STATEMENT OF NEED High-quality continuing education for healthcare professionals is
necessary in order to provide state-of-the-art care to patients with diabetes, obesity and other endocrine-related disorders. Clinical dilemmas to be addressed include the practical management of type 2 diabetes, thyroid dysfunction and use of ultrasound, low bone mineral density and osteoporosis, evaluation for cortisol excess, androgens in women, how the new ATP guidelines will affect cardiovascular risk stratification, hyperparathyroidism, and management of the post-bariatric surgery patient. Other key areas include cutting-edge topics such as the gut microbiome and advances in the understanding of diabetes and obesity.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES• Describe the impact of recent clinical trials and guidelines on clinical care
of patients with diabetes, including how to incorporate new agents• Explain the potential impact of exercise on mortality and exercise
dysfunction in diabetes• Describe how genetic predisposition and environmental triggers contribute
to the development of type 2 diabetes• Recognize the newest clinical trial data on diabetes outcomes with statins,
omega 3 fatty acids and basal insulin, as well as anti-inflammatory agents• Discuss the most recent diagnostic and management strategies for
hyperparathyroidism• State the risks and benefits of osteoporosis therapies, including how to
manage premenopausal osteoporosis, and when to consider stopping therapy
• Outline the available evidence regarding androgens in women • Discuss recent developments in obesity therapies including the key issues
in the care of post-bariatric surgery patients • Discuss the use of the latest clinical evidence to assist in the diagnosis,
evaluation and management of endogenous hypercortisolism • Describe major changes in paradigms for cholesterol treatment to reduce
cardiovascular risk, including new guidelines • Identify relevant clinical issues in pregnancy and thyroid disease, and
understand recent data in management of thyroid disorders including thyroid cancer
