The Word Of God First Reading Acts 4:32-35

What does being a follower of Jesus

mean? In this reading, we see that it

includes a new “belonging” to the

family of the faith, a belonging which

implies community of goods and gis.

Second Reading 1John 5:1-6

If someone said to you, what does

“loving” God mean, what would you

reply? There is a threefold response

in today’s reading – the first two are

what you would guess but the third

one is challenging.

Gospel John 20:19-31

This is a justly famous and remem-

bered story. Why was it wrien? To

reassure people that later genera-

ons in the faith were not less fortu-

nate than earlier generaons. Per-

haps we too may suspect that for

people before us faith was somehow

easier.

Thought for the day How did any of us make the journey

towards faith in Christ? No doubt a

great part of it is simply what we

received—usually from family. At

some point, did I make a conscious

choice? Perhaps at other mes, I felt

like walking away the faith project?

What kept me going? Did a more

personal ownership of faith result?

Perhaps I can idenfy with the intui-

on of John O’Donuhue, “Faith is

helpless aracon to the divine.” In

spite of everything, in spite of myself,

somehow it is part of who I am.

Prayer

Mysterious God, we are those who

have seen and at the same me not

seen. Help to look beyond the simple

gis of each day to see you the giver

behind—and in—every gi. Help us

embrace the grace that we may know

true blessedness in believing.

“HE IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD AND HE IS LORD!”

We live in illusion when something less than the Risen

Christ becomes our fulfilment. We are made for more,

for life to the full. (Jn 10.10)

The new Resurrecon Chrisan community focussed its

aenon in an amazing awareness and expressed it in

a kind of creed, “Jesus is Lord”. They saw God’s loving

acon give Him full power over our lives and our world.

No longer is Caesar lord, but Christ.

We can easily fool ourselves in thinking we are in charge of our own lives and future. At the same

me we experience other forces at work within us, controlling us, tripping us up. St. Paul knew

our problem. We dream of wholeness but we are fragmented. We set high goals but sele for

lile. There is a core wobble within us, like Paul menons in Romans 7.7. When we live at the

surface of life, we will feel betrayed because our deep needs are not met by shallow gods who

own us.

Life faces us with fundamental choices. By what values and principles will we live? Who will be

Lord of our lives? Few people today make their gods of brass or wood. But many shape them in

other ways. Our real gods are what shape our lives. To what am I unable to say NO? In crisis

me, on what or whom do I really depend? My bank account? My doctors? My power or

wealth? My ideologies? My success? My golf ? My Emperor? They are our real gods and lords.

The New Testament Chrisans knew none of these sasfied the heart or freed from fear and

insecurity. Paul explains how God gives us the gi of a new Lord, the Risen Jesus. All others fail.

Only He is safe and saving. To accept Him is to become a different person. We can trust him for

me and eternity. The whole world is in His hands. His way is gi and adventure more than de-

mand, freedom more than control, love over obligaon. To follow Him is to become a “new crea-

on”. When Jesus is Lord we become our best selves.
