Say this about John Daly. The man has not changed.Loud as his golf pants, Daly is the same irrepress-

ible character he was when he first burst upon the American golf scene 24 years ago.

Has it been that long since Daly arrived at the PGA Cham-pionship as the ninth alternate, in the field because Nick Price withdrew and the other eight on the list ahead of him were other-wise unavailable, than, with Price’s caddie on his bag went out and won the whole shooting match?

It has. And in that near quarter-century, which has seen Tiger Woods become dominant and then fade to the middle of the pack, Daly has skyrocketed to the heights, fallen to earth, and repeated the process, all of it in as public an eye as accompanied Woods since his Thanksgiving evening drive into a fire hydrant.

To steal a line from Jack Brickhouse, Daly may have been a burden, but he was never a bore.

There may be no second acts in American life, but there are certainly curtain calls, and Daly has had more than one.

Recently, he turned up at U.S. Cellular Field be-fore a White Sox game, plugging one of his products.

He also had a few off-the-wall comments about golf today and his role in it.

“After seeing my name on about 10,000 bar menus,

I decided about two years ago to do a real John Daly cocktail,” Daly said in the Bard’s Room. “Sweet tea lemonade. We’ve got raspberry and we’ve got peach.”

Call it a Millennial’s version of an Arnold Palmer. Daly calls it a success.

“We’re in 26 states now with my drink in less than two years. We’re actually kicking ass with my drink. Pizza, that’s going good too. Perky’s Pizza, John Da-ly’s Pizza, we’re doing well with that.”

So Daly’s brand goes beyond the wild pants he’s been wearing the past couple of years. But the Arkan-san won’t give up loyalty for lucre.

“Loyalty is better than anything, and honesty, that’s the way I live life,” Daly said. “I want the drink in Ohio, but I want the White Sox to beat the Reds, too, because I’m a Cardinals fan. Grow up in Arkansas, you become a Cardinals fan.

“If we get into Ohio, I’ll be loyal to Ohio, too.”As for the state of men’s pro golf today, Daly sees

four as eminent.“Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods aren’t done

yet,” Daly surmised. “They both are artists and they both practice really hard, like I do. I still feel if you put Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods against Jordan Spi-eth and (Rory) McIlroy, my guys are gonna beat ‘em. And my guys are Phil and Tiger. I love ‘em to death.

“Jordan is on the putting roll that Tiger Woods had for 10 years, and McIlroy is really good. The ball-strik-ing is impeccable.”

coming for what’s now the Encompass Championship at North Shore Country Club – the club’s in the final year of three as host – does that mean the 50-plus set won’t be back in Chicago in 2016?

Well, that’s the way to bet, especially with the June 1 anouncement that the Champions Tour has a sponsor and a course in Madison, Wis., for a tournament beginning next year.

Steve Stricker spearheaded the move, even though the 48-year-old won’t be eligible to play in it until 2017. But Ameri-can Family Insurance will sponsor, and the University of Wisconsin was coaxed into holding it at University Ridge.

The coaxer? Stricker, who bent ath-letic director Barry Alvarez’s ear during a basketball game over the winter.

So Madison has a sponsor, a course, a date for 2016 (June 22-26, if you’re plan-

ning ahead, and which happens to be the approximate date of the Encompass week-end the last two years), a three-year com-mitment from AFI with an option for 2019, and a local favorite (plus Jerry Kelly, J.P. Hayes, Skip Kendall and two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North) and to help sell tickets.

Chicago has no sponsor, no course, and no local favorite.

Say no more. Except goodbye.DEERE NEXT: The John Deere Clas-

sic has been sponsored by Deere and Co. since 1998, one of the longer sponsorship runs on the PGA Tour.

Expect it to get longer. Deere’s deal with what was originally the Quad Cities Classic runs through next year, but the expectation is the biggest employer in the QC area will renew for another term of at least three years.

The Grill Room by Tim Cronin

Make no mistake, the Players is a majorThe arguments came loud and long after

Rickey Fowler captured the Players Championship.

They were made, in fact, before anyone had bought the topic up, as if the defense had to be made before anyone went on offense.

The argument: The Players isn’t a major championship. More than one story had this theme: “Rickey Fowler didn’t win a major, but...”

But what? But the Players is a major. It has been for some time.

Don’t take the word of this corner as the de-finitive word. Look at the actions of the players in the Players. Or, if you prefer, The Players.

They play hurt. They schedule themselves into what they hope is the right frame of mind, either by playing the week before, or not.

