The Jabsco 55 Series represents a radicalchange in the development of positive dis-placement lobe pumps for the pharmaceuticaland food industries. The pumps have beendesigned to offer the very highest standardsof CIP (clean-in-place), SIP (steam sterilize-in-place) and Aseptic Operation (resistance toingress of bacteria through joints). All theareas found in traditional pump designswhich make them difficult to clean andsterilize have been totally eliminated, forexample:-

Front Mounted Shaft Seals eliminate crevices, yet can be inspected and serviced without strip-ping the pump head.

External Rotor Fixing ensures that there are nonuts, bolts, screws or splines in fluid contact, yet the rotors can be removed after removingonly the end cover.

Hygienic End Cover means that there are norecesses or holes to trap contaminants.

Gasket-type Joints which do not harbor bac-teria are used in place of O-rings in all fluidcontact areas.

This combination of features, never previouslyavailable in a lobe pump, makes the Jabsco 55Series the perfect pump for delicate, viscousand particle-laden fluids in Biotechnology,Pharmaceutical manufacture, high technologyFood Processes and all applications where thevery highest hygiene standards are required.

The philosophy behind the Jabsco 55 Seriespump is to provide the user with realbenefits which can be seen to improve theeffectiveness of his process and reduce hisoperating costs by significant and measurableamounts. All users will appreciate some ifnot all of the following:

CLEAN IN PLACE: To claim that the pump is“ C I P-able” may not seem to be a majoradvancement in hygienic pumps, as this hasbeen claimed by many manufacturers before. But, CIP means different things to differentprocessors. To some people, it may mean thatmost product is washed away and that thepump is visually clean or only small traces ofproduct are still apparent. But in the case of the55 Series, CIP means absolutely 100% microbi-ologically clean without the need to dismantlethe pump.

Operators appreciate the reduction in thedown-time, reduced costs, and minimum riskof product loss through contamination. Plantmaintenance costs are also reduced as there ismuch lower risk of damage to the pump.

The main criteria for obtaining this high level ofcleanability is AVOIDANCE OF CREVICES. This isachieved in this pump by using speciallydeveloped gasket joints and seals, externalrotor retainers and a flat end cover to give atotally crevice free design allowing the pump tobe easily, quickly and 100% reliably cleaned inplace to the very highest standards.

STERILIZE IN PLACE: Sometimes referred toas “steaming through” or “steaming-in-place”.In truly sterile processes, all product-contactcomponents need to be sterilized.

User Benefits

Page 2: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

This is usually achieved by heating to hightemperature (up to 140°C, 285°F) to killorganisms still remaining on the surface of theequipment. In other pump types, this isachieved by physically dismantling the pumpand autoclaving the parts, bagging, takingback to the pump and re-assembling; a long, costly process which causes problems topersonnel and can result in accidental damageto components. But when using the 55 Series itis possible to pass steam through the completeassembled system to sterilize the internal sur-faces without dismantling the pump.

To achieve 100% sterility, it is important tosteam through for a period long enough for thecoldest part of the system to reach the correcttemperature and hold for the time periodrequired to kill off the organisms. The 55 Seriespump head is designed to completely self-drain, ensuring all surfaces are exposed tosteam and the component shape and choice ofmaterials ensures thermal stability and temper-ature tolerance. Also, a pre-requisite for a pumpwhich can be successfully SIP’d is one that canbe CIP’d. Any product remaining after cleaningcould insulate that area from the temperaturethus allowing some organisms to survive andso contaminate any subsequent product beingprocessed.

ASEPTIC OPERATION: An aseptic process isone in which all unwanted micro-organisms arekept out of the fluid stream. This presents spoil-ing of sensitive products and ensures that onlythe intended reactions take place in theprocess.

In the 55 Series design, high specification jointsare used instead if O-rings ensuring that micro-bial contaminants cannot enter the productzone. Once the system has been cleaned andsterilized it will remain clean and sterile.

For increased security, secondary “aseptic”joints can be fitted to all potential entry pointsto allow steam or sterile fluid barriers to beconnected.

Also, a pump which is externally dirty on theoutside will harbor colonies of bacteria whichare more likely to infect the internal surfaces ofthe pump. All 55 Series pumps are designed tobe easy to clean externally and are less likely tocause product contamination.

HIGH CONTAINMENT : Escape of pathogenic orotherwise hazardous products is prevented bythe specially developed pump head joints, together with the optionally available steam orsterile fluid barriers.

HIGH HYGIENE: Use of US FDA listed materialsmaintains hygiene inside and smooth con-toured externals makes the outside of thepump very easy to clean.

LOW PRODUCT DAMAGE: This is an inherentbenefit of the rotary lobe pumping action butthe Jabsco rotor shapes have been designed toensure that the integrity of product structure, both microbial and particulate, is maintained.

NO HOLD UP OF PRODUCT : The modifiedrotor bores and vertical ports allow the pumphead to completely self-drain, ensuring thatexpensive product is not retained in the system, that cleaning and sterilization is complete andthat there is no cross-contamination betweenproduct batches.

NO CONT A M I N AT I O N : Contamination ofproduct by foreign particles, especially thoseproducts intended for direct injection into ananimal or human, is to be avoided at all costs.

Injectable products are made mostly of water(WFI), with the addition of the particular activeproduct. The purity of the product can becompromised by the shedding (removal) ofparticles from equipment surfaces. Contactbetween components of the 55 Series pumpsduring operation is avoided by use of highstrength shafts, wide gears, dual lubricationsystem and optional hard faced seals, prevent-ing shedding of particles into the fluid stream.

HIGH CORROSION RESISTANCE: Low-carbonaustenitic stainless (316L) is used to resist carbideprecipitation at welds and to resist attack froma wide range of chemicals. This material is alsoessential when the pump is to handle dem-ineralized water of the type used for water ofinjection (WFI). Demineralized water is waterthat has had all its trace minerals removed andtherefore has many open chemicals bondswhich are trying to attach to free minerals suchas carbon. High-carbon-content stainless-steelsare susceptible to carbon “pull-out” i.e. carbonpresent at the surface of the metal of the pumpwill be pulled out and will cause re-mineraliza-tion of the water which is undesirable. A lowcarbon steel is not affected in this way.

