1945 – FAIR LIVESTOCK 4H boys and girls fed 386 head of livestock, producing 94,250 pounds of extra livestock from the farms helping with the food needed during the war. Feed shortages prevented many project animals from exhibiting at fair and were sold later in the year.

1945 – FAIR LIVESTOCK

• 4H boys and girls fed 386 head of livestock, producing 94,250 pounds of extra livestock from the farms helping with the food needed during the war.

• Feed shortages prevented many project animals from exhibiting at fair and were sold later in the year.

1945 – Fair

• Warren Lewis fed two lots of 32 western feeder lambs and garnished 2nd and 3rd place pens of lambs, all scoring blue ribbons and sold for 18 cents per pound in district feeder lamb show.

• Two field days at Experimental Farm had 600 in attendance.

• Farm labor supply still low. Requested consumption of wheat and its products by 40% and 20% fats to aid in the food shortage and starving in Europe.

• Public meetings held to inform public of need for food conservation.

• County advisory committee assisted returning WW II veterans with on the farm training.

• Soil fertility still a problem and 38,585 tons of lime stone was spread in the county.

• Excessive rainfall at corn planting time reduced corn yields by 40%.

• 6 of 9 field days were held at Experimental Farm with over 900 people attending.

• County wide fly control program using DDT secured 75% eradication.

• Rural and urban school organizations participated in a hot school lunch program.

• Family Living started planning meetings for running water systems in farm homes.

• County 4H basketball and softball tournaments were popular.

• 4H Girls clubs canned 12,296 quarts of food, froze 6430 pounds, and stored 2,340 containers of jelly and jams.

• Grand Champion baby beef and angus shown by Helen Lappin sold for 42 cents per pound.

• Reserve champion crossbred Hereford shown by Merton Fairchild sold for 36 cents 100 wt.

• Market litters sold from 42 to 44 cents per pound. Market lambs averaged 30 cents a pound.

• A better milking clinic held at the Cresco High School theater in February 1949 to emphasis sanitation in keeping herd health and producing high quality milk. With no cure for mastitis, sanitation was helping with prevention.
