On September 5-6th, Jeannine and I were fortunate to stay with friends on Crystal Lake to observe the E Scow Nationals. This was the first time that the Nationals have been held on Crystal Lake so was a once-in-a-lifetime event. We had access to a pontoon boat so were able to follow closely the 6 races over 2 days.

First, the E Class scow is a 28’ racing sailboat designed solely for competition. It does not have a centerboard, has 2 rather small rudders in event that the boat heels and lifts 1 rudder out of the water. Crews ranged from a minimum of 3 up to 5; you can see pictures of scows under-way . . . . [below]

The race course was up to a windward mark, then a spinnaker run back to the starting mark, then a repeat without any reach. This required that the crew dowse their spinnaker at the downwind mark, turn, and beat back to windward. The result was considerable shouting over right-of-away and occasional crashing of fiberglass as they turned the downwind mark. See the mark in the picture. [cover photo]

A novel feature is that the 2 races were sailed back-to-back so how will the crew get lunch? Each had ordered lunch in advance, then a supply boat pulled alongside to cater each and hand over what each had ordered. You can see a picture of the caterer at work. Jeannine and I attended the skipper’s meeting as “visiting commanders,” also had a VHF transceiver so were

able to closely follow the events. Bob Buchanan

National Secretary for 2014 and 2015, V/C Peter Mitchelson, SN is a charter

member of Sebastian Inlet Sail & Power Squad-ron, situated in South East Florida. He joined neighboring Vero Beach Power Squadron in December 1994 after relocating to the USA from the UK. He was immediately put to work as District 8’s Computer Systems Chair. Over the next few years he was squadron Friday Night so-cial chairman (Vero Beach hold weekly socials), newsletter editor and Squadron Educational Officer.

In 1999, while serving as SEO, he was elected assistant chair of the Operations Manual Committee. He served as chair for 2001 – 2003 before moving over to helm the Educational Department Publications Support Committee during 2004 and 2005. During this time he assisted with the foundation and chartering of the Sebastian Inlet squadron and became their first Commander at a weekend celebration which was attended by the Operating Committee.

The next two years saw Peter move up the District 8 Bridge, becoming District Commander in 2007. He is a long time member of several national committees, most notably Infor-mation Technology and National Meetings; served as Aide to Chief Commanders Marshburn, Maynard, Dvorak and Alter, and most recently served as a member of the Committee on Nominations before accepting the position of Assistant National Secretary in 2011.

When work intrudes into power squadron life, Peter provides computer support and assistance to a wide range of customers, including a number of charities. On occasions, he is also been known to provide musical entertainment at squadron and other charitable events.

As I write this, we’re only a few weeks from our Spring Conference, and I hope you have made plans to join us for what promises to be a terrific weekend. Spring Conference also means it’s time for our annual Change of Watch, as the current District Bridge ends its term of office and the new Bridge is sworn in. It’s been a whirlwind adventure for me to serve as your District Commander, and I have enjoyed every minute. I know, however, that the work of United States Power Squadrons can’t be done without the hard work of so many district committee members and squadron commanders and their staff. Over the past year I have gained a new appreciation for your efforts, and how your knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm work together to keep United States Power Squadrons strong in Michigan and northern Indiana. Most of all, I have learned anew how much fun a dedicated group of boating enthusiasts can have while serving the boating community and making the waterways safer for us all. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your dedication, your hard work and your great spirits.

United States Power Squadrons® has entered its second century; Detroit Power Squadron is working on its own 100th Anniversary Celebration, District 9 has been around for 75 years now, and many of our squadrons are in the second half of a century of service. But times have changed, and if we are to continue to be the premier boating education organization, we must continue to change as well. The impact of social media and instantaneous communication means that the way we communicate and teach will have to change. On the national front, we have developed several on-line courses, and more are on their way. Our new national website is designed to be more user-friendly, and sports a new look and feel that should be more appealing to a younger generation. We are moving slowly into Twitter and Facebook, and trying to take better advantage of the way more people communicate today.

It’s a hard transition, but one that is important to our maintaining our leadership. District 9 has begun using GoToMeeting for video conferences, and more committees will have access for face to face communication without the time and expense of travel. We’re experimenting at Spring Conference with presenting our seminar on Social Media via teleconference. Our presenter will be in Atlanta, with a live feed to Shanty Creek. If our squadrons are going to survive, we need to embrace these changes and find ways to make them work for us. Change is not the enemy. Hanging on to ways that no longer work is where the danger lies.