SOLIDS HANDLING ABILITY : Again, an inherentfeature of rotary lobe pumps is made especiallyeffective by the Jabsco rotor shape and large portdiameters used.

METERING AND DOSING ABILITY: The smooth, pulsation free nature of the rotor design meansthat medium to high viscosity products (over500 cp) can be accurately metered by control-ling the pump speed.

REDUCED DOWNTIME: Jabsco 55 Seriespumps are fitted with high strength shafts, wide gears, high quality seals and a duallubrication system. Separate oil lubrication ofgears and grease lubrication of bearingsensures that bearings cannot become worn byparticles shed from the gears.

EASY MAINTENANCE: Despite this remarkablelist of features, 55 Series pumps are very easy tomaintain. The external rotor retainers and singlekey rotor drive allow easy removal and refitmentof rotors. Front loaded seals allow access forreplacement of joints or faces without discon-necting the pipe system and simple shimmingfor shaft and rotor synchronization, easilyaccessible gears and single key drive mean thatsemi-skilled labor can maintain the pump.

The Jabsco 55 Series is a range of positivedisplacement rotary lobe pumps designedto pump delicate, viscous and particle-ladenfluids as well as thin liquids which requirean all stainless steel pump made to thevery highest standards of hygiene andcleanability .

The 55 Series pump has two rotors which turnin opposite directions. Fluid enters the pumpfrom the inlet port and fills the space betweenthe rotors. This fluid is carried around theoutside of the rotors and is forced out of thedischarge port as the rotor lobes mesh together– see Fig 5.1.

The design of the Jabsco 55 Series pumps isinfluenced by some fundamental engineeringprinciples and it is useful to understand these toensure its most effective selection and operation.

In the Jabsco 55 Series pump, each rotor issupported on its own shaft and there are nobearings inside the pump chamber, so all forcesfrom the fluid pressure are transmitted throughthe shafts to external bearings. The rotors aretherefore overhung, as the shafts are canti-levered (see Fig 5.2) and are designed to resistthe fluid pressure without excessive bending. The bearings are permanently lubricated andare sealed from the pump head ensuring that:

• No lubricant contaminates the pumpedfluid.

• No bearing material is worn away.• No pumped fluid (which may be corrosive

or abrasive) can enter the bearings.• No pumped fluid is trapped behind the

bearings from where it cannot be cleanedout.

When the pump is running within its operatinglimits, the rotors never touch each other andnever touch the case in which they rotate. Fig5.3 shows the areas where small clearances areprovided: between the two rotors (a), at thetips of the rotors (b) and on the front and rearfaces (c). These clearances are typically only0.05 to 0.25mm (0.002 to 0.010 inches). Thisabsence of contact ensures that no materialcontaminates the pumped fluid and also makes55 Series pumps ideal for abrasive fluids.

Rotor Clearances

Page 6: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

Meshing clearance between the rotors ismaintained by the use of separate “timing”gears, which exactly synchronize the rotation ofthe two shafts. This ensures that the pumphead components are not easily worn, unlikefor example gear pumps where one gear drivesthe other and can wear, resulting in a loss ofefficiency.

The clearances within the pump head must belarge enough to allow for shaft deflectionunder pressure and for thermal expansionwithout rotor contact but must also be kept assmall as possible to maintain pump efficiency.Volumetric efficiency is lost when a liquid“slips” from the discharge side back to the inletside through the rotor clearances. The amountof slip is affected by the size of the clearances, the differential pressure generated by thepump and the fluid viscosity:

Larger clearances result in higher slip; the fluidcan more easily leak back through the largerarea (Fig 5.4).

Higher pressure results in higher slip; thepressure forces more liquid back through theclearances (Fig 5.5).

Fig 5.3

Fig 5.4

Fig 5.5

Volumetric Efficiency

Page 7: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

Higher fluid viscosity results in lower slip;high-viscosity liquids flow less easily throughthe pump head clearances than thin liquids(Fig 5.6).

Therefore, especially when pumping thinliquids, rotor clearances are kept as small aspossible to maintain efficiency. However, higherpressures force the rotors sideways within therotor case, towards the inlet port, also slightlytilting the rotors. Therefore for higherpressures, more clearance is necessary toprevent rotor to rotor case contact, up to amaximum allowable for a particular shaft androtor configuration.

L a s t l y, high operating temperatures and, especially, sudden changes in temperature e.g.during CIP, result in different rates of expansionof the pump head components. Thereforesufficient clearance must be provided to allowfor this.

55 Series pump rotor cases and end-covers arefully machined all over to precision tolerancesand the rotor case is rigidly located on thebearing housing by dowels to maintain correctrotor clearances. The rotor bores have astraight-sided bore shape to allow low-viscosityliquids and cleaning solutions to self- d r a i nwhen the pump is side-mounted (plumbingaxis vertical). This ensures that expensiveproduct is not retained in the system, thatcleaning and sterilization is improved and thatthere is minimal cross-contamination betweenproduct batches. - Fig. 1

55 Series liquid contact parts, Pump casing, cover and rotors are manufactured from lowcarbon grade of autenitic stainless-steel,generally referred to by the US designation316L (European designation 1.4404). Theprecise composition of the materials are asfollows:

This grade of stainless steel has less than 0.03%carbon and there are two reasons for using thisgrade:• Low carbon “pull-out” (see section 5 of

technical manual• Higher corrosion resistance

Nearest equivalent grades to other nationalstandards are:• USA AISI 316L • Germany Werkstoff 1.4404• Japan JIS SUS316L• Din X2CrBiMo 17 13 2• Sweden SIS 2353• France Afnor Z2CND 17-12

High corrosion resistance: When 316 gradestainless steel is welded, the heat can causelocalized precipitation of carbides in the steel. These areas of high carbide concentration aresusceptible to chemical attack. Low carbongrade steel does not generate these localizedweak areas.

