Again I have very sad news about a member of our racing family. “Sport” Mercer passed away on Sept. 2nd. No one knew him by his name Albert James; we all called him “Sport”. He was a TRUE SPORT! He was loved and respected by every person that had the honor of know- ing him. In my early days he would call me “Sugar Boy” as he did all of us young sprouts. He was just a huge part of our lives. “Sport” you will be truly missed by all of us at the track. Rest in Peace My Friend. We also send Get Well Wishes to Wilbur Goraum, father of Mike, after a vicious head on collision on August 27th on Interstate 10. Most of the time I enjoy writing this column,

but too often this year we have had to mention things not at all to our liking. Again I have very sad news about a member of our racing family. “Sport” Mercer passed away on Sept. 2nd. No one knew him by his name Albert James; we all called him “Sport”. He was a TRUE SPORT! He was loved and respected by every person that had the honor of know-ing him. Wilbur who drove Bomber 5X, is recovering fast but the young man who hit him did not fare as well. Our condo-lences to his family.

Now about tonight. Five class are on hand and

double points awarded in all classes except Modifieds. Some drivers will be out to protect their lead, some wanting to inherit the lead, and others just wanting to move up in the champion-ship standing as the season is winding down.

Tonight’s sponsor is Lloyd’s Glass. Lloyd’s owner,

Barry Lintner, has been a sponsor here for several years. His involvement dates back to the Bryant’s incep-tion at the track and is appre-ciated by all of us.

A lot of big events are just around the corner so

make sure you tune in to “IN THE GROOVE” on BLAB TV or go to our website at 5flagsspeedway.com to keep up with all the upcoming events. Now, let’s go racing, we have 5 features tonight to get in. -Steve Stokes

Remembering

Sport Mercer A dear man who was fixture here for 27+ years, was laid to rest this week. Sport Mercer loved racing and was a key figure in the early years, making it possible to keep the track’s power grid going. Sport brought his 2 sons to the track, never imagining they would become outstanding drivers. Eddie and Stevie would pursue their dad’s racing dreams for years to come. Daughters Tina and Wanda were always here supporting their brothers. We wish for God’s richest blessings on Carole his wife of 55 years, and the Mercer family. Sport was a proud Navy veteran and just as proud to see Eddie win the 2005 Snowball.
