od has a “positive” answer for you to live by, whenever you have

a “negative” attitude about yourself and your life’s situation.

God’s positive attitude means saying, “YES I CAN DO IT.” It means having a good mind set with a productive positive attitude. It means having a healthy attitude of feelings and beliefs about yourself and the events happening around you. It means having a good attitude knowing that the Lord is with you. Together, (You with the Lord’s help) can get through life looking on the brighter side of things. It also means looking up and seeing the hope which is in Jesus Christ. It is keeping your mind and heart focused upon the good things about life with the Lord’s help. The Lord really loves you.

Your negative attitude means saying, “no I can’t do it.” It means having a defeated attitude and a bad outlook on life with doubtfulness and real lack of faith. It means refusing to see the good in things. A negative attitude opposes the affirmative attitude that the positive attitude has.

You might say, “You have such trials and troubles. The problems that you carry are

“SO” bad. No one has things as bad for them like you. All you do is struggle with money and stresses everyday. You may feel you do such foolish things and trouble just follows you. Maybe you feel you will never going to get out of debt. That you will never be able to have success in life... never this and never that! Life is too hard and you can’t keep going on. These problems are too much!”

God’s word says: I Peter 5:7 Casting all of your cares on him; for he careth for you...”

God’s positive attitude: The Lord says, “ I LOVE YOU! Please bring all of your problems and troubles to me. I’ll help you get through them and I will help you learn by your mistakes to be a better person. I will carry your problems. You won’t have to get through this alone. I’ll be there for you, Trust Me and have faith in my Word.

Keep a positive confession in your mouth in spite of how you feel. Your head and heart have to come into line with God’s word and believe. Spiritual growth works through positive confession of God’s word into our lives. Let us pray to change our minds and that help us to think more with our positive attitudes towards a right mindset.

Paul has been a farmer since he was a young boy, working his family farm in Ontario, Canada with his brothers and father until 1997, when he purchased a 38 hectare farm, just one mile east of his dad’s. Paul accepted Jesus Christ as His Lord in 1995 and has never been the same. Paul and his wife, Jenny have combined their unique talents of farming and writing to share this story:

When I was a kid and I walked our family farm, I enjoyed being on the fields. It was fun to watch things grow. As a kid, I could see God in everything. I didn’t understand who God was but I knew God was there. When things didn’t work the way we expected, like poor crops or bad weather or animals dying, I just thought that was the way farming is. Now I know differently. There are principles to farming which God has set out in the Bible which brings success. In my journey as a farmer, I have slowly learnt some of these principles, which I call farming, God style.

Farming, God Style -Following the Sower

Page 5: 5talents Magazine October 2013

In 1997, I learnt my first principle: Follow the Sower. I was an electrician at General Motors, farming land which I rented in the area, as well as my dad’s farm, when the Lord nudged me to check out a beautiful farm which was for sale one mile east. Reluctantly, as I walked the land with the realtor, I felt the Lord restore my childhood dream of buying my own farm. Prices had skyrocketed over farm land in our country, and for a while, I had accepted that the only land I would ever own would be a shared inheritance with my brothers. God had a different plan. To my surprise, the farmers who owned this property accepted my humble asking price, as all the interested buyers suddenly moved on. If God hadn’t led me to inquire about the farm, I would never have become a landowner. Success is guaranteed when you follow and obey the Sower of the seed.

Another principle is to give as generously as the Sower gives. In farming, being a good

neighbor is necessary for survival. When your tractor breaks down on a muddy fall day and you are desperate to get the corn in before more showers steal every cent of your profit in drying costs, the kindness of neighbors who take the time to roll out chains and pull out your only equipment can’t be measured. I have found that giving whenever the Lord asks, and giving generously guarantees success, whether it be to a stranger or the farmer down the road. A few years back, when we had a power failure and the farmer two roads over was desperate for a generator, we had no idea we would need his freezer space for our chickens just a few years later. Giving generously is crucial for farming, God style, as your life is as much a testimony as your crops.

Farming, God-style, requires courage. In 2008, when God asked my beloved wife, Jenny and I to fallow the entire farm, I

55Talents Magazine Oct 2013

Page 6: 5talents Magazine October 2013

agonized over the decision. I had faithfully rotated one-seventh of my farm to fallow every year, since giving the land a rest is mandatory for sustainability. However, this was a different mandate. God knew the rest we would need, and longed to show us that fallowing the land on a seven-year cycle replenished more than just nutrients to the soil. Fallowing replenishes the farmer, and in doing so, replenishes the farmer ’s family. As I gritted my teeth and obeyed my God, there was a long line of farmers driving up the lane, asking to rent our farmland, since they had heard through the astonished grapevine, that we would be fallowing the whole farm that year. It took courage to follow God’s law of rest. I believe that honoring God’s blueprints in the Bible about fallowing, pruning and harvesting, always reaps the greatest measure of success.