Low carbon pull-out: Low-carbon austeniticstainless steel (316L) is required to handledemineralized water of the type used for waterfor injection (WFI). Demineralized water iswater that has had all trace minerals removedand therefore has many open chemical bondswhich are trying to attach to free minerals suchas carbon. High-carbon-content stainless-steelsare susceptible to carbon “pull-out” i.e. carbonpresent at the surface of the metal of the pumpwill be pulled out and will cause re-mineralization of the water which isundesirable. A low carbon steel is not affectedin this way.

55 Series pumps are designed with smoothexternal contours which will freely drain ofwash down solutions and which have minimalareas for dust and dirt collection. Bearinghousing assemblies are either cast iron oroptionally stainless steel.

CAST IRON - The bearing carrier and gearhousing are manufactured from cast iron toBS1452 grade 220 and coated with a high-grade epoxy-polyester coating. This coating isapplied by an electrostatic powder process andgives good adhesion, excellent protection andan attractive, easy to clean surface.

STAINLESS STEEL - 55 Series pumps are alsoavailable with an all-stainless steel bearingcarrier and gear housing. These are manufac-tured from 304 grade stainless steel.

55 Series pumps are fitted with large-diameterhigh strength shafts. There is no shimmingadjustment required for gears and bearingsand the wide timing gears are easily accessibleso that semi-skilled labor can maintain thepump.

55 Series pumps have an adaptable foot/gearcover and can be adapted to three mounting

options:

• Horizontal pipe orientation, high drive shaftposition - Fig. 2

• Horizontal pipe orientation, low drive shaftposition - Fig. 3

• Vertical pipe orientation - Fig. 4

To change any pump from vertical to horizontalplumbing or vice versa, or to convert a pumpfrom high shaft to low shaft, it is necessary onlyto remove the 4 screws holding the gear coverin place, interchange the lip seal and blankingplug and assemble in the desired position. Nonew parts are required.

55 Series pumps are available with twotypes of rotors: a 5-lobe type and scimitartype developed especially for the 55 SeriesUltra-Hygienic pumps.

5-lobe rotors give a combination of gentlehandling of viscous and shear sensitive liquidsplus the ability to pass small soft solids withminimal damage. When used in a straight-sided self-draining rotor case shape they givegood volumetric efficiency, exceptionallysmooth flow and low noise even whenpumping thin liquids.

Scimitar rotors , also known as “2-wing” or“hammer-head” rotors are designed to achievevery high efficiencies on thin liquids and willalso handle viscous liquids with minimal shear.

Jabsco 55 Series pumps are designed to havenon-contacting pumping elements, i.e. nocontact between the rotors and the casing orcover, or rotor to rotor. The large diameterrigid pump shafts ensure minimal flexing andtherefore minimal possibility of any contactwhich could cause particles to be depositedinto the product or roughening of the surfacewhich could compromise cleaning. In pumpsfitted with Scimitar rotors, the shafts do notneed to be timed.

Another feature of the 55 Series pumps is theway in which the rotors are held on their shafts.Other pump types often use rotor nuts or boltsto retain the rotor on the shaft. These usuallyresult in recesses in the rotor or end cover andthey require sealing to avoid product gettinginto the drive of the rotor, either spline orkeyway. This in turn also requires 4 more jointswithin the product zone so creates 4 moreareas for potential product entrapment. The55 Series pumps have eliminated the rotorretainer from the product zone altogether.

Rotors are available with up to 3 sets ofclearances:

All rotors are made from 316L Stainless Steel(1.4401) except the 55210 pump where thecode 8 scimitar rotors are manufactured fromhigh-nickel non-galling alloy to further improvethe reliability of the pump due to the very smallclearances. (Galling is where two stainless-steelsurfaces rub together and locally cold-weldcausing roughening of the surface, pitting andpossible pump seizure). Should a small hardparticle pass through the pump the rotors willnot gall or seize, although some scratching orscoring may occur in extreme cases.

This high nickel non-galling alloy used on the55210 code 8 rotor is to US specification ASTMA494 SY5SnBiM and its composition is detailedin the table opposite.

This material used is not suitable for electro-polishing so 55210 size pumps with code 8scimitar rotors ordered as electropolished (codeY) will be supplied with only the rotor case andend cover electropolished. The 55210 sizepumps with scimitar rotors ordered as polished(code Z) will be supplied with the rotorspolished and not electropolished and the rotorcase and end cover polished and electro-polished.

Within any one pump size, all rotors are directlyinterchangeable. At any time, replacementrotors of the same or any other type orclearances can be fitted but, it is advisable tocheck the end clearances and the timing andadjust if necessary, especially if fitting 5-loberotors to a pump previously fitted with scimitarrotors. Refer to Installation, Operating andMaintenance Manual.

If a pump build specification is changed at anytime, the model number should be changed onthe pump nameplate to ensure that correctspare parts will be ordered.

Spare rotors are supplied in boxed pairs.

Page 15: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

55 Series pumps are fitted with high qualitymechanical shaft seals to prevent leakage ofproduct from the pump into the atmosphereand to prevent contamination by airbornemicro-organisms. All pumps are available withsingle face seals - Fig. 1, and with flushed ordouble seals as an option; see separate datasheets. This seal design is unique to Jabsco andhas a number of features which are of majorbenefit to the user:

• Hydraulically pressure-balanced.• Crevice-free for highest standards of CIP

and SIP capability.• Fully self-draining.• Withstands SIP temperatures and thermal

shock.• Solid faces, no metal parts in fluid contact.• No moving parts or springs in fluid contact.• Fitting length pre-set.• Front-loading: seal can be inspected/

serviced without removing rotor case.• Fully interchangeable parts.• Simple spare parts ordering.

The seal faces are of a balanced design so thatthe contact pressure between the faces iscontrolled. This gives excellent sealing even atvery low pressures as well as long life at highpressures. Also, the Jabsco pump seal isspecially developed to fully expose the sealingfaces and the joints around the seal to thefluid. This ensures good circulation of productto avoid stagnant areas where bacteria canmultiply, see Fig. 2 below, good cooling of theseal faces and maximum flow of cleaning fluidsaround the seal. (Other pump types have theseal mounted in a cavity in the rear of thepump which is not easily cleaned due to itsinaccessibility). This design also ensures that, when the pump is stopped, fluid can drainfrom the seal area.