As my term as District Commander ends and your next District Commander takes the helm, I’m confident that we will continue to have a vision that will weather the winds of change. It’s an exciting time to be a part of America’s largest and best boating education organization, and I look forward to helping to shape its future. So let’s sail on together as we continue the voyage. It’s a great time to be a part of United States Power Squadrons.

We got the idea for a life jacket wearing mascot when another squadron put a PFD on a bear and brought it to D9 Hospitality night a few years back. Gary found our pup at a Salvation Army store. He was in great shape with no wear and tear.

Next, I asked one of our local marine supply stores, Gull Lake Marine, if they would con-sider donating a doggie PFD, with the promise that we would display him at Vessel Safety Checks, parades and other civic events in the hopes of getting people to think about putting their pet in a life jacket,

as well as their children. Skipper is a great draw at events. He gets people to come to our booth and gets them asking questions.

Skipper has been to the Family Fish Fair in Portage, to VSC day at Gull Lake and at “Boats, Brats and Vessel Safety Check” day in South Haven every year since he adopted us. This past year he rode the float in the Kalamazoo Memorial Day parade and the USPS-Captain’s Liberty Boat in the Grand Haven US Coast Guard Festival parade.

Skipper has a hard time saying which is his favorite event. He likes it when kids and parents try to figure out if he is real. We let Skipper stay in the car over-night before the Coast Guard parade—the gentleman who pulled in and parked next to us after midnight, told us it took him a few minutes to figure out the

Rottweiler wasn’t real. Lyn Bleyer

As I’m writing this report, it is 60 degrees here in Lansing-not long now until boating season starts! An important part of our boating season includes vessel safety checks. Squadrons should have received their 2015 decals already.

National sent out 110% of the number of VSCs passed during the previous year to each squad-ron. Squadrons are expected to enter VSC reports on a monthly basis. Additional decals may be available (as long as they last) if squadron numbers increase or if they can convince Nation-al that they need more. We can also get more decals initially if our passage rate increases.

Our D/9 Vessel Safety Examiners did a great job last year. They conducted 2,068 VSEs, with 161 Examiners. The passage rate was 87%. Even though we have a very short season, only 3 other Districts conducted more VSEs than D/9. Congratulations to all of you!

National Boating Safety Week is quickly approaching- 16-22 May 2015. There are a couple of websites that have free resources. You can get free stickers, brochures, posters, etc. from the National Safe Boating Council at www.boatingorders.com Additionally, you can go to their “Wear It!” website for other resources including press releases, the 2015 Press Kit and PSA’s. They can also provide your squadron with a custom Wear It! logo. Go to www.safeboatingcampaign.com

The Detroit Boat Show was held 14-22 Feb 2015 and went off without a hitch, thanks to D/Lt Bob Krieg, Sr., AP our Boat Show Committee Chair. A whopping 64 volunteers from a variety of squadrons staffed our booth! Kudos to Bob and all of the volun-teers. Boat shows are a great chance to let the general public know about our programs and classes and give us a chance to talk with interested students and potential members.

Under PR/Marketing news, National has rolled out a new brand-ing manual which is meant to help the public recognize the United States Power Squadrons®. According to the Manual, the national logo should always be the prominent brand – brochures, apparel, signage, newsletters, business cards, websites, etc. The Manual offers a few other suggestions for consideration:

“Let’s reduce or completely drop “safety” from our language. Safety doesn’t sell. We teach boating skills, which increases confidence on the water = safety. We may be the oldest organization that teaches boating classes and seminars, but that is not impressive. What is impressive… we offer superior boating education.

Use the approved tagline only… Come for the Boating Education…Stay for the Friends℠

Use the SM – Service Mark after the tagline. It should always be Calibri Italics, in a smaller size than the national name. Always below the national name. Websites will use Arial Italics rather than Calibri Italics.

If you haven’t seen the Manual yet, you can find it in the Executive Department section on the United States

Power Squadrons ® website.

National has also rolled out its new website. It is similar to the previous site. You will need to sign in to get to the site index and other pertinent information.

Finally, reminders regarding upcoming events:

Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival is coming up the Friday, 31 July and Saturday, 1 August. D/9 hosts a picnic on Friday which will be held at the Great Lakes Marina in Muskegon. Details to follow. D/9 members also walk in the parade on Saturday. It is a huge parade, held in downtown Grand Haven, drawing thousands of people to the area. Make your hotel reservations now as rooms sell out quickly. It’s lots of fun and I hope to see you there.