They understand the course will be difficult – not insane, but far tougher than the usual PGA Tour setup, which is meant to induce birdies.

They even get the idea behind the 17th hole, the famed par 3 with the island green where NBC stations more cameras than it used to use on a moon shot. Really, it’s easier than it looks, but coming where it does in the round, and as the centerpiece of a dramatic closing stretch, it’s as famous a hole as there is in golf. A tip o’the tam to Alice Dye for nudging Pete to make it happen.

With all that and with each passing year add-ing to the history, it’s clear that the Players has become one of the five most important tourna-

ments of the year in men’s golf. This year’s sensational shootout, captured by Fowler at the end of an impossibly exciting final three hours, only made it obvious. It mattered who won.

That’s not the case in Palm Springs or Greensboro or most of the other stops on the oversize check tour.

It took the Masters about 20 years to really be accepted on the same level as the U.S. Open and PGA. The 1954 playoff between Sam Snead and Ben Hogan was the trigger. And like it or not, the Western Open became a near-major.

Today, with television a considerable influ-ence, there’s room for five majors.

The Masters. The Players. The U.S. Open. The British Open. The PGA.

Now, how do you rank them? The U.S. Open used to be the unmatched

No. 1, unless you bowed to the Queen, in which case it was the British Open. The Masters was usually second, the “other” Open third, and the PGA more often than not brought up the rear.

Jack Nicklaus, with a closet full of green jackets, famously placed the Masters fourth,

correctly noting “it isn’t the championship of anything.”

Ah, but the Masters has what no other tour-nament has. An aura. The combination of beauty and history and being played at the same place every year – and being first – gives the Masters the goosebump factor among spectators that no other tournament can duplicate.

That is what the Players has been chasing. The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass isn’t a botanical garden, but like Augusta National, it changes even as it doesn’t change.

Plus, as with Augusta when the greens are slick, it demands proper placement off the tee and precise second shots. A player has to think before pulling the trigger, and pros hate to think.

For the home viewer, limited commercial breaks mean more golf on the telly than any tournament except the Masters.

The winners are worthy. Not always known – hello, Craig Perks – but every major has outli-ers. The Masters had a slew of them a generation ago, and Charlie Coody and Tommy Aaron were thrilled to surprise everybody.

Former commissioner Deane Beman’s pronouncement that his baby was a major upon inception in 1974 long worked against it being recognized as such. Beman was premature, but correct.

Major? Unquestionably.Fifth among equals? Probably. But the PGA

ought to watch its back.

One for the thumb After 42 years, it’s time to welcome the Players into the majors’ fold.

118th NCAA Championship

Illinois overmatched against USCStroke play victory earns top seed, but Illini ‘crumble’ on back 9 against Trojans in semifinals

By Tim Cronin–––––

In another era, there might have been a pa-rade in downtown Urbana to celebrate an NCAA title for Illinois’ men’s golf team.

The Fighting Illini, after all, scored lower than the other 14 teams in stroke play at the 118th NCAA Championship.

But since 2009, the NCAA crown has been decided in match play. The stroke play competi-tion decides the individual champion, but when it comes to the team title, it merely determines the eight survivors for match play.

And never in seven years has the stroke play winner – the top seed – won the championship.

The vagaries of match play were once again on full display at Concession Golf Club in Bra-denton, Fla. on Tuesday, June 2. Illinois rallied on the back nine to defeat eighth-seeded UCLA 3-2 in the morning quarterfinals, and then fell as some brilliant shotmaking by fifth-seeded South-ern California combined with some blunders by the Illini to give the Trojans a 3.5-1.5 victory and a berth in the championship match against Loui-siana State. The Tigers romped, 4-1, in the final.

“It’s a one-day shootout, and with that comes uncertainty,” Illini coach Mike Small said. “We played well at times and didn’t finish in others. What we did to UCLA in the morning got done

to us in the afternoon by USC.“We just kind of crumbled a little bit. But it

was a great season. Rated No. 1 for a lot of the

season, win the stroke play against the best teams in the country, just straight-up golf for four days and we had the low score.

“A lot to be proud of and a lot to build on.”And a lot for the Illini to kick themselves re-

garding match play.Detry, whose next stop is the Palmer Cup at

Rich Harvest Farms, had chased the individual stroke play title, only to finish tied for third, two strokes behind Bryson Dechambeau of Southern Methodist. But the Illini, with Detry and Camp-bell posting 70s that counted, edged Vanderbilt by two strokes finish first in stroke play.