55 Series Lobe Pumps

The 55 Series pump seals do not use O-ringsanywhere in product contact (except certainelastomer options - see Elastomers data sheet)Fig. 3 shows the specially developed jointaround the rotating seal face. The rotating seatis fitted directly into the back of the rotor toeliminate crevices and the ‘L’- section seal cup isslightly flared at its edges “a”.

The stationary seat is sealed directly to therotor case by a ring with a modified squarecross-section (except certain elastomer options- see Elastomers data sheet). Both these jointsare, in effect, types of gasket. But whereas aflat gasket could allow some penetration ofproduct at its edges when pressurized, thesejoints prevent this due to the higher contactforce where they interface with the productzone. It can be seen quite clearly that thesejoints are far less likely to harbor bacteria thanconventional joints.

Single seals are available in two face materialcombinations:

Carbon on Silicon-Carbide code 3Silicon-carbide on Silicon-Carbide code 2

The code 3 single carbon on Silicon-Carbideseal is suitable for many clean fluids which donot require a more sophisticated seal type i.e.those which:

• Are non-toxic and non hazardous• Have some lubricating properties• Are not highly abrasive• Have a viscosity less than 150,000 cp• Do not require steam or sterile fluid (aseptic)

b a r r i e r• Do not change state in contact with air i.e.

do not, form a film, dry out or precipitatesolids

• Are pumped at a temperature less than 80°C(70°F)

• Are not excessively temperature sensitive (donot degrade when heated by the friction of theseal faces)

The code 2 single Silicon-carbide on Silicon-carbide seal is used where carbon is notacceptable in fluid contact or where face wearwould be unacceptable, i.e.

• For abrasive fluids containing crystals, powders or particles which would rapidlywear away the carbon of the standard seal.

• Where shedding of particles into the fluidstream must be avoided. The seal faces arethe only area in the pump design whererubbing contact is unavoidable. Siliconcarbide is extremely hard (only boroncarbide and diamond are harder), so the sealdoes not wear ie, particles are NOT shed intothe product.

• For pure water.

Refer to Pump Selection data sheet for moreinformation on seal selection.

Code 2 silicon carbide-on-silicon carbideseals are not recommended for steam-purged applications as the seal faces canbind together - see Cleaning and Sterilizingdata sheet.

Materials and Applications

Page 17: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

Pumps fitted with single seals require nospecial installation but pumps must never berun completely dry for more than 30 seconds asthis will cause excessive heating of the sealfaces. Use flushed seals in pumps that need torun dry. For seal installation and repair, refer toInstallation, Operation and Maintenancemanual.

Pumps built with single seals can be convertedas follows:

• To other face materials e.g. from code 3 tocode 2, simply by changing seal faces.

• To other elastomer materials. See Elastomersdata sheet.

• To double or flushed seals. See appropriatedata sheet. Conversion kits are availablewhich contain all the parts necessary toconvert a single-seal pump to flushed ordouble seals.

Refer to Installation, Operating and Mainte-nance Manual for instructions on seal removaland fitting.

If a pump build specification is changed at anytime, the model number must be changed onthe pump name plate to ensure that correctspare parts will be ordered.

Single seal spare parts are supplied as:• Primary seal face kits - 2 kits required per

pump.• Seal trim kits containing all the elastomer

parts for the complete seal - 2 kits requiredper pump.

• Wave springs or coil springs suppliedindividually.

• Housings supplied individually.• Drive plates supplied individually.

When servicing seals, it is not normallynecessary to fit new springs and housings.Drive plates should be inspected for wear andreplaced as necessary. Face kits do not containelastomers. Ensure that the correct elastomertrim kits are ordered for the application.

The double seals fitted to 55 Series pumpsretain all the features of the single seals, butwith the facility to contain a fluid behindthe primary seal.

This allows the pump to be used for applicationswhere the single seal is unsuitable.

Features of the double seals include:

• Highly effective sealing of flushing fluids

• Can be used with steam aseptic barrier

• As easy to assemble and service as singleseals

• Share many common parts with single seals

The double seal uses a pair of seal facesmounted behind the primary seal. One face isfitted into the back of the seal housing and theother fits onto the rotor retainer. Springs fittedto the rotor retainer keep these faces together. This seal was designed especially for the55 Series pump and enables the double seal tobe fitted into a very small space within thepump so that pump performance is notcompromised. In use the space between the primary and

secondary seals is fed with fluid or steamsupplied through pipes connected to drilledholes in the rotor case.

Double seals are available in two face materialcombinations:

Carbon on Silicon-carbide primary faces –designated code 4Silicon-carbide on Silicon-carbide primaryfaces – designated code 1In all double seals, secondary faces are alwaysCarbon on Silicon-carbide.

Double seals Codes 1 and 4 are run with a fluidbetween the primary and secondary seals toform a barrier between the pump and theatmosphere. They are used with:

a) A high pressure liquid flush (fig. 2) when:

• The pumped fluid is toxic or hazardous andmust not escape from pump even in minutequantities.

• The pumped fluid has no lubricatingproperties and cannot be allowed onto sealfaces.

• Pumped fluid is highly viscous, i.e. over150,000 cp.

• A high pressure sterile liquid barrier isrequired.

b) Steam (fig. 3) when:

• No bacteria or contamination can beallowed to enter pump, i.e. an asepticbarrier.

c) A low-pressure liquid flush (fig. 4), when:

• Pumped fluid changes state in contact withair, e.g. crystallizes, forms a film, dries out orprecipitates solids. The flush dissolves andrinses away the small amount of residuewhich could build up on the edges of theseal faces.

• Pump fluid is hot, i.e. over 80°C (175°F). Theflushing fluid is used to cool the seal faces.

• Pumped fluid is temperature sensitive anddegrades when heated by the shearingaction of the seal faces.

• Pump must run “dry”, i.e. no liquid in thepump chamber.

• Pump is under high vacuum.

• A low pressure sterile barrier is required.

The code 1 double Silicon-carbide on Silicon-carbide seal is used where face wear would beunacceptable, i.e.

• For abrasive fluids containing crystals, powders or particles which would rapidlywear away the carbon of the code 4 seal.