In 2009, God prompted us to change direction from traditional cash crop farming

to organic farming. In Canada, cash crop farming involves a continual cycle of tilling the land, planting the treated seed, spraying the land with pesticides and herbicides, adding commercial fertilizers and then harvesting the crops. Often the land is sprayed with a strong herbicide to prepare for the next year ’s crop. I had done this all my life, and now my wife urged me to consider a method of farming for which I had no experience

6 5Talents Magazine Oct 2013 w w w . 5 Ta l e n t s M A G . c o m

Page 7: 5talents Magazine October 2013

and no desire to undertake. Nevertheless, after much prayer, I left my job at the car plant to farm full-time, opening a large organic vegetable operation, with free-range chickens and grass-fed beef as well as venturing into farm markets all across the Toronto area. The experience was very tough. Though the farm quickly became well known as a rising organic business, the cost of labour devoured our savings, and after two years, hard decisions had to be made to keep the business profitable. This last principle is the most important: When things get rough in farming, and they often do, keep asking God questions and wait until you hear His answers, then do it.

It was painful to let go of our staff, close up the farm market business and end our weekly vegetable bin program which blessed a hundred and fifty families all across our region with chemical-free healthy fruits and vegetables for a twenty week season. It was painful to see my wife seek other employment, knowing her dream had been to walk alongside me in farming and we could no longer afford that option. As I sought God, I knew He wanted me to keep farming, but differently. My wife suggested a pastured operation, letting the land work for the business, instead of leaching all our resources into labour costs. Humbly, we let go of the big dream of the big farm business, asking questions from God each step of the way as we transitioned our farm into an organic business based solely on grass-fed meat, sold weekly from our front farm porch store. God was our comfort and our Provider. He doesn’t change even when we must to grow forward.

Today, our farm business is very successful and we give God all the credit. Families both locally and across southern Ontario make

the trek to our farm on Fridays or Saturdays to speak with me about the food crisis we are facing, the need for healthy eating, and their gratitude that we farm with simplicity and integrity, raising our animals on organic pasture and feeding them only the oats and peas and barley we plant every season. My wife is now enjoying the freedom to write as well as working off farm, while I farm full-time, following the Sower, and enjoying the peace that comes from His presence. Organic farming or traditional farming yield different measures of success. Yet true success in farming, God-style, comes from a close partnership with Jesus. As I humbly apply the principles of His Word, I enjoy the comfort of His love, as I follow the Sower and enjoy the increase in the bountiful fields He sows.

BARNABAS FUND’S: DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE PERSECUTED CHURCH

PLEASE JOIN WITH CHRISTIANS AROUND THE WORLD ON FRIDAY 1 NOVEMBER

We are very thankful for being able to provide you with Barnabas’ Prayer Focus Update each month to enable your prayers for the persecuted Church. In light of this, we would like to share our plans for Barnabas Fund’s International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church that takes place on Friday 1 November during Suffering Church Action Week. We are urging believers around the world to set time aside on this day to remember our suffering Christian family before the Lord. We hope that you can join us.

Last year thousands of Christians around the world joined in prayer for our persecuted brothers and sisters, with events being held across the country. Prayer events were held in at least 36 countries and thousands of people joined in the day. This year the day will be focusing on children and young people as part of Suffering Church Action Week (27 October to 3 November 2013), with a special emphasis on praying for specific needs of children impacted by persecution as well as for

the next generation, who need to be courageous in their faith.

We have produced a dedicated prayer guide for the Day of Prayer that provides examples and prayer needs of Christian children across the world. To request free copies to share with others, please call 024 7623 1923 or email [email protected].

A free Inspiration Pack of resources for Suffering Church Action Week is also available with ideas for how to take action on behalf of Children of Courage; holding a Suffering Church Sunday service, fund-raising event, coffee-morning, children’s event about being courageous (perhaps as an alternative to Halloween!), Bible study or prayer meeting are just some of the ways to participate. There is also opportunity to share your plans for the event by adding to our online map at www.childrenofcourage.org. Please visit this website to order a free pack or alternatively call or email.

Thank you again for your commitment to pray for the persecuted Church. If you would like further information about the Day of Prayer and Suffering Church Action Week, please feel free to contact us.

s a young boy, I remember my mom saying to me, “Whatever you do, do it as if you were doing it for God.” For some reason

those words have stayed with me to this day, even now as a young man of 58 years of age. Whether it was washing the car or mowing the lawn . . . “remember, do it as if you were doing it for God.”