Once, that meant the championship. Now, it puts a target on the backs of the players.

As it turned out, Detry was the only Illini to go 2-0 in match play. He birdied four of his last six holes to steal a 2 & 1 victory from UCLA’s Manev Shah in the morning, then beat USC’s Sean Crocker by a like margin in the afternoon.

The other results were mixed. Charlie Dan-ielson was stunned by Rico Hoey of USC, 2 & 1, after going 2 up through five holes. Hoey eagled the par-4 ninth hole via a 180-yard hole-out to square the match and steal the momentum. Danielson had won seven straight holes to come from behind and shock UCLA’s Jake Knapp in the morning.

Brian Campbell, the only senior, went 0-1-1. He was 2 up on USC’s Jonah Texeira at the turn and settled for a halved match after losing to UCLA’s Jonathan Garrick in the morning.

Dylan Meyer was a surprising 0-2, and fel-low freshman Nick Hardy, playing in the last spot both in the quarterfinals and the semis, went 1-1, losing his last four holes to lose to USC’s Eric Sugimoto 3 & 1. Hardy was 1 up after a birdie on the 13th. Sugimoto had chipped in to win the second hole and held the lead until the 12th, but Hardy, who rallied to beat UCLA’s Preston Valder in the morning, couldn’t duplicate the feat.

By Tim Cronin–––––

The 18-person selection committee of the Il-linois Golf Hall of Fame had a difficult choice on May 13.

It wasn’t so much who among the 10 finalists should be inducted. All were worthwhile, and all will likely be inducted eventually.

It was whom each of the 18 had to leave off their ballot, which had room only for five names.

A depth of the field was the best in years, and at the end of Selection Night, three of the 10 gained the necessary two-thirds vote for election.

H. Chandler Egan, a amateur-turned-archi-tect from a century ago, and Leon McNair and Jim Sobb, professionals of current vintage, won election as the Hall’s 16th class. They will be in-ducted on October 23.

Egan received votes from 16 of the 18 casting ballots. McNair collected 14, and Sobb 13.

It’s an overachieving class. Chandler Egan’s amateur playing record was outstanding, and his architectural resume, which includes the remod-eling of Pebble Beach, has until now been largely unheralded.

McNair has done it all in golf, from construc-tion to running a first-class shop to innovating programs to bring people into the game and keep them there.

H. Chandler EganRaised in Highland Park, H. Chandler Egan owns one of the greatest amateur records in American golf. Egan won the U.S. Amateur twice (1904-05), the Western Amateur four times (1902-04-05-07), as well as the Intercollegiate (now NCAA) individual title in 1902. Runner-up in 1903 Western Amateur, 1904 Olympic Games at Glen Echo, 1909 U.S. Amateur. Jumped into course design after moving to Oregon, including a remodeling of Pebble Beach, improving 16 of the 18 holes in conjunction with Robert Hunt-er, in 1928, two years after he won the California Amateur on the course. Egan designed 18 courses, including Eugene Country Club. Egan was a five-time winner of the Pacific Northwest Amateur.

Leon McNairA co-founder of the Illinois PGA Foundation, Leon McNair has been interested as much in the charitable side of the game as the playing side. He was head professional at Fox Bend, a course he helped build working for architect-builder Brent Wadsworth, from its opening in 1967 until his retire-ment in 2005. He’s a member of the board overseeing the First Tee of Aurora and Fox River Valley, and president of Wadsworth Golf Charities. He was Illinois PGA Section president in 1991-92. As a player, McNair was part of a Southern Illinois squad that won the 1964 NCAA College Division championship. He’s a former member of the Hall of Fame selection committee.

Jim SobbA Palatine native and two-time Division II All-America recipient at Western Illinois, has compiled one of the better playing records among current Illinois club professionals. He’s won three Illinois PGA Championships (1995-99-2000), and four Illinois Match Play titles (1990-93-95-2011). In the latter year, he also won the Illinois Senior Match Play, becoming the only player to sweep both match play crowns in the same year. Sobb won the player of the year title in 2000 and has won the senior player of the year title five times since 2007, including last year. He’s played in the Radix Cup 22 times, more than any other professional, and second only to Joel Hirsch’s 23 appearances, with a record of 13-5-4. A two-time winner of Illinois PGA professional of the year (1995-2000) and former member of the Hall’s selection committee, he also collected the Bill Strausbaugh Award for service to his fellow pros in 2012.Photos courtesy Don Holton / Exmoor CC Archive (Egan); Mike Schoaf / Illinois PGA (McNair, Sobb)

Billiter sinks Brodell on 21st holeNew faces dominate down the stretch in season’s first state major at Kemper Lakes

By Tim CroninReporting from Hawthorn Woods

–––––Jim Billiter made a splash on his 29th birthday. Then he won the 64th Illinois PGA Match

Play Championship. With a bogey. In the final twist of a match with plenty of

them, Billiter beat Brian Brodell for the title on the 21st hole – after hitting his tee shot on the par-3 third hole at Kemper Lakes Golf Club into the water.