• Where shedding of particles into the fluidstream must be avoided.

Refer to section 8 of the technical manual formore information on seal selection.

Note that model 55210 cannot be fitted withdouble seals.

a) When the double seal is used with a high-pressure flush for the reason describedabove, a flushing system must be installedas follows:

• The flushing liquid used must itself becompatible with the pumped fluid and mustitself not require a complex seal, i.e. must benon hazardous, non abrasive and lubrica-

ting.

• Flush liquid must be at a pressure of 1 bar(15psi) above the discharge pressure of the55 Series pump and should flow at 35 to 55liters/hour (10 to 15 US gal/hour) per seal.See Figure 2.

b) When the double seal is used with asteam barrier, the steam must be:

• Clean, filtered and wet, i.e. not superheated, but the pressure of the steam should be aslow as possible consistent with the desiredtemperature. Wherever possible, sterileliquid e.g. steam condensate should be usedas a flush but where steam is essential, greatcare must be taken with the design ofplumbing, steam traps and controls. Thesteam should be connected as shownopposite to allow any condensate to drainfrom the lowest point.

c) When the double seal is to be used witha low pressure flush, a flushing fluid systemshould be installed as follows:

• Liquid must be compatible with the pumpedfluid; water is the most commonly usedliquid.

• Pressure shall typically be 0.5 bar (7 psi)gauge.

• Temperature shall be maximum of 70°C(160°F) for water, less for volatile liquids(minimum of 30°C (55°F) below boilingpoint).

• Flow rate shall be 2 to 3 liters/min. (0.5 to0.75 US gal/min) per seal.

• Plumbing should be as shown in thediagram (fig 4).

For seal installation and repair, refer toinstallation, operation and maintenance manual.Pumps built with double seals can be convertedas follows:

• To other face materials e.g. from code 4 tocode 1.

• To other elastomer materials, see ElastomersData Sheet.

• To single seals, simply by removing thesecondary seal faces, springs and joint rings.See Single Seals Data Sheet.

All pumps except model 55210 can beconverted from single to double seals.

Refer to Installation, Operation and Mainte-nance Manual for instructions on seal removaland fitting.

If a pump build specification is changed at anytime, the model number should be changed onthe pump nameplate to ensure that correctspare parts will be ordered.

Double seal spare parts are supplied as:Primary seal face kits –

2 kits required per pump.Secondary seal face kits –

2 kits required per pump.Seal trim kits containing all the elastomer partsfor the complete seal –

In a 55 Series pump there are only 5 sealingcomponents in contact with the pumpedfluid, 2 joints on each primary seal and onejoint to seal the end cover to the rotor case, and these are all specially molded gasket-type joints. Great care is taken in themanufacture of the seals to ensure thatthere are no imperfections on the surfaceswhich can harbor bacteria and the design ofthe moulds is such that there is no mouldingflash on critical sealing edges.

55 Series pumps can be specified with 3alternative sealing materials:

A hygienic grade of EPDM which conforms tothe requirements of the US FDA Code ofFederal Regulations Title 21 section 177.2600“Rubber Articles Intended for Repeated Use”.This material is chosen for its excellentresistance to water-based solutions, andparticularly to hot water and steam, and alsofor its acceptability in contact with pharma-ceutical products, foods etc. EPDM is notsuitable for contact with mineral oils. For fulldetails of material compatibility, refer to JabscoLiquid Compatibility Guide, publication numberSD932.

VITON® – correctly referred to as F.P.M. Thishas excellent resistance to many chemicals, oilsand solvents and also has a wide operatingtemperature range. FPM is less suitable for SIP(steam-in-place) applications.

PTFE / Perfluoroelastomer – also referred to as

Teflon® / Kalrez®. These materials have out-standing chemical resistance. In pumpsspecified with this elastomer option, the endcover joint ring is supplied in solid virgin PTFE

conforming to US CFR Title 21, 177.1550. Theseal cup rubbers are molded in a proprietarygrade of perfluoroelastomer ROP550. The sealstationary seats are sealed to the rotor case

with O-rings in Kalrez® grade 4079.

Pumps can easily be converted to otherelastomer specifications by ordering acomplete pump head trim kit. Refer toInstallation, Operating and MaintenanceManual for instructions on seal removal andfitting.

If a pump build specification is changed at anytime, the model number should be changed onthe pump nameplate to ensure that correctspare parts will be ordered.

Elastomer spares can be ordered as:• Seal trim kit – containing all the elastomer

parts for one complete seal – 2 kitsrequired per pump.

• End cover joint ring – supplied individually• Pump Head trim kit – consists of all the

elastomer parts required for one completepump.

The standard 55 Series end covers are completelyflat. This ensures that there are no crevices wherecontaminants can collect and that the pump caneasily be cleaned in place. The end cover is held inplace by bolts and can easily be removed forinspection of the pump head and for servicing.

The 55 Series end cover does not use an O-ring.Instead it is sealed by a special gasket type jointring, fitted in a groove machined in the front faceof the rotor case - Fig 1. There are no crevices atall in the fluid-contact area and there is no groovein the end cover. This joint ring has flared edgesto ensure excellent sealing against productleakage and ingress of airborne bacteria. It is acontrolled-compression design to preventextrusion due to overtightening. In combinationthese features contribute to the 55 Seriesexceptionally high CIP capability.

Refer to Elastomers data sheet for materialavailability.

55320 & 55420 size pumps may also be fittedwith an end cover to accommodate an asepticbarrier of sterile liquid or steam - Fig 2.

This can be specified at the time of ordering thepump by using code 5 for the end-cover in themodel number.

Existing pumps can be modified by changingthe end cover and rotor case. The end-coverbarrier will normally only be used in conjunc-tion with double seals. The barrier fluid isconnected in a similar way - Fig 3.

For dimensional drawing see Double Shaft Sealdata sheet.

Pumps are available with an optional jacket endcover. This allows hot water or steam to bepiped to the pump to maintain producttemperature in the pump or to heat the pumpprior to starting.

04/01 55.6.31

55 Series Lobe Pumps

55 Series pumps are available with threealternative finishes for all fluid-contact surfacesi.e. rotors, internal surfaces of rotor case andend cover, port bores.