As I reflect upon those words, I believe they have served me well.

Tucked away in the inner recesses of my mind, those words motivate me today. They’ve encouraged me to live up to my potential.

Ah, there’s a great word, potential.

What is it? Potential is what could be . . . what you are capable of becoming . . . what is possible.

Here is my favorite definition. Potential is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift to God.

Over the years I’ve been blessed with great opportunities to develop my potential.

5Talents asked me to share some ways I’ve been developing my potential and using my God given

A

talents. I tell you that because honestly I feel a bit awkward talking about my accomplishments, as small as they are, in comparison to the greats of the faith.

But really, it is not about me comparing myself with anyone else, nor you comparing yourself to others. It is about each of us living up to our potential.

For me, it all started when at the young age of 19 I decided to enroll in Bible College to prepare for a life of ministry as a Pastor. I must say I didn’t go into it full of confidence. In fact, I would describe myself during that season of life, and for many years to follow, as a reluctant leader. Much like Moses in the book of Exodus, I questioned God and myself, “Who Am I that I should lead the people?”

But with that still small voice of my mom reminding me to do everything as if for God and my own burning desire to live up to my highest potential, now 39 years later, God has taken me on some amazing adventures.

I’ve had the privilege of serving churches in North Carolina, Indiana, and now Portland, Oregon.

10 5Talents Magazine Oct 2013 w w w . 5 Ta l e n t s M A G . c o m

Page 11: 5talents Magazine October 2013

It was here, 24 years ago, I had the incredible opportunity of actually starting a church with just my wife and two sons, who were only 9 and 4 at the time.

By God’s grace, and my own need and passion to grow as a leader, the church survived and actually grew to become today a church of several thousand people. This journey has allowed me to not only serve people in the greater Portland area, but literally around the world.

Through teaching, preaching, and leadership training, I’ve been privileged to speak in Africa: Uganda, Nairobi and Kenya; Napoli, Italy and all over India from Darjeeling in the north to Bangalore in the south.

I’ve been honored to provide leadership training to pastors and business people around the world. Most recently I was given the unique privilege oftraveling with the John Maxwell Team to Guatemala and being a part of training over fifteen thousand business leaders from every major influence stream. From government officials and police force personnel to educators and entertainers, we spent a week training leaders in transformational leadership.

I say none of this to impress you. I know there are many, many others who have done so much more for the Kingdom. But I do say it to impress upon you this principle, live up to your potential.

So here are a few questions for you to consider?

Are you living up to your highest potential?

Are you doing all that you can?

Is there something more inside of you that needs to come out?

The world needs it! The world needs you! What you have to offer will make a monumental difference in someone’s life.

The word potential is a powerful word that speaks of promise, opportunity, and more to come. However, to the contrary, few words are sadder than the words, unfulfilled potential.

Yet, for too many, this is where they settle down. Too many die with the music still in them, the words of a book yet to be written, or the encouragement and training yet to be offered.

Let me challenge you, as a reluctant leader, to dig down deep and discover your God-given potential. You have it! There’s more to you!

Stop believing the lies you tell yourself that keep your potential chained in a prison. Lies like . . .

Who am I?

No one would listen anyway! So many others can do it better!I have nothing to offer!I don’t have the credentials!

And the list could go on and on and on. Believe me, I know!

Stop believing the voices in your past that told you, you would never amount to anything . . . that you didn’t have what it takes . . . that you were a nobody.

Remember this, everybody is a somebody in God’s Kingdom. And God has given you no, He has gifted you with potential. Great potential! So determine today that you are not going to waste it. Make the decision right now that you are going to develop it.

The tragedy of life is not dying. The tragedy of life is never to have lived.

Make the decision today that from now on the rest of your life is going to be the best of your life and one that is lived to its highest potential.

If you don’t have a parent whose voice you hear whispering to you, then let mine suffice.

Do it! Do it now! Do it as if you are doing it for God. Live to your potential!

By the way . . . thanks mom! You’re 94 and still kicking and I dedicate this to you.

10 suggestions to develop a healthy self-image (Attitude)

Hate your sin, but never hate yourself.

01

Be quick to repent.

02When God gives you light, walk in it.

03

Stop saying negative things about yourself. God loves you and it’s wrong to hate what He loves. He has great plans for you, so you’re in conflict with Him when you speak negatively concerning your future. 04

Page 13: 5talents Magazine October 2013

Never be afraid to admit that you’ve made a mistake and don’t always assume that when things go wrong, it must be ‘my fault’.

05

Don’t meditate excessively on what you’ve done, right or wrong; both of these activities keep your mind on you! Center your thoughts on Christ. 06

Take good care of yourself physically. Make the best of what God gave you to work with, but don’t be obsessed with your appearance.