The assistant at Merit Club accomplished that on May 14 with a bogey thanks to a saucy pitch shot to about seven feet from the cup, and cour-tesy of Brodell bouncing his 171-yard 7-iron tee shot over the green and then chunking his chip shot. That left him an even more treacherous par chip, which went 12 feet past the cup.

When Brodell, an assistant at Mistwood Golf Club, failed to sink the bogey putt, Billiter stepped up and sank his.

Game over. Trophy presented. Winner delight-ed and dumbfounded. Loser just dumbfounded.

“When I shanked it in the water, I thought it was over,” Billiter said of his full-out 8-iron. “But as soon as I saw him go long, I knew I had a chance. That’s a really delicate shot. I thought he’d hit it long and two-putt for a four.

“Then he gave me a little luck when he flubbed

his first one. I figured we’d both make (four) and go to the next hole.”

Billiter’s 90-yard pitch from the drop area was sublime, and left him about seven feet. He

drained it with brio.“The whole day, I was nervous,” said Billiter,

who closed out Prestwick’s Simon Allen 4 and 3 in the morning semifinal. “It’s emotionally tax-

Page 10: Illinois Golfer June 2015

Page 10 • June 2015 • Illinois Golfer www.illinoisgolfer.net–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––ing. Six rounds in three days, plus I played 36 on Monday (at two courses). It was exhausting.”

It might also signify the beginning of a sea change in those at the top in state professional golf. Match play can be capracious, but the Illi-nois PGA Match Play is generally an exception. Favorites prevail, and familiar faces are always in the final four.

This year was different. While Billiter had won the Assistant’s Match Play title, this was his first time in contention in a state major, a group of six tournaments, three of them open only to Il-linois Section pros, two only to amateurs, and the Illinois Open, which is open to all.

Brodell is new to the state and the Illinois Section. He’s in his first full year at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, after a stint as assistant men’s coach at Purdue.

He was sitting at the bar in the Kemper Lakes clubhouse after the match. There’s no truth to the rumor he ordered a boilermaker.

“That was a sad way to end it, and it would have been sad for him to end that way if he shanks it in the water and I (win),” Brodell said. “I had confidence in the chip, all of a sudden I flub-shank it, and the rest is history.”

But he made it to the final match, and the fol-lowing notables did not:

• Three-time defending champion Curtis Malm, bounced in the fourth round.

• Top-seeded Travis Johns, who fell to Billiter in the quarterfinals.

• Ageless Jim Sobb, the new Hall of Famer, ousted in the fourth round.

And so it went, until only Allen, of the four semifinalists, had experience at that level.

The championship match was a woulda, shoul-da, coulda match – with the regulation 18 played in

just 2 hours 40 minutes – from the start.Billiter was 2 up after two holes, but Brodell

eagled the fourth hole and squared the match at the fifth.

Brodell led 1 up with a bogey at the eighth when Billiter doubled it – the reverse of the fran-tic finish – and then bogeyed the ninth, making the match square at the turn even though, with the usual concessions, Brodell had scored even par 36 to Billiter’s 3-over 39.

Brodell sank a 12-footer for birdie on the par-4 12th and remained 1-up until he bogeyed the par-4 16th. Billiter handed the lead back by plunking his tee shot into the water on the par-3 17th. Brodell smacked his tee ball to 15 feet and Billiter gave him the hole after hitting the back fringe with his third.

Billiter’s big tee shot at the last set up a 116-yard second. He wedged it to eight feet above the hole.

“It was almost easier being down one, be-cause I knew I could just swing hard, and the putt, I knew I could ram it in,” Billiter said.

After Brodell’s longer birdie putt missed, Bil-liter stepped up and sank his to force extra holes. Along the way, Billiter lipped out three putts that would have won holes. And Brodell was coming close from long range.

“They were all decent putts, so I was OK with that,” Billiter said of his close calls. “I had looks, but I was nervous and my putting was tentative all day.”