United States Power Squadrons® Governing Board is taking place 25-30 August, 2015. It is being held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, CA. You can find registration information on the United States Power Squadrons® website.

Thanks

Thanks to all my committee members for their hard work this past year. I also would like to thank Commanders and Members of the Birmingham Power Squadron, South Bend Sail and Power Squadron, Tip of the Mitt Sail and Power Squadron and the Wyandotte Power Squadron for the warm welcomes and hospitality shown to me at their Changes of Watch ceremonies.

Ahoy All,

As I finish up my third and final year as your District Educational Officer, I can look back on the challenges and triumphs of this journey.

Back in 2008, I was looking for a new challenge, so I asked then DEO, Bill Stewart, “How I can I get your Job”? Well, a whirlwind finish of the Junior Navigation, Navigation and Weather courses, a year as Squadron Commander, three years as the Assistant District Educational Officer and three years as the District Educational Officer and I find myself again looking for a new challenge. Where I will go from here, only time will tell, but this journey has been a very rewarding one. I will miss being on the district bridge. Among other perks, you get to sit up front and go to the front of the food line. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your District Educational Officer. I will miss the camaraderie of my fellow officers and the chance to meet other squadron, district, and national officers. But, more than anything, I will miss the satisfaction of doing an important job and making a difference.

I would like to thank all of the Education Department Chairmen and committee people who worked with, and helped me during my time on the district bridge. I would especially like to thank D/1st/Lt Tom Smith, JN, my Assistant District Educational Officer this last year. I am leaving this post in competent hands and I know that Tom will do a great job. I hope all of you who served under me will continue to serve under and support Tom.

To all of the squadrons that taught an ABC class, advanced grade or elective course, or a USPS University seminar under my watch, thank you. Thank you for your dedication to the United States Power Squadrons goals and for all your hard work. Please keep up the dedication and hard work in the years to come. We do make a difference.

Respectfully submitted,

Spring 2015 Interlaker Page 15

I am writing this report as the first really warm days of March have arrived. Spring is my favorite time of the year. It is a time of phenomenal renewal. The earth awakens from her slumber, and explodes with new life. In our own lives, Spring can be symbolic of starting new projects, sewing new seeds, and coming forth with new ideas. As I think about when I will get my boat in the water, I also think about the new marina neighbors that I will meet this year and the renewal of friendships with boating neighbors that have been dormant over the winter. Fortunately, my friendship with boaters who are United States Power Squadron members never goes dormant over the winter. We are having fun together at Dis-trict and Squadron events.

Our challenge as an organization is to attract new members and retain both the new and current members. District 9 membership shrunk by 4% from February 2014 to February 2015. National, membership dropped by 5% during the same period. Obviously, the initial thought is that our educational programs will bring us new member candi-dates. However, that somehow does not seem to be enough these days. We need to use multiple strategies to attract and retain members besides education. Here are some strategies published in the USPS Blast Newsletter over the past year:

1. Find Cyber members a home. Nearly every squadron has a few cyber members living in their area. If you follow this link http://www.usps.org/php/DHinders/unattached/makeMatchx.php, you can search for the cyber members near you. The search results will provide a list of unattached members, cyber members, and USPS University students. Add them to your email contact lists and include them when you promote courses and squadron activities.

2. How do I become a member? We should be prepared to answer this question at every squadron event, class and meeting. How quickly can you point a prospective member to the USPS website that answers that question? One way to do that in your class brochures or event posters would be to incorporate a QR (Quick Response) bar code. QR codes direct readers to any website or online page that describes your event and typically provides additional content. Anyone using a smartphone can read a QR code. So the next time someone asks "How do I become a member?" provide a QR code that points them to the national web-site http://www.usps.org/index.html/index.php/join-usps. The Internet is loaded with free QR Code gener-ators. Be creative and use QR codes liberally. Checkout Wikipedia to learn more about QR Codes.

3. Look for something that a new member can do for the Squadron. Get new members involved. Ask them to assist with the history of the squadron or take pictures. Working on documenting the activities of the squadron is a good way to get new member to become aware of the projects and events, as well as learning the names of the members. Friendships develop by this activity as well as working on a fundraiser or some social event will cause them to stay involved.