07

Never stop learning but don’t allow your education to become a point of pride. God doesn’t use you because of what’s in your head: He uses you because of what’s in your heart. 08

Realize that your talents are a gift, not something you have manufactured yourself; never look down on people who can’t do what you do.

09

Don’t despise your weaknesses they keep you dependent on God.

ur Lord Jesus Christ says in Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken

together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you”. When it comes to giving most of us immediately think that it is giving money and tithe; of course not to be neglected, it’s also a part of giving.

Let us meditate on some things we can give, so that we can empty ourselves and make room for the Lord to pour out more of His blessings so that we shall be a blessing to others.

Ourselves (life) to the Lord: Jesus Christ says, “Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.” (Luke 17:33). If we give our life to Jesus Christ, He will give His life to us. We might have given our life to Jesus Christ and accepted Him as our personal Savior; but we need to give ourselves each day and every part of our life to Him. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the

truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6). Yes, Jesus is our life and we need to experience Him and enjoy His sovereignty in every part of our life and every moment.

Faith: We might have demonstrated and experienced faith; but we need to give faith also. Bible says, “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1). The witness or testimony we share with one another encourages and builds our faith and the faith of hearers. Bible commands us, “exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” (Hebrews 3:13). Yes, as we share our testimony glorifying the Lord, our faith and those of who hears increases.

Apostle Paul writes, “We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting,

“B

Give and it will be given to you?

O

155Talents Magazine Oct 2013

Page 16: 5talents Magazine October 2013

because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other,” (2 Thessalonians 1:3). We should not be stagnant, but we should grow in our faith. Dear brethren, as we share or give our testimony glorifying the Lord, our Lord God will increase our faith and those of the hearers and do more miracles in our lives so that we can give more, glorifying His name.

Love: Our Christian life is built in love of God. Jesus Christ says, “`you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with your entire mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37-39). First, we need to give our love to our Lord God by obeying His commandments (John 14:21) and then we need to give the love we received from our Lord to others.

Bible says, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (1 John 4:7,8). So, if we are giving love, we are giving God Himself; and if we give, our Lord God will give more of Himself to us. Our Lord God is the greatest reward we can have in our lives (Genesis 15:1). Dear brethren, let us give love and receive more love.

Tithe: Our Lord Jesus Christ says, “For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” (Matthew 23:23). Here, Jesus Christ says that we need to give tithe and above that we need to give importance to justice, mercy and faith.

To receive blessings from the Lord, we need to give tithe to the Lord and the blessings we

receive from the Lord are His protection, His revelation, His prosperity, increase in finance etc. (Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” Says the LORD of hosts; Malachi 3:10,11). So, let us give tithe to our Lord God and receive His blessings in full measure and let us give more importance to justice, mercy and faith as our Lord Jesus Christ has commanded us to do.

To the poor and needy: Bible emphasizes the importance of giving to poor and needy. “For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’ (Deuteronomy 15:11). Giving to the poor and needy indeed is a command from the Lord. Bible also encourages us to give with a cheerful heart, so that the Lord will bless us. (You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. Deuteronomy 15:10).

Bible also says, “He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, and He will pay back what he has given.” (Proverbs 19:17). Yes, when we give to the poor and needy, we are giving to the Lord Himself and the Lord will repay us back. And we have seen only a few things and still there are many things for us to give and our Lord will give us the grace to give in everything as He leads. As you are meditating through the Scriptures, the Lord may inspire you to give more of your time to Him, your talents, abilities, wisdom, strength, education, possessions, home, children, etc for His

16 5Talents Magazine Oct 2013 w w w . 5 Ta l e n t s M A G . c o m

Page 17: 5talents Magazine October 2013

kingdom work. And as you give, our Lord God will bless you and make you a blessing.

Bible promises that as we give, the Lord will bless us according to His riches in glory (And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19). As we obey the Lord in giving, He will bless us by revealing more of Himself, giving us peace, good health, wisdom, increase in finance, deliverance, open the closed doors, breakdown every barriers in our lives, breakthrough in prayer life, friendship and fellowship with everyone, and many more.

Dear brethren, God has promised us that He will bless us to be a blessing. (I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. Genesis 12:2). By the grace of God, let us start giving and the Lord will bless us and make us a blessing. Give with a cheerful heart, for the Lord loves a cheerfulgiver (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. (2 Corinthians 13:14)

For the LORD your God will bless you just as He promised you; you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you. (Deuteronomy 15:6) blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Genesis 22:17,18)

He who gives to the poor will not lack, But he who hides his eyes will have many curses. (Proverbs 28:27)