Routine pars on the first two holes brought them to the third tee, and the final surprise.

Brodell advanced to the title match with a 19-hole victory over Glen View Club’s Kyle Bauer.

Billiter collected $4,000 for his effort. Bro-dell was awarded $2,000, as balm.

It was a classic battle of old salts, and the kid won out.

Doug Bauman, at 58 one year Jim Sobb’s ju-nior, scored a 1 up victory in the final match of the Illinois PGA Senior Match Play Championship at Shoreacres in Lake Bluff on Thur., May 28.

Bauman, head pro at Biltmore, thus defended the title he won for the first time last year. Ivanhoe sage Sobb, recently elected to the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame, was also seeking his second title.

the 54th Radix Cup started slowly. One from Glenn Przybylski and Blake John-

son, the third pair out, on the front nine of Oak Park

Country Club’s Donald Ross-designed course. A half-point from the next twosome, the team of Ray-mond Knoll and Jack Watson.

Even when the next amateur pair, Kyle Nathan and Chadd Slutzky, won the front nine from pros Curtis Malm and Rich Dukelow, it only meant the annual scrap between the best of the Illinois PGA

Section and the amateurs picked by the Chicago District Golf Association was even.

Then Tim “Tee-K” Kelly and Dan Stringfel-low, a pair of collegiate big hitters from Medinah Country Club, laid a 4-up rout on pros Travis Johns – who teaches at Medinah – and Matt Slowinski.

were in the process of a come-from-behind victory in the Radix, the type of turnaround that rarely hap-pens. Usually, one team gets out front and stays there. Not this time. While the first two pro pairs scored 3-0 victories, the amateurs won the final four matches and 11 of the last 12 points for an 11-7 victory to grab the old bowl on Wed., June 3.

It was the seventh triumph for the amateurs in the last 11 renewals, and the most surprising. The ams won 3.5 points in the last four matches on the front side, another 3.5 on the back, and all four overall points in those matches.

Kelly, fresh off his victory in the Joliet Amateur (page 18) believed it was the youthful makeup of the amateur squad that helped carry the day.

“The young guys coming up, there’s just a lot of talent out there nowadays,” Kelly said. “The last five years in Chicago, you’ve got Dan (Stringfel-low), Raymond (Knoll), myself, even Doug Ghim at Texas and Kyle Kochevar. We’ve got a lot of re-ally good young adults and college players in this area now.

“It’s because we’ve all pushed each other. A couple of guys were better younger. Young golf is pretty hot right now in the Chicago area.”

That’s a theory backed by fact. When the ama-teurs first broke through in the mid-1970s, they were led by a kiddie corps featuring Gary Hallberg, Jim Joseph, Lance Ten Broeck and Tom Evans. History does repeat in golf.

Jerry Rich didn’t have to go to all the trou-ble.

Having built a great fortune, and then using a small part of it to build a golf

course in his backyard, Rich didn’t have to go and share.

John D. Rockefeller, the oil baron who built courses on two estates and bought a third, hadn’t.

Walter Annenberg, publisher of newspapers, TV Guide and the Daily Racing Form, hadn’t.

Albert Lasker, creator of modern advertising, whose William Flynn-designed Mill Road Farm on the outskirts of Lake Forest was the toughest course in Chicagoland, hadn’t.

When those moguls built private courses, they stayed private as long as their owners decreed.

Creator of the integrated stock quote machine – he was Bloomberg before Bloomberg – Rich first built his backyard course a little at a time – three homemade holes, then a few more, then multiple tees, then, in concert with architect Greg Martin, the full 18.

Then, rather than only play with family and friends on Rich Harvest Farms’ course from that point, Jerry Rich went in another direction.

He opened the doors. Now, not to everyone – though there remain

blueprints for an additional 18, one that would be open to the public, that Rich mothballed over a decade ago when the golf boom fizzled – but far wider than anyone could have envisioned.

It started with a pro-am to benefit the Kids Golf Foundation, which he started in 1998 as a way of giving back to his fellow man through the game. A pro-am with Sam Snead – whom he met at Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach, Fla., where both were members – and Bob Murphy be-

gan the fund-raising efforts. That wasn’t enough. He invited the Western

Golf Association to drop by, and they played the Western Junior there in 2003.

That wasn’t enough. Rich, through his Pine Tree membership, also became friends with Beth Daniel. Soon enough, Rich was negotiating with the LPGA to bring the Solheim Cup to his Sugar Grove enclave.

