5th Grade: Impressionism Landscape, Part 02
Overview: You will create a drawing based on
Impressionists and Post-Impressionists such as
Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Vincent
Van Gogh.
Estimated Time: 20 minutes or more if you like
Materials Needed:
• 8.5” x 11” paper
• Pencil
• Crayons
• A placemat (keep your tabletops clean)
Activity Explanation: This is part 2 of the lesson. You will draw a landscape by looking at a
photo and drawing lines to create an outline. When you color your landscape, you will color
with three colors in each area to simulate the Impressionist style. You may use your samples
created last week to help guide your color choices.
Three Quick Things to Know:
• Use the test sheet to see which color combinations you enjoy!
• When creating your drawing, do not focus on details. Impressionism is meant to give
you a “quick glimpse” or “impression” of the scene.
• When coloring, do not make your first colors extremely dark. It will be difficult to add
layers if you do.
Tasks/Steps: 1. Select a landscape photograph to use as a reference. I have included two choices of
pictures that I have taken. If you have your own picture that you would like to use,
please feel free to do so.
2. Do a simple, pencil drawing of your landscape. The drawing should just be the outlines
only. Draw lightly so that mistakes can be erased.
3. Begin coloring your landscape with crayons. Just like our samples from last week, each
section will be colored using 3 different crayons. For the first colors, color lightly so you
can build each layer.
Method of Communication: If you have questions or would like to share your monster with
me, please email a picture of it to me at [email protected]!
