Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon has been awarded The Sandford Award for Heritage Education 2010, in recognition of the quality of education delivered at the museum. The Sandford Award for Heritage Education is given annually by the Heritage Education Trust to historic and cultural sites across the UK, recognising quality and excellence in educational services and facilities. Currently, around 200 historic sites across the UK hold the award – including historic houses, museums, galleries and gardens. The Learning Team at Locomotion offers a core programme of educational activities for pre-booked school groups, working to the National Curriculum at Key Stages 1, 2 and 3. Children are able to enjoy activities which allow them to explore a range of topics - from our region’s key role in the development of the railways, to the science of movement, energy, envi- ronment and more. In addition, the museum also offers programmes for Key Stage 4 pupils, including ASDAN employ- ability workshops. Locomotion is currently the only museum in the North East offering this day release programme, which is designed to help young people develop transfer- able skills which will help them progress in the world of work. Steve Davies, Director of the National Railway Museum, said, “This jewel in the regional cultural crown has now received further recognition for the quality of its educational programme through the Sandford Award.” Councillor Eunice Huntington, Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities and member of the Locomotion board, said, “I am absolutely delighted that Locomotion has won this award. A tremendous amount of effort been made and this is an achievement of the highest standard, which a great number of people have benefited from. I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more. The Learning Team at Locomotion should be very proud.” Footballers are being given the opportunity to experience a 6-a-side football league at Sunnydale Leisure Centre, when a free football cup competition will take place to determine the best team in the area. The cup will be held for players of a variety of standards, from com- petitive teams wanting to prove their skills, and for first timers who just want to take part and enjoy the experience. Any standard of teams are welcome from FA 11-a-side teams, company teams, work friends and casual friends and the cup will be completely free of charge, as it is being supported by Soccersixes.net. Small-sided football leagues are the fastest growing sport in the UK and it has recently being revealed that a regular kick-about is better for your health than lifting weights! The kicking, twisting, turning and shorts sprints in a high energy game are better for your heart, health and building muscles say the experts. Study Chief, Professor Pete Krustrup, of Copenhagen University commented, “Our research shows that soccer is a versatile and intense form of exercise” The cup competition will take place on Sunday 27th February and teams will play a minimum of three 20 minute games. The winning team will not only be the champions within the area, but will also be invited to a national cup to determine the best team in the small-sided league network. It is easy to enter and teams can register by emailing info@soccersixes. net or by calling 07890 681066. Sir Berkeley at the Tanfield Railway in June 2010; picture courtesy of the Vintage Carriages Trust.

Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon and the Vintage Carriages Trust are delighted to announce that 0-6-0 saddletank locomotive Sir Berkeley will be one of the museum’s operating loco-motives over the coming season.Built in 1890 by Manning Wardle & Company at their Boyne Engine Works in Leeds, MW 1210 was supplied to Logan & Hemingway, a firm of en-gineering contractors who worked mainly on railway construction. The locomotive was put to work on several construc-tion projects, including the building of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (later to be the Great Central Railway). Its last railway contract was in 1930, when it went south to the Wiltshire/Somerset border to work on the GWR Westbury and Frome

Cut-Offs.In 1935, Logan & Hemingway went into liquidation, and MW 1210 was sold to the Cranford Ironstone Company of Kettering, where it received the nameplates Sir Berkeley from a scrapped Manning Wardle engine.Sir Berkeley’s work at Cranford consisted of hauling loaded ore wagons from the quarry face to the storage sidings, or from the storage sidings to the LMS interchange sidings. At the end of 1957, however, Cranford Ironstone acquired a different locomotive to replace Sir Berkeley, and the locomotive became redundant, except for occasional duties as a stand-in. With its days as a commercially useful engine coming to an end, the locomotive was formally retired in 1963.The locomotive was bought

in 1964 by Roger Cromble-holme, and taken to the Worth Valley Railway. After being restored to service, Sir Berkeley took part in the 1968 BBC Television production of The Railway Children. After the expiry of its boiler certificate, the locomotive was bought by the Vintage Carriages Trust. The locomotive has since then travelled extensively in both the UK and abroad, with visits including British Steel Scunthorpe, the East Anglian Railway Museum, the Dutch National Railway Museum and the Middleton Railway at Leeds.Sir Berkeley will move to Locomotion during April, and will see regular use on the museum’s 1km running line. For more information on the steaming schedule, contact the museum on 01388 777999 or visit www.nrm.org.uk/locomotion.