Courtesy Rich Harvest Farms (including photo on page 14)

Unlike any other Rich Harvest Farms’ course includes the 16th, a downhill par 5 of 634 yards with a third shot over water to a green fronted by quarry rock (above) and the claustrophobic 13th (previous page), featur-ing a dogleg-left fairway speckled with trees. An artificial turf mat that created sparks, real and verbal, remains as a tribute to Jerry Rich’s persistence.

In 2007 it arrived. So did more than 30,000 people a day, thanks to several years of spade-work in attracting interest in the Naperville-Joliet area. The first day of play saw the biggest traffic jam in the history of Sugar Grove. A better traffic pattern the next two days got everyone in quick-ly, and those who were there saw a thriller, the American team rallying to score a victory over the visiting Europeans.

Page 16: Illinois Golfer June 2015

amid the aural bedlam of Chicago’s south side, will defend his crown under the silent skies of Sugar Grove.

Before that, this very month Rich Harvest hosts the Palmer Cup.

A cross between the NCAAs and the Ryder Cup, the Palmer Cup was started by Arnie himself in 1997, and his Bay Hill Lodge was the early host before it went on the road.

To say Rich is tickled is to understate it.“A unique event – the 10 best Americans

against the 10 best European-born players,” Rich said when the Palmer was awarded to Rich Har-vest. “Arnold wants to bring it to a whole new level and raise a little more money, because they don’t have the sponsors in Europe that we have here.”

In 2018, the Palmer Cup will expand to in-clude women.

This year’s 19th edition includes Illinois’ Thomas Detry, 3-1 in the 2014 Palmer Cup and

the latest in a line of standouts from Belgium lured to Champaign by Mike Small; the afore-mentioned Hossler, who plays for Texas; Fred Haskins Award winner Maverick McNealy of Stanford; and Arizona State’s Jon Rahm of Spain, the world’s top-ranked amateur and this year’s Ben Hogan Award winner.

The coaches are Georgia Tech’s Bruce Hep-pler for the U.S., and for Europe, France’s Jean Van de Velde, whose collapse at the end of the 1999 British Open remains vivid.

They’ll be playing alternate shot and best-ball matches in the morning and afternoon of June 12, and singles on both the 13th and 14th, using the same rotation of holes as was used in the Sol-heim Cup. That means there’s drama early, with a reachable par-5 guarded by a lake, and late, with the final hole offering options off the tee.

Remarkably, admission is free for both the Palmer Cup and the Western Amateur. To say the least, that’s rich.

On the Rich Harvest Farms Docket 2015 Palmer Cup June 12-14 U.S. vs. European collegians in Ryder Cup format 2015 Western Amateur August 3-8 Best 156 amateurs chase a major amateur title 2016 International Crown July 19-24, 2016 32 LPGA players from eight nations in team play 2017 NCAA Women’s Championship May 19-24, 2017 Team and individual college championships 2017 NCAA Men’s Championship May 26-31, 2017 Team and individual college championships

Rich Harvest Farms, a course some love and some love to hate, was on display across the globe for three days. Quirky in places and sublime in others, it proved to be a good course for match play golf, for there’s plenty of risk and reward across the 18 holes.

But that wasn’t enough, either. Well before the Solheim, Rich had an idea for what might, for lack of a better phrase, be called a super-Solheim. Rather than a U.S. vs. Europe showdown, Rich wanted the best players from across the globe in a team format. Four players from each of eight na-tions, duking it out for the International Crown.

LPGA commissioner Mike Whan, whom Rich has on speed dial, listened and agreed. Rich sought a sponsor, thought he had one, and saw it back out when the Great Recession hit.

Years passed, but Rich finally got the go-ahead from the LPGA. The first in what will be a biennial series was staged at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Spain was the surprise winner.

Next year, the International Crown, now with UL as a title sponsor, comes to what Rich hopes will be its permanent home when it’s played in the United States. (In 2018, it will be played in South Korea.)

But there’s more. The Northern Illinois grad had long donated the use of his course to the Hus-kies golf teams for practice and competition, with an NCAA regional there in 2007. That helped convince the NCAA to award the 2017 men’s and women’s championships to Rich Harvest.

