First Peoples’ House (FPH) at the University of Alberta (U of A) is hosting its 4th Annual Miyopimâtiswin Golf Tournament on Friday, June 26, 2020. We are calling on all interested individuals and corporations to join us in supporting First Nations, Métis and Inuit students at the U of A on their journey to higher education.

By supporting our golf tournament, you are helping fund an important program at FPH that provides our students with the opportunity to engage in physical activity, connect with their peers and improve their physical health.

Why Miyopimâtiswin?

We named the golf tournament Miyopimâtiswin, which is Cree for a good life or a good way of living, as it aligns with our vision to empower our students to achieve personal and academic growth. We believe that with your support our vision can continue to be a reality.

Background

FPH provides support and services to over 1,300 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students at the U of A.

While post-secondary education offers many benefits, including empowering students to pursue their dreams, it can also be challenging. Surveys show that many students across campuses in Alberta feel overwhelmed and struggle with mental health issues. At the same time, a growing amount of research indicates that engaging in regular physical activity can have a positive impact on mental health.

This is what inspired FPH to create a program that allows our students to access Campus and Community Recreation activities, such as fitness classes and intramural sports teams, by minimizing financial barriers.

Help Us Empower First Nation, Métis and Inuit Students at the University of Alberta.

A Message from Our Students

I’ve had the pleasure of managing the FPH Thunderbirds in the hockey intramurals provided by the UofA. This team has helped me find community through sport and has connected myself to Indigenous students from different faculties. The team created the possibility to make long lasting friendships between teammates and provided space to improve team building skills. It also allows students to de-stress from school and get active.

Being part of the FPH intramural hockey team has allowed many indigenous students to connect and build community. Most of the players have never had the opportunity to play hockey and being part of the team allows them to engage in a positive atmosphere where they are able to learn new skills. For myself the team provides a break from the stresses of life as a student as well as a fun way to get physical activity. Everyone I’ve met that plays on the team is thankful to have the program in place.

tân’si my name is Chelsea Behn and I am a fourth year Native Studies student. I am so grateful for First Peoples’ House for providing miyopimâtisiwin, which means living the good life in Cree, because it gives me, and other Indigenous students the opportunity to become more active and it allows us access to trying more interesting workout classes. In the past I have taken zumba classes, and right now I am currently in a beginner kickboxing class. It is beneficial because as students we can’t always afford to try cool things, but miyopimâtisiwin gives me and other Indigenous students the opportunity to try. This program is very good because it promotes a healthy way of living. It gives students a time when we can destress, where we aren’t thinking about school, and allows us to have fun while exercising. hiy hiy