Garden Guild AGMThe Shildon Gardeners Guild is holding their annual general meeting on

Sunday 27th February at 11.30am at the Guild HQ in Civic Hall Square.

Assault on police officerA teenage who struck a police officer has been ordered by Bishop Auckland Magistrates Court to pay £100 in compensation.Lorraine Shaw, 18 of Maple Avenue, Shildon admitted the assault, stating that she hit the officer on 24th January causing swelling to a cheek.

Callum Terry said in mitigation that Shaw had “reacted badly” to police arriving at her home but has since realised “she was completely wrong”.Shaw was also given a 12 month community order with supervision and ordered to pay £40 court costs.

AAP gets talkingThe Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Part-nership (AAP) is inviting residents looking to get together and talk about their neighbourhood to do just that at Good Conver-sations.The Who Wants to be a Millionaire style event will give the community the chance to raise any issues and discuss any concerns. Two sessions will be held at Bishop Auckland Football Stadium on Wednesday, 23rd February from 12.30 to 2.30pm and 6pm to

8pm.These will see attendees responding to questions using an electronic keypad which will be in action to capture audience percep-tions by identifying which comments people feel strongly about. The information gathered will help inform the allocation of resources and funding later this year. AAP Coordinator, Angelina Maddison, said, “This is an opportunity for anyone wanting to have a say on their area to come along

and voice their opinions, share their thoughts and let us know how they feel.“It can sometimes be a bit daunting to get up in front of a group of people so we came up with the game show format to keep things informal and put everyone coming along at ease.”Booking is essential to avoid disappointment. For further information or to book a place, contact a n g e l i n a . m a d d i s o n @durham.gov.uk or 01388 761 563 before Monday 21st February.

Play equipment vandalisedIn the hours of darkness between 31st January and 1st February, play equipment at the Sure Start park was deliberately vandalised. As can be seen from the photograph, the damage is clearly deliberate and sub-stantial force would have been required to crack the plastic, causing over £1,000 worth of damage. The park is extensively used by local children and the exposed sharp edges could cause an horrific injury to a young child.Police are treating this very seriously and are hopeful that someone who may have seen or heard

something at the time of the incident will come forward.

Please contact Shildon police on 0345 60 60 365 with any information.

The slide would have been hit with extensive force to cause this crack in the plastic.

Benefit cheat avoids jailLocal woman Anne-Marie Maughan has narrowly avoided jail time following her trial at Durham Crown Court for falsely claiming benefits between 2005 and 2009.Miss Maughan, 34, of Highland Gardens, Shildon, was overpaid £24,000 worth of benefits including income support, council tax and housing benefit by claiming to be a single parent whilst she had a live in partner.Allthough the claim was initially genuine, her cir-cumstances changed when

her partner moved in. When challenged initially, she denied making false claims and pleaded not guilty to eight charges. However prosecutor Vince Ward told the court that Miss Maughan changed her stance at the eleventh hour and was prepared to make admissions. The new charges are of two counts of failing to notify in a change of circumstances, to which she has pleaded guilty on both charges. She is now making repayments of £90 per month, but it will take 28

years for the full amount to be repaid. In summary, Judge Chistopher Prince said, “The welfare state is not a charity, it’s for the collective benefit and stealing from that fund is despicable.“If not for your five-year-old son, I would be sending you to prison today.”He added that a costs order would be imprac-tical given her circum-stances and imposed a five-month prison sentence suspended for two years, with 250 hours of unpaid work.

