My scope doesn’t adjust far enough

There’s a very common problem with airguns and firearms. Once a scope is mounted, it doesn’t have enough adjustment to get you on target at the range you want to shoot.

What distance are you shooting?A scope is usually mounted somewhat higher

than the bore of the gun. To get on target, the internal optics must be angled down to intersect the line of the bore. At distances closer than 10 yards (30 feet), this can be very hard to do. If you can’t adjust your scope to shoot inside your garage—where you have just 18 feet of distance—that’s the reason. You can solve this problem by drawing a sighting mark on every target that’s several inches higher than where you want to hit, and sight on that. You’ll then be able to use the same scope when you have longer distances, such as 10 yards and farther.

Barrels that "droop"Many airguns have barrels that are pointed

slightly downward compared to the tops of their receivers, where the scope is mounted. These are known as droopers. This makes it more difficult to align the scope with the bore line, and the arced trajectory of the pellet amplifies that. It’s often impossible to align a scope well enough to hit your intended target when this happens. One way to test this is to see if you can use the open sights on the gun (if it has them) to hit the target. If so, the gun is a drooper for sure.

The solution is to either place thin shims under the rear of the scope tube—between the bottom of the rear ring and the scope tube. Thin plastic, like that from a two-liter soda bottle, or the aluminum from a soda can cut to fit on the ring and the scope is laid on top. Then, the scope cap is fastened. But if you use shims, they must be thin or the scope tube may be dented. A better solution is to use an adjustable scope mount that moves the scope even more than shims.

Sometimes, a gun will shoot higher than the sights can adjust or too far to one side or the other. An adjustable scope mount is the best solution for all of these, provided it can adjust to the sides.

Even if you can adjust a scope up high enough to hit the target with the scope knobs, most scopes cannot hold their zero when adjusted too high. The same is true when they’re adjusted too far to the right. So, adjustable scope mounts can get the scope’s adjustments back into the range where the scope can hold its zero.

Scopes are wonderful sights that increase the precision of any airgun, but they must be correctly mounted and adjusted to work.