4. Make member benefits work for your Squadron. Member Benefits are available to help attract and retain members. Did you know that you can cut and paste the logos and descriptions from the Member Benefits website for use in your newsletter and email communications? Why not highlight a different benefit each month? Are you mailing Member Benefit brochures to your members who aren’t attending events? Some members don’t have or use computers but are interested in the benefits. Why not mail them a bro-chure with the member benefits chairman’s contact information, so they can take advantage of the benefits.

5. Have a reunion with all who have taken a USPS class from your Squadron. Make it a casual social event on the water, at a park or at the beach. Have everyone bring a dish to share and suitable beverages; no reservations necessary. Have a guest register at the event, so you can get everyone’s name & contact information. Recruit and retain, but most of all celebrate USPS members both past and present.

I have enjoyed my year as District Administrative Officer. I had the chance to attend many Changes of Watch and Commander Balls. I had the privilege of attending the Change of Watch as the District Representative and administer the Oath of Office for the Kalamazoo, Muskegon and Saginaw Bay Squadrons. I also had the privilege to attend the Grosse Pointe Power Squadron as the District Repre-sentative. I would like to thank these Squadrons for their warm welcome, and their friendship.

I would also like to thank the members of the District 9 Administrative Department for their outstanding service and support. It was an honor and pleasure to work with them. They made my job easier

The Fall 2014 D9 Conference is long behind me and of course the Spring Conference 2015 is fast approaching which also means that spring, summer and warmer weather are on their way too. I hope! I think the break form boating makes us appreciate it more when it returns and of course all the snow and ice means higher water. Yeah that’s it… We’ll go with that.

Once again I am happy to report all is well in the District 9 Secretary’s department. How is your squadron’s Secretary Department doing? At the Spring 2015 D9 Conference at Shanty Creek we will be having separate officer seminars so If you have any questions or a topic you would like discussed please let me know in advance so that I can be prepared to answer your questions. DB2000 problems anyone? Email me at [email protected].

Once again I must give credit where it is due. I would not be able to get things ready for conference if it were not for the continued work of P/C Peggy Schwaller, AP (Birmingham) and the fantastic job she does to get the “Interlaker” not only done but done well. Thanks to her, D9 won the 2014 Distinctive Communicator Award for our District Newsletter.

The other District 9 Newsletter editors out there deserve a “Great Job” and “Thank You” as well. It’s a tough job as I know since I was the Grosse Pointe “Tars and Tripe” editor for a few years. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. P/C Sue Rayburn, SN (Dearborn) is the D9 reporter for the District for The Ensign. She reviews the District 9 news-letters and activities such as cruises, rendezvous’, educational efforts and other activities of national interest. She forwards the articles and photos for consideration in the “The Ensign”.

I would also like to recognize Lt/C Joanne VanAmeyden, P (Sable Point) for continuing to perform the duties as Dis-trict 9 Historian. All 3 of these wonderful ladies find time to fit in their district activities in addition to the time they put in as squadron officers.

The District 9 website remains a work in progress but of course as far as users are concerned it’s functional and up to date thanks to D/C Jay Stevens, SN (South Bend). We’ve had meetings with a developer and National has some plans and promises of their own as they go through a redesign of their website. We’ll see where we end up but in the meantime all you need to know can be found at www.d9-usps.org. Be sure to check the calendar for events around the district and submit you squadron’s activities that may be of interest to others

Here we are just about ready to start another year of boating!!! This is a great time to start out fresh. Consider how you - the individual - can con-nect with fellow boaters who are possible future members. Remember, together we can all learn to be better boat-ers and we can have lots of fun on the way! There is a definite friendliness and bond between boaters. One of the great aspects of boating is developing new friendships. Meeting people who have the same passion as you creates lasting friendships. See you at Spring Conference at Shanty Creek!!!!

Thanks to my Treasurer’s Department help and support – John Bennett and Laddie Hudson – for handling the Treasurer’s seminar.

I am pleased to report that as of 28 February 2015, all monies received have been deposited and all bills have been paid. D/9 is solvent and maintains positive checking and money market account balances.

FYI, I have read that the St. Clair River has more freighter traffic than the Panama and Suez Canals combined. Both, ocean going freighters and lake freighters traverse the river. There is generally not too much commercial traffic on the North Channel (behind our home), mostly recreational. There are occasionally barges and pile drivers that come through.

The ice breaking on the North Channel is very controversial since it puts our ferry out of commission for an undetermined amount of time. Our ferry is heavily used with commerce, school buses, commuters going to and from work, utilities and the like. Should be interesting.