But there’s even more, and this year. In Au-gust, Rich Harvest hosts the Western Amateur, second in age and stature to only the U.S. Ama-teur on the play-for-pride circuit. Beau Hossler, who triumphed last year at Beverly Country Club

Too many trees leave turf quality in shadowLuke Cella

Most golf courses in the Midwest, especially in Illinois, have many trees. Some of the trees have be-come part of the course, strategi-

cally defining how we play certain holes.Recently, I played a course I had managed

over 20 years ago, one I had not visited for a long time. It was hard not to notice the trees, some that were gone, but most those that had become quite large and impacted the course dif-ferently from what I had remembered. The trees also impacted the turf.

It is hard to think of shade in a negative light because we enjoy it so much, especially on a warm afternoon as we seek to escape the sun. But that tree shade filters the sunlight from the turf.

All green plants require sunlight, a concept most learned when examining photosynthesis in grade school. What most didn’t learn is that plants require a specific color within the spec-trum of light for photosynthesis to occur. Both trees and turf need that same specific color of light and since it hits the trees first, the turf never gets the right sunlight. Simply, turf in shade does not have the correct light to photosynthesize. This is the filtering effect trees have on turf.

Turf in shade is weakened. The filtered sunlight limits the amount of growth no matter what a superintendent will do to it. It needs more sunlight. If you were fed every nutrient your body needed to capacity except one, say iron, that lack of iron would be the limiting factor in

the function and growth of your body. Iron is an important component of hemoglobin, the sub-stance in our red blood cells that help transport oxygen throughout.

An iron deficiency means oxygen can’t be used because we don’t have enough iron to create the hemoglobin to help transport it. In the same way, shade limits the growth of turf because it prohibits the necessary amount sunlight from reaching the plant needed for photosynthesis.

In addition, tree roots compete with turf for water and nutrients during the growing season. Even out of the growing season shade impacts turf during our winters. Winter shade keeps the soil cooler longer and can cause ice to form, sometimes damaging turf.

Some trees are an integral part of a course. They help to define and frame golf holes. Trees provide backdrops for putting greens and can di-rect play on a doglegged hole. There is no doubt

some trees have their place on a golf course. However, the ones that don’t influence

play but impact playing conditions should be considered for removal or trimming. There are many tools that a superintendent can use today that measure the true amount of sunlight that is blocked/filtered by specific trees on a property. The impact of pruning limbs, thinning canopies and removing individual trees can now be calcu-lated before the work is done.

Forever there will be the fight between trees and turf for sunlight. Just remember, golf is played on the turf that covers ground, not on the trees that impact the turf.

Around Illinois

By Tim CroninReporting from Joliet

–––––His given name is Timothy. Says so on his birth

certificate and his driver’s license. But on every scoreboard, it’s Tee-K, not Tim

Kelly.A name to remember, it seems.Kelly, a Wheaton native who just finished his

junior season at Ohio State, captured the Illinois Amateur two years ago. On May 30-31, he added his name to the distinguished list of winners of the Joliet Amateur, winning the 50th playing at Wedge-wood Golf Course.

Kelly collected the trophy on Sunday, but it can fairly be said that he won it the afternoon before, when, in a windblown monsoon on the level of the one portrayed in “CaddyShack,” Kelly scored 3-under-par 69. That wasn’t the low score of the day – a 67 was posted in the morning by Hinsdale teen Drew Shepherd – but it was six strokes better than anyone else scored on Saturday afternoon.

In other words, watch out for Kelly. And in the final round, played in a stiff north-

east wind, he delivered with an even-par round of 72 for an aggregate of 3-under 141 and a one-stroke victory over Trent Wallace, a Joliet resident headed for Illinois State who had graduated from Joliet West two nights before, and Ben Bradbury of Mo-kena, whose 4-under 68 was the best score of the

Kelly captures 50th Joliet Amateurfinal round.

That was nothing compared to Kelly’s 69 on Saturday.

“Probably the worst weather I’ve played 18 holes of golf in,” Kelly decided. “And one of the better tournament rounds I’ve ever played. It was still tricky today, though. The wind was swirly and some hole locations were tricky. You’ve just got to keep your ball in front of you.”

He did, and continued to do so. In the final round, Kelly was 6-under for the championship through 12, but doubled the par-3 13th when his wind-aided tee ball sailed left and out-of-bounds.

Suddenly, he and Wallace were tied. Bradbury would join them for a moment soon after, but Kelly was the steady one down the stretch, playing the last six holes in 1-over, a lip-out bogey on the par-4 16th his only miscue.

“After yesterday, I know I can play in any-thing,” Kelly said. “I just kept giving myself birdie looks and settled for tap-in pars.”

