According t o i ts builder, @ace Technology Laboratories, Inc,,
Los Angeles, there are over 100,000 separate ccrmponents contained i n NASA's
Explorer VI now circling the earth.
This includes everything frcnn condensers t o clamps, Most of the
parts are carmnercially available with a relatively small nmber hand-crafted
for specific uses
A large variety of metals and plast ics was also used i n
constructing the payload, representing half of a l l the elements shown on
the physicist 's table of elements,
Among metals used are l i thium and magnesium and rare earths.
Plastics, including Epoxy resins, which because of toughness and ab i l i ty
insure moisture protection, supplied coatings of glue on small resistors
and capacitors.
Another plast ic used i s Teflon, because of i t s quali t ies as a
superior dialectric and as an excellent high temperature insulator. The
l a t t e r was developed expressly for use i n miniaturized equipment.
