ABSTRACT

The demand for smartphone has exponentially increased in line with the advancements in technology. Along with this growth is the increasing number of technological possibilities and innovations that can solve common problems for the average smartphone user, such as being lost in an unfamiliar place or building. Modern buildings have grown in number and size which makes it more difficult to remember every turn and direction. Though it may seem simple, an average person wastes hours in just exploring a building, which leads to a waste of time and energy. Hence, the researchers conducted a study of a design and development of an indoor localization system available for Android-based smartphones. This study focuses on developing an indoor directory, using NFC and QR code, which can guide an end-user inside a building. It is called Mobile Indoor Localization App or MILA.

The method to design and develop the study is made of five parts: Conceptual Stage, Design Stage, Development Stage, Procurement Stage, and Documentation Stage.

After development, the system was deployed in the building for testing and evaluation. Software Evaluation Standards was used in evaluating MILA. A survey from 50 respondents was also done to further assess the quality of users experience when interacting with MILA. Ratings were averaged using Likert scale; it showed a high positive result that proved the significance of MILA.

From the test and survey results, recommendations were formulated to further improve the application. The researchers recommended utilizing the application in museums, malls, and other big buildings that can greatly help people/visitors of unfamiliar places to exploit the building hassle-free.