None of Kelly’s myriad 15-footers for birdie dropped, but Wallace only made one birdie down the stretch, and bogeys on 12, 13, 15 and 17 ne-gated his good work on the 14th, where he planted an approach a foot from the cup.

Wallace scored 1-over 73 on Sunday to reach 142.

“On 15, I had 50 yards in (with the approach) and made bogey, and I three-putted 17,” Wallace

said. “My putter and my wedges failed me. I’ll forget about it. Maybe not tomor-row, but I’ll forget about it.”

Bradbury’s road to 142 was a roundabout one. A for-mer sales rep for Bettanardi Golf, he traded that life for a job in the real world a few years ago, and hadn’t played a great deal of competitive golf since.

But an opening 74 was five strokes to the good of the cut line, placing him in the back half of the field.

Starting on the 10th hole, he was making pars and not making putts. That changed on the front nine, where he birdied five of the first six holes to elbow his way to the front of the field.

Only a bogey on the sev-enth hole, his 16th of the day, kept him from forcing sud-den-death with Kelly.

“I didn’t do anything dif-ferent,” Bradbury said. “Putts just started falling for me. I didn’t think that was close for the lead at all.”

Shepherd, a Hinsdale Central standout making his debut in adult golf, had sur-prised the field with the 67 for the overnight lead. He scored 4-over 76 on Sunday

and finished fourth at 1-under 143, treating the weekend as a learning experience in finish-ing fourth. Nobody else in the field broke par, or matched it.

“I struggled most of the way and figured out how to make scrappy pars,” Shep-herd said. He hadn’t broken 73 in three IJGA appearances this season.

Woodbine to reopenClosed last year as a

result of Homer Glen’s pur-chase with an eye toward creating the southwest subur-ban town’s first park, Wood-bine Golf Course is close to reopening.

Village officials, stymied by the inability to figure out how to turn the clubhouse into a village hall for a rea-sonable price, and without a plan for a park, decided to in-vite the Ludwig family, for-mer owners of the 103-acre course, to reopen it under contract through 2016, The Daily Southtown reported May 28.

New mayor George Yu-kich said an engineer will be hired to look into flood con-trol, after which a park plan-ner will create a master plan for the park.

The Encompass Championship, the Chicago area’s likely-to-disappear stop on the Champions Tour, needs volunteers for its third edition, set for North Shore Country Club in Glenview from July 8-12.

Volunteers are needed for gallery control, player and fan services, parking, admissions, scoring and cleanup, tournament director Mike Galeski said.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of any golf tournament in that they help assure that the char-ity beneficiaries of the event receive the highest possible financial contribution,” Galeski said. “We are interested both in people who have vol-unteered previously at golf tournaments and in those who are just interested in seeing what it might be like. We invite anyone who’s interested to contact us.

“We have a volunteer force that is committed to helping us create the best possible tournament experience while at the same time making new friends and renewing old bonds while support-ing charity and being part of the great game of golf.”

Five strokes over four rounds by five play-ers separated Northwestern’s women’s team from a berth in the match-play portion of the NCAA Championship at Concession Golf Club in Bra-denton, Fla., last month.

The Wildcats took 10th play, its best finish, but one that came up short of getting to match play, and a shot at the NCAA title.

Still, the best finish for the team in NCAA play wasn’t a downer.

“I am really proud of the way we played to-day,” coach Emily Fletcher said when play con-cluded May 25. “It was tough and the girls just continued grinding. To see the progress we have made over the last seven years is just incred-ible.”

The Wildcats tied for 15th the last two years, and have reached the NCAA finals four straight years. Northwestern scored 14-over 302 for 66-over 1,218 in the final round.

Junior Suchaya Tangkamolprasert, a WGCA honorable mention All-America selection, led the yea with an even par 72 to finish tied for 10th. That’s also a best for the Wildcats.

“It was obviously a team effort,” Tangka-molprasert said. “Seeing [my teammates] fight so hard really kept me going and definitely brought out my best game.”

Four Wildcats return for the 2015-16 season.

Ghim excels for TexasArlington Heights’ Doug Ghim quickly found

a spot on the traveling squad for Texas, but the freshman dropped a 2 & 1 decision to USC’s Rico Hoey in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Champi-onship.

Ghim had led the Longhorns in stroke play, tying for eighth at 2-under-par 286 at Concession on rounds of 72-73-70-71. Teammate Beau Hoss-ler, whom Ghim lost to in the quarterfinals of last year’s Western Amateur, was 10th in stroke play at 287.