Product contact surfaces are machined to 0.8micron Ra (32 micro inch). This conforms to thecurrent requirements of US 3A Standard 02-09.This is accepted by many users as adequate forhygienic applications.

Some users, particularly in the pharmaceuticalindustries, specify electropolish and althoughthe measurable change on surface roughnessafter electropolishing is small, the effects are:-

a) Rounding and smoothing of surfaceimperfections - thus reducing the ability ofproduct to adhere to the surface or bedamaged by the sharp protrusions on thesurface.

b) Cleaning and passivating the surface -improves corrosion resistance and preventsthe release of surface impurities into theproduct.

Components having product-contact surfacesare electropolished all over and therefore giveimproved external cleanability.

Users requiring the very highest standards ofpurity can specify mechanical polishing. Allproduct contact surfaces are polished to asurface finish of 0.5 microns Ra, (equivalent to20 microinches Ra and approximating to 240grit finish) and then electropolished. Theadvantages of this are:-

a) Improved cleanability. Due to the virtualelimination of crevices, even micro-biologi-cal particles cannot become trapped, i.e."held up" on the surface during cleaning

b) Less product damage. The removal of thesmall but sharp surface peaks left bymachining operations reduces damage, particularly to cellular products

All product contact surfaces are polished withsilicon carbide abrasive. The last grit utilised is240 grit or finer and results in a surfaceroughness of 0.5 micron Ra. The polishingprocess is controlled to remove the minimumamount of material from the componentsurfaces consistent with achieving the aboverequirements. Surface contours are maintainedand square corners are not rounded thusminimising loss of pump performance.Following mechanical polishing, componentsare electropolished on all surfaces.

Users should be aware that, although polishingimproves the flow through valves, pipes, etc.it reduces the output from a positive-dis-placement pump when pumping low-viscosityliquids. Polishing increases slippage so thepump needs to be run faster to compensate. This may be undesirable as it can result ingreater shear stress and greater shear damage tothe liquid. It is possible that the additional sheardamage to delicate liquids resulting from theextra slippage can outweigh the benefits ofpolishing. Also, an unnecessarily large pump maybe needed to compensate for the loss of output.

In many applications not only in the hygienicindustries (food, pharmaceutical etc) but also inchemical and industrial duties, fast and effectivecleaning is important. Living contaminants suchas bacteria and other organisms must not beintroduced or allowed to multiply and all tracesof fluid must be removed at the end of a batch, process or at product changeover to prevent anyintermixing. To understand the features andbenefits of the 55 Series pumps it is important tounderstand why and how equipment is cleaned.

In order to clean a pump or other piece of'closed' equipment, it must either bedismantled (manual cleaning), or cleaned inplace (CIP) as part of the procedure for cleaningthe entire process. The higher the standardrequired, the more sophisticated the cleaningprocess. The standard (level) of cleaningrequired depends on the needs of the process. There are four generally recognized levels:

The type of cleaning system used dependspartly on the level of cleaning required but alsoon what is to be removed. Cleaning, whethermechanical or CIP, depends on a combination of:

Organic materials such as oils, fats, proteinsneed a different system to inorganic materialssuch as mineral salts. Detergent manufacturerscan give advice on the correct use of chemicalsand temperature. CIP usually needs a velocityof 1.5 m/sec (5 ft/sec) through the pipeline toachieve the turbulent flow required

Manual cleaning has the advantage that nospecial plumbing and CIP equipment (tank, heater etc) are needed. But CIP is becomingmuch more common as there are manyadvantages of CIP over manual cleaning.

Page 30: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

Most pumps with internally-contacting parts orwith internal bearings can not generally becleaned in place to the standards demanded bythe contaminant-sensitive industries. This in-cludes most gear pumps, sliding-vane pumpsetc. Also manufacturers of many older designsof lobe pumps claim that their products can beCIP cleaned but this may be only partly true, depending on the pump design and on thelevel of cleaning required by the customer.

55 Series lobe pumps from Jabsco are designedto be CIP cleaned to a high standard. (For moredetails on these features, refer to appropriatedata sheets).

Crevice free shaft seals: 55 Series pumps useshaft seals which not only provide a bacteria-tight joint but also meet the highest CIPrequirements. In most rotary lobe pumps thefluid contacts the inside diameter of the shaftseals, an area from which it can be very difficultto clean out product and contaminants. In the55 Series seal, fluid only contacts the outsidediameter of the seal.

Self-Draining Features: By careful attention tothe shape of not only the rotor bores but alsothe shaft seals, 55 Series pumps can be drainedof fluid prior to cleaning. Also, they can becompletely emptied of CIP fluid prior torestarting the process by mounting the pumpwith the inlet and outlet pipes vertical.

Surface Finish: 55 Series lobe pumps aremanufactured to a high standard of internalsmoothness, 0.8 µ Ra (32 micro-inches). Op-tional electropolishing cleans and smoothensthe surfaces without reducing efficiency and afurther option of mechanical polishing to asurface finish down to 0.5 µ Ra (20 microinches) can be specified.

External rotor retainers: by holding the rotorsonto their shafts outside the pump chamberany areas where pumped fluid can collectaround bolts and recesses can be totallyeliminated,

Gasket Type Joints: the 55 Series designcompletely eliminates O-ring joints from thefluid-contact areas including the shaft sealsand the end-cover joint.

The Jabsco 55 Series pump has passed the onlyinternationally recognized tests designed toprove the hygienic standards of pumps andsimilar equipment. The pump was tested atTNO, the Dutch national testing authority, totest protocols developed by the EuropeanHygienic Equipment Design Group (EHEDG).An independent association, with membersdrawn from users and manufacturers ofequipment as well as from research associa-tions. EHEDG was established to influencestandards of design and testing of hygienicequipment to ensure foods and similarproducts are processed hygienically and safely. The 55 series pump easily passed all three tests:

1) In-place cleanability2) In-line steam sterilizability3) Bacteria tightness

The EHEDG clean-in-place protocol comparesthe cleanliness of the pump to the cleanlinessof a piece of reference pipe connected to thepump and subjected to the same testprocedure. The system is soiled under pressurewith a soured milk solution containing sporesof a bacterium strain. The assembly is subjectedto a light clean-in-place routine, drained andthen the inner surfaces are covered with amolten agar. After incubation, the degree ofdiscoloration of agar (resulting from residualbacteria after cleaning) is compared to thatfrom the reference pipe. All components mustshow no greater discoloration than thereference pipe for the pump to pass the test, proving that there are no crevices in whichproduct and hence bacteria could accumulate. The pumps easily passed this test. Copies of theTNO certificate number 95-087 and TNO testreports numbers V95.159 and V95.189, as wellas full details of the test protocols, are availableon request from Jabsco.

