Reports and InterviewsThank you to everyone who last week attended aninterview on their childs behalf. We hope you feelsuitably informed about their progress and achievement.This is our first attempt at reporting against the NationalStandards and I would be interested to receive yourcomments on how useful you found the standards and howuseful you found the interviews.

Teachers will report on childrens progress again inDecember. Please also note that you can talk with yourchilds teacher by appointment at any time if you have

concerns about them.Proposed Support for SchoolsYesterday the Minister of Education Anne Tolleyannounced the Government's plans for a much strongerfrontline focus on lifting student achievement.

She said, While there is much we can be proud of in oureducation system, too many students aren't achieving eventhe minimum qualifications they need to be engaged andinformed citizens, and to play an active role in our society.Change will happen only if there is a relentless, systemwide focus on improvement.

The Minister outlined three core elements to the focusincluding: expert practitioners appointed to work closely with

schools

the redesign of teacher professional development new programmes for students who need additional

support.

Practitioners who have proven skills in lifting studentachievement will be appointed to regional Ministry officesto work closely with schools. These people will be drawnfrom the wider education sector and from within the

Ministry.The aim of this refocused approach is to ensure all schoolshave the capability to improve outcomes for all students.Schools require differing levels of support but all schoolscan expect more direct support from the Ministry to liftstudent achievement.

We look forward to seeing how much of the money getsbeyond Auckland. In our school we have had programmesand professional development in place to improve literacyachievement the evidence can be seen in the board oftrustees annual reports for the last three years. We havebeen generally satisfied with our students progress and

achievement in mathematics and this year we are givingspecial attention to the teaching of writing. At this stagewhat would make the greatest difference to our studentsachievement is to appoint additional specialist teachers to

work with children. We know from the way we use ourresources that that is what will make the biggest differencefor us. Lets see what the Ministers policy will actually

deliver for our school.

Board of Trustees QuestionnaireEarlier in the term a Board of Trustees questionnaire wassent home asking for your feedback on certain aspects of theschools operation. We would appreciate it if you couldreturn those as soon as possible. Board members wanted tobase their decisions on good information so your feedbackis extremely important. If you have misplaced your formplease ask at the office for another.

Congratulations to Sir Geoffrey Palmer, an old boy of the school and whose

Family Trust sponsored the external signage around theschool. The former New Zealand Prime Minister SirGeoffrey Palmer will chair an internat ional panel lookinginto an Israeli attack on an aid flotilla in May.

Wanted house to rentDoes anyone have a house they wish to rent? Do you knowof anyone else who has a house to rent? If so can you pleaselet us know at school. We have a staff member who islooking for somewhere to rent and any information orcontacts would be appreciated.

Absences

Conflict resolutionIf children are having disagreements amongst themselvesplease remember that is normal and something childrenneed to learn how to handle. Adults should not approachother children at school in an attempt to settle things or tosort it out. That approach often does more harm than good.The best approach is to discuss with your child suitableconflict resolution techniques including avoiding conflict,being honest about ones own part in the conflict andavoiding escalating a conflict. If you are aware of your child being bullied then pleaseapproach the classroom teaching immediately so thematter can be dealt with internally. If we know aboutsuch incidences we can do something about it.
