NIPER-Kolkata: Vision and Mission

National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Kolkata (NIPER-K) was created in 2007 under the aegis of Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizer as a centre of excellence for higher education, research and development in pharmaceutical sciences. This followed establishment of NIPER Mohali, which is the first national level institute in pharmaceutical sciences with a proclaimed objective of becoming a centre of excellence for advanced studies and research in pharmaceutical sciences. NIPERs are conceived to provide leadership in pharmaceutical sciences and related areas not only within the country, but also to the countries in South East Asia, South Asia and Africa. NIPER is a member of Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities to become a globally recognized brand.

The institute was declared as an Institute of National importance by Government of India through Act of Parliament (NIPER Act 1998 & NIPER amendment Act 2007). At present the Institute is housed at Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (CSIR-IICB), a premier Institute of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, India.

Since inception till-date,nine batches (Total 364) completed M.S.(Pharm.) degree from NIPER Kolkata.

Research done at NIPER Kolkata has led to 49 scientific publications in reputed international peer reviewed journals. In recognition of this significant input to country's drug industry covering drug development and research, Steering committee has approved starting from academic year 2016-2017, Ph.D. program in three academic disciplines of pharmaceuticals at NIPER Kolkata and 10 students have been admitted. NIPER Kolkata is happy to share that both the toppers for NIPER Ph.D. program during this academic year are from NIPER Kolkata.

NIPER Kolkata in pursuit of its mission:

Imparting quality education in the areas of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Promotion of innovative and translational research. Study of national/ international pharmaceutical policy issues. Creation of specialized centres to cater to the needs of pharmaceutical industries and

other research and teaching institutes.

Objectives

To tone up the level of pharmaceutical education and research.

To produce leaders in the field and provide opportunities for training of future teachers and research scientists for the industry and the profession.

To be a center for innovation in pharmaceutical sciences and technology.

To encourage research and studies in new and emerging areas like discovery of pharmacologically active molecules, cellular and molecular biology, immunology and immunodiagnostics, recombinant DNA technology and monoclonal antibody technology, novel drug delivery systems, chemical and biochemical process technology, etc.

To provide scientific footing to traditional medicines.

NIPER has created a history in introducing a course curriculum on rare diseases leading to

2 credits (40 hours of teaching) for the first time in the global context at the master‟s level

at NIPER. Course curriculum has been designed on the initiative of DoP in collaboration of

University of Minnesota, USA.

Creating global alliance of institutes of research innovation and technology

development:

It is academic and research performance has already drawn attention to the MNC drug

industry giants in India like Sanofi and Natreon. NIPER Kolkata at the visitor‟s conference

has signed MoU with Sanofi, Natreon and ASG Biochem.. Collaboration will cover

innovation and technology up-gradationof research areas identified in the national

workshop with Industry and academic institutions.

Collaboration with National and International Institutions:

1. IIT Madras and NIPER-Kolkata on Synthetic Biological aspects.

2. National Institute of Biologicals (NIB), Noida for Biological safety and quality control.

3. All India Institute of Hygiene & Public Health (AIIH&PH) Kolkata on global health care solutions.

4. National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) on antibiotic resistance.

5. Alagappa University, Tamil Nadu and NIPER-Kolkata on aspects related to drug testing in animal models.

6. JSS University for research activities in the field of testing of novel active pharmaceutical ingredients in animal model & pharmaceutical studies

7. NIPER-Kolkata has signed a MoU with BMS (R&D), Bangalore on Nano-technology applications and development activities.

8. NIPER-Kolkata has initiated a process to establish a centre of excellence in rare diseases and started a dialogue with its experts and also seeking collaboration with University of Minnesota, USA.

9. NIPER-Kolkata has signed a MoU with Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Kolkata to develop a new product related to identifying and detoxifying agent, a newer adjuvant, which is least toxic to the animal and best immunogenic with regard to Anti-Snake Venom serum production.

Presently, NIPER Kolkata is working on establishing multi-centric drug discovery

platform and a unit of Genome and Personalized Medicine.

NIPER-Kolkata has initiated a process to establish a centre of excellence in rare

diseases and started a dialogue with various experts and also seeking collaboration

with NIH, USA to assist in rare diseases initiative through skill development in rare

diseases teaching and diagnosis through use of 2nd Generation genome sequencing.

Besides, following collaborative efforts are either accomplished or undergoing at

various stages –

a. Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata and NIPER-Kolkata are together

setting up a joint centre on poison information cell.

b. CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata and NIPER-Kolkata

research in technology development in medical devices.

c. Dr Reddy‟s Laboratory, Hyderabad and NIPER-Kolkata on product development.

d. Presently NIPER-Kolkata is working on establishing multi-centric drug discovery

Special Course: Rare Diseases (2 credits)

A special course on Rare Diseases leading to 2 credits was introduced at NIPER Kolkata for

the first time during 2016-17. This is a unique course and has been taken up for the first time at

the university level in the global context. A total of 39 students from all the disciplines namely

PI, MC and NP went through the course. During the course several seminars on

interdisciplinary areas were also conducted and poster presentation was done by all the

students. They also visited during the course TATA Medical Centre and Apollo hospital,

Kolkata during the course to attend seminars on rare diseases. All the students successfully

completed the course.

Various Initiatives @ NIPER-Kolkata

Public Financial Management System (PFMS) has been implemented. Expenditure bookings are being done w.e.f. 01.01.2017.

Initiative has been taken for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to NIPER-Kolkata MS. Pharm. & Ph. D Students.

All Tenders are being floated through Central Public Procurement Process (e Procurement) of Govt. of India.

NIPER-Kolkata hold a Certificate issued by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt.of India for Duty Exemption and Central Excise Duty Exemption.

The process of digitalization of all documents and files has been initiated as part of Digital India Mission.

Official Notifications are being circulated through Website and other Social Networking Sites like Facebook/ Twitter/ Whatsapp.

NIPER-Kolkata is now been registered at GeM (Government e Marketplace).

Endowment Funds

Two endowment funds were received during the year: Rs.1.25 Lakh from Natreon Inc. Pvt Ltd-USA and Rs. 2 Lakhs from Prof.B.C.Pal.

NIPER Kolkata is engaged in providing consultancy support to Emcee Pharmaceuticals (P) Ltd, Kolkata for developing oral liquid solution. As a part of this project Emcee Pharmaceuticals (P) Ltd is providing man power support by sponsoring one Research Assistant.

PradhanMantriBhartiyaJanaushadhiPariyojana (PMBJP) NIPER Kolkata is now initiating to be part of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