Each pump is supplied in a generally cleancondition but it is the responsibility of the userto establish suitable cleaning and sterilizingregimes appropriate to the fluid and process. These should be implemented before the pumpis first used and as often as required thereafter. The following guidelines will help with effectivecleaning of 55 Series pumps and minimize riskof damage to the pump.

1. Rinse through system with a suitable liquid, usually water at approximately 50°C (120°F),as soon as possible after completion ofprocess to remove bulk of residues beforethey dry onto surfaces.

2. If CIP will not be carried out immediatelyafter rinsing, leave pump and system full ofrinse liquid.

3. Choose chemical cleaning agents to suit thenature of the contamination to be removedand use them in accordance with manufac-turer's recommended dilution, temperatureand circulation time but do not exceed 90°C(195°F). Confirm compatibility with pumpmaterials of construction.

4. CIP fluid flow should result in a meanpipeline velocity of at least 1.5 m/sec. (5ft/sec).

55 Series Lobe Pumps

If using the lobe pump to circulate the CIPfluid, refer to the Performance Data Sheetfor pump speed to give required flow, takingaccount of pressure losses through plumb-ing. Note that all pumps are moresusceptible to cavitation when pumping hotliquids. Ensure adequate Net Inlet Pressureavailable. If using a separate pump tocirculate CIP fluids, the lobe pump may needto be rotated at a speed sufficiently high toallow the fluid to pass freely through. Ifsufficient pipe velocity cannot be achieved, fit a by-pass loop to divert excess flow pastpump.

CIP fluid pressures must equal or exceedprocess pressure at all points in the systemto ensure fluid reaches all contact surfaces. It may be necessary to restrict flow indischarge plumbing to achieve this but donot exceed differential pressure and temper-atures shown on pump Performance DataSheet. A minimum differential pressure of 1bar is recommended for effective cleaning.

5. After CIP, rinse through with neutralisers andclean water to remove all traces of cleaningagents.

Do not pass cold liquid through pumpimmediately after hot - allow tem-perature to change slowly. Failure to

observe can result in pump seizure.

See Installation, Operating and MaintenanceManual for procedures to dismantle and re-assemble fluid contact parts. 55 Series pumps arenot intended to be manually cleaned, however, ifit does become necessary to manually clean thepump, take note of the following:-

Take care not to scratch or damage pump partsespecially seal faces.

Do not use steel abrasive wool or brushes onfluid wetted surfaces as particles may becomeembedded in the surface and cause corrosion.

Use suitable cleaning agents in accordancewith their manufacturer's instructions regard-ing temperatures, dilutions, skin contactprecautions and other safety information.Thoroughly clean all fluid contact surfaces andrinse as required. As a minimum it will benecessary to remove the end cover and rotorsand stationary seal faces. It should not benecessary to remove the seal rotating seatsfrom the rotors during routine cleaning.

This information is provided for guidance only.It is the responsibility of the pump user tosatisfy himself that the CIP protocol chosen isadequate to achieve the desired levels ofcleanliness and Jabsco cannot accept anyresponsibility for contamination or loss ofpumped fluids.

Procedure ForManual Cleaning

Page 33: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

In truly sterile processes, all product-contactcomponents need to be sterilized. This is u s u a l l yachieved by heating to high temperature (up to140°C, 285°F) to kill organisms still remaining onthe surface of the equipment. This can beachieved by physically dismantling the pumpand autoclaving the parts, bagging, taking backto the pump and re-assembling; a long, costlyprocess which causes problems to personnel andcan result in accidental damage to components. But when using the 55 Series pumps it ispossible to pass steam through the completeassembled system to sterilize the internalsurfaces without dismantling the pump.

To achieve 100% sterility, it is important tosteam through for a period long enough forthe coldest part of the system to reach thecorrect temperature and hold for the timeperiod required to kill off the organisms. The55 Series pump head is designed to completelyself drain, ensuring all surfaces are exposed tosteam and the component shape and choice ofmaterials ensures thermal stability andtemperature tolerance.

The Jabsco 55 Series pump has passed theEHEDG (European Hygienic Equipment DesignGroup) test protocols for In-Line SteamSterilizability. These were carried out at TNO,the Dutch national testing authority. Copies ofthe TNO test report No. V95.189, as well as fulldetails of the test protocols are available onrequest from Jabsco.

If using chemical sanitizers, follow guidelines asfor CIP above.

If using steam, pump specification must bechosen at time of selection noting:

EPDM elastomers offer best resistance torepeated steam contact but will need to bechanged periodically. PTFE (Teflon) is leastsuitable for steam contact - PTFE end coverjoints may need to be replaced every time thepump is sterilized.

Pump should be mounted with the port axisvertical to avoid collecting liquid pools.

1. Thoroughly clean pump and process linesprior to sterilization.

2. If pump is fitted with sterile barriers (onseals, end cover) for the purpose ofmaintaining sterility, barrier fluid must beconnected throughout SIP cycle to avoidre-infection.

3. Pass clean, wet steam through system untilall component temperatures have stabilized.Steam must be free of scale, rust andparticles - a filter may be necessary. Typicallysteam will be at 121°C (250°F) and 1 bar (15psi). Soak time, to bring the pump up totemperature, is typically 20 minutes but thisshould be established, e.g. using thermo-couples, as the required soak time will varywith individual installations.

Do not rotate the lobe pump duringthis heating phase.Do not loosen or remove any pumpcomponents or pipe connectionsduring steam sterilization as escap-ing steam may cause serious injury.

