1980 2000 Fairview Mall opened its doors on August 5, 1970, becoming Cadillac Fairview’s first shopping centre in the GTA. Fairview Mall was the first multi-level shopping centre in the GTA. At the time, the mall was the fourth fully enclosed shopping centre in the GTA. Fairview Mall is actually older than the iconic Toronto Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto, which opened in 1977. There were 104 stores in the shopping centre in its opening year. The main anchor stores in 1970 included The Bay and Simpsons. When the mall opened in 1970, a local couple came in and had their first date. We recently invited them back to the mall to celebrate their 50th anniversary! Community Information Fairview has been a part of Fairview Mall since 1971 - 49 years! The organization has been assisting the local community with legal counselling, advice on taxes, employment, housing, immigration and more. Susan Knish has been the Executive Director since the organization became a part of Fairview Mall. In 1973, Fairview Mall issued the first edition of Fairview Mall Magazine featuring popular Fairview Fashions. Holiday season looked a little different in 1973 - 3-wheelers for kids cost $11.99! In 1977, the mall hosted an arts and crafts show featuring soapstone sculptor Simeonie Eliasiapik. Fairview Mall was a landmark for postcards in the 1970s. blogTO even featured it here. Miss Teen Toronto was crowned at Fairview Mall in 1984. The mall’s first major expansion took place from 1987 to 1989. Renovations featured a glass-tiered ceiling, similar to Toronto Eaton Centre, which opened much of its interior to natural lighting. Irish boy band Westlife performed at the mall in 2000, and signed autographs for fans after the show. In 2002, Don Mills station was completed and opened. Line 4 was also introduced to the TTC system. Fairview Mall underwent a $90M renovation beginning in summer 2006, which took over two years to complete. In 2008, renovations were completed to include an expanded Shoppers Drug Mart, a newly configured Club Monaco, and an expanded TD Canada Trust and LensCrafters. As part of the 2006-2008 renovation, the food court was relocated under a 60-foot high skylight near The Bay. Seating increased from 500 to 700 after the renovation. In 2008, the exterior of the centre received an upgrade and new dining options including Moxie’s Classic Grill. In 2009, Cineplex opens; replacing the former Rainbow Cinemas. In 2009, Bath & Body Works, Forever 21, Sephora, Hollister Co., and Zara opened. 1970 50 facts in honour of 50 years at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a hit in 1990 - the movie sold out at a theatre in Fairview Mall. In 1991, original anchor store Simpsons closed and became Sears. Sunday shopping was introduced in Ontario in 1992. In 1996, the southwest corner of Fairview Mall’s parking lot was redeveloped into a TTC parking deck. In summer 1996, Fairview Mall introduced Petting Pals, an indoor petting zoo experience. 1990 Fairview Mall was officially renamed to CF Fairview Mall in 2015. In 2015, CF Fairview Mall introduced CF SHOP! Text, a mobile concierge service which will give consumers access to guest services at their fingertips. In 2016, the mall hosted Girls’ Night on Thursday evenings and provided shoppers access to a private Girls’ Night Lounge. To celebrate the opening of the NYX store, the mall held a meet and greet with beauty bloggers @glamzilla, @msroshposh, and @bodmonzaid in 2016. In 2016, Team Canada alumni and professional basketball player Alisha Tatham visited CF Fairview Mall for a meet and greet at the Olympic Lounge. In 2017, CF Fairview Mall installed 23 EV charging stations. To kick off the spring season in 2017, CF Fairview Mall featured the Garden of Light, an interactive LED flower light show. All entrances to the mall were renovated to incorporate hands-free technology in 2018. The mall hosted a viewing lounge for the Women’s World Cup in 2019. In 2019, luxury jewelry brand Birks opened a new concept store at the mall which featured a bridal bar. In late 2019, TFC professional gamer Philip Balke visited the mall to introduce a new gaming chair. 2010 TODAY CF Fairview Mall announced a major redevelopment. The centre’s current redevelopment includes plans for residential towers, office towers and a hotel. The Bay is one of CF Fairview Mall’s oldest tenants, anchoring the mall for the past 50 years. Apple recently expanded its space with a newly redesigned interior. CF Fairview Mall proudly hosts Lunar New Year celebration events each year. CF Fairview Mall currently has more than 160 retailers and food vendors. CF Fairview Mall currently has 4588 parking spaces. CF Fairview Mall currently has 42 CF employees. In honour of the centre’s 50th anniversary, CF donated $200 on behalf of every CF employee to the North York General Hospital Foundation.
