will have marked boxes at the back of both churches + Parish Office for kind donations during April. The purpose is to collect sanitary items for women in the community who are unable to meet the financial burden of their period. www.sharethedignity.com.au