4. Continue to pass wet steam through the lobepump and process lines during the hold time.Hold time will be determined by the user toachieve desired level sterility. Typically this willbe between 20 and 60 minutes.

The lobe pump should not be rotatedduring this hold time unless absolutelyessential to achieve sterility, due toincreased risk of pump seizure.

All pump components will normally reachdesired temperature by thermal conductionwithout rotating the pump.

If essential, the lobe pump can be rotatedduring hold time by hand - beware of dangerof hot surfaces - or at a maximum of 50 rpmif the pump is fitted with either:

Single carbon/silicon carbide seals (Code 8).

Double seals (codes 1 or 4) provided a liquidflush, e.g. condensate, is connected and opera-ting at a pressure above the steam pressurewithin the pump during SIP. If the lobe pump isfitted with single silicon carbide/silicon carbideseals (Code 2) it must not be rotated duringhold time as the seal faces can bind together.

5 . At the end of hold time, pump must beallowed to cool naturally or can be purgedwith sterile air/inert gas.

Pump must not be rotated duringc o o l i n g .

6. Do not allow cool liquid to enter the lobepump before pump temperature has fallen to60°C (140°F) or lower.

If the pump is fitted with single siliconcarbide/silicon carbide seals (Code 2), flood itwith liquid to lubricate the seals beforerotating it.

Page 35: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

An aseptic process is one in which all unwantedmicro-organisms are kept out of the fluidstream. This prevents spoiling of sensitiveproducts and ensures that only the intendedreactions take place in the process. In the 55Series design, high specification joints are usedinstead of O-rings ensuring that microbialcontaminants cannot enter the product zone.Once the system has been cleaned andsterilized it will remain clean and sterile.

For increased security, secondary joints can befitted to all potential entry points of 55 Seriespumps to allow steam or sterile fluid barriers tobe connected. Also, a pump which is externallydirty on the outside will harbor colonies ofbacteria which are more likely to infect theinternal surfaces of the pump. All 55 Seriespumps are designed to be easy to cleanexternally and are therefore less likely to causeproduct contamination.

Secondary Joints are:• Endcover barrier - see separate data sheet.• Double Mechanical shaft seal - see separate

data sheet.

(2) Make preliminary pump selectionUse the table and graph at start of section9 of this technical manual to establish if the55 Series is suitable for the application andapproximately which size of the pumpshould be selected.

(3) Select materials, surface finishrequirements, shaft seal typeCheck that fluid is compatible withmaterials of construction of the 55 Seriespump. Establish any special surface finishrequirements, as polished pumps havedifferent performance characteristics.

Use flow chart on page 55.08.03 to selectthe most suitable shaft seal for the fluidand the application. This must be donenow as not all shaft seal types are availableon all models of 55 Series pumps.

(4) Calculate inlet (NIPA), outlet anddifferential pressuresIf precise pressures are not known, thesemust be calculated from the flow rates, fluid viscosities and plumbing details. Also, the fluid vapor pressure must beconsidered, especially for hot or volatileliquids, as this affects the net inlet pressureavailable (NIPA) at the pump.

(5) Select rotor type and clearancesUse the chart at the start of section 9 toindicate the most likely rotor type andclearance for the application.

(6) Establish pump speed for process andCIP flow ratesEstablish the pump running speeds for allthe application points required, includingCIP using the correct performance datasheet for the pump size, rotor type andsurface finish selected (Fig.1)

Pump Selection Procedure

Summary of Selection Procedure:

Page 38: 55 Series Lobe Pumps - Depco Pump

(6.1) Check that differential pressure does notexceed limit at operating temperature.

(6.2) If liquid has viscosity similar to water(1cP or less) use the diagonal lines todetermine correct speed for givenrequired flow rates according to thedifferential pressure.

(6.3) If liquid viscosity is high (over approx.1,000 cP), read speed directly from 0 barline irrespective of the differentialpressure.

(6.4) For lower viscosities:(6.4.1) read horizontally across from fluid

viscosity on left-hand scale tointersect the correct differentialpressure curve.

(6.4.2) read vertically up to intersect thezero flow line.

(6.4.3) read diagonally parallel to 1 cP linesup to intersect with required flowrate.

(6.4.4) at intersect read vertically up to topline to determine speed.

Note that performance data given is for atypical pump in new condition. In production, individual pumps can vary by up to ± 10%.When selecting pumps to operate at low flowrates, especially on thin liquids, a smallvariation in pump efficiency or fluid viscositycan have a very large effect on flow rate and onrunning speed required for a given flow rate.Take special care when selecting pumps whichoperate below the broken line (6.4.5) because:(i) a variable speed drive is recommended

to compensate for performance variability.(ii) excessive fluid shear can damage delicate

products due to the high ratio (>10:1) ofinternal slip to pump output.

If pump speed is too high based on the natureof the fluid to be pumped, the application andthe maximum speed of the chosen pump, repeat selection procedure from step (5) fornext (larger) pump size.

(7) Check for risk of cavitationUsing reverse side of Performance Datasheet, read NIPR at chosen speedcorresponding to liquid viscosity. If NIPR isgreater than NIPA calculated from pipesystem information, either:(i) Repeat selection procedure from step

(5) for next (larger) pump size.(ii) Increase NIPA, e.g. by increasing pipe

diameter or reducing length of inlet pipe.

DisplacementMaximum Differential Pressure

- bar (psi) for each rotor typeMaximum Flow

The maximum flow figures shown above, andthe 0 psi line on the performance data sheets onthe previous page, are derived from thetheoretical maximum displacement of eachpump. In practice this flow can rarely beachieved and allowance must be made duringselection for internal slip and NIPR requirements. The performance shown on the performancedata sheets at other pressures is the result ofcontrolled laboratory tests on representativepumps in new condition.

Due to manufacturing tolerances, internal slipcan cause actual performance of any productionpump to vary by ±10%.

* Note 1 - Scimitar rotors, code 8 & 9, haveslightly lower displacement compared to 5 loberotors (codes 0, 1 & 2).

* Note 2 - Rotor material is non-galling alloy (see55.6.06).