Pub site put out to grassA former Shildon trouble spot is to be improved by grassing the area at the request of local residents.Local housing company sbh took over the Jubilee Pub site in the town after it became a magnet for vandalism and anti-social behaviour. The pub was demolished last year to remove the problem and the company has been asking local

people what they would like to happen to the site.Andrew Stephens, Neigh-bourhoods Team Leader said, “We discussed with people living near the site several options and they wanted it made clean and tidy until a permanent decision is made over its future. Residents said they wanted the site to be simply left tidy and have submitted a bid through the

tenant led environmental improvement programme for the work.”“We will have the area grassed and keep the low fence around the site to discourage antisocial behaviour. Long term sbh may consider building new social housing on the site and would consult fully with local residents before undertaking any develop-ment.”

‘Unusual circumstances’At Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court the defend-ant’s solicitor, Mr. Clive Booth, described the circumstances behind his client’s alleged offence as ‘unusual.’ Matters were therefore adjourned until 23rd February in order that further investigations could be made into claims of duress made by Gary Steven Sheel. On 29th January, 23 year-old Sheel had entered the Rakesh Convenience Store in Shildon and stolen two bottles of cider valued at £3.18. On becoming aware of the theft, the shop-owner reported matters to the police and Sheel was

arrested at his home in Freville Street. Sheel told officers that a youth named Jason had threatened him with a knife and demanded that he steal the items on his behalf. The next day, Sheel had gone back to the shop to explain to the owner what had happened and had been led to believe that the charge would be dropped. The police will now have to decide whether or not they believe this version of events and determine their course of action before the case next reaches court. Sheel was released on unconditional bail.

At a recent meeting of Shildon Town Council, the Services and Amenities Committee rejected proposed plans for the erection of office buildings and storage bays at Unit 14, Hackworth Park Industrial Estate, Shildon by Mr. T. Shepherd. The Town Council raised objections to the planning on the basis of environmen-tal issues and the matter

has now been passed to the planning department of Durham County Council for a final decision. The Services and Amenities Committee also heard a request to make changes to the bus stop adjacent to Sunnydale Community College. It is suggested that the bus stop be moved a few metres south of its current location, to be outside of the ‘school keep clear’ markings. Cars parking near to the bus stop prevent

buses completely pulling in allowing passengers to board and alight, and also block traffic from passing on the road.It has been requested that clear box markings be made, creating a cordoned off bus stop which motorists must leave clear. The request is currently under consideration.A grant aid request was accepted by the Resources Committee for the amount of £50 to allow members of the Shildon Youth Group to travel to Newton Aycliffe for youth club activities. The grant will cover transport costs for three mini-bus trips to allow members to partici-pate in sporting activities in Aycliffe on an evening when the Shildon Youth Group is free.

Local GP will not face new murder chargesShildon GP Dr. Howard Martin will not face new murder charges after a recent newspaper interview. Dr. Martin, who is now struck off and living in Pen-maenmawr in Wales was quoted as saying, “I twice helped people die, not because they wanted to

die, but because they had such dreadful suffering.”Families who believed he was responsible for the deaths of their loved ones have demanded a new prosecution since this has come to light.Dr. Martin was cleared six years ago of killing three elderly patients - Frank

Moss, Harry Gittins and Stanley Weldon - after in-vestigation by the Crown Prosecution Service following claims he had helped patients to die.The CPS has since decided there are insufficient new grounds for a new pros-ecution, after studying files from Durham Police.

Barclays Bank in Shildon closes its doors on the 18th of March, when all services will move to the Bishop Auckland branch.MP for Bishop Auckland, Helen Goodman met with representatives from the bank to discuss the situation and has been told the closure will go ahead, but has asked the bank to consider ways of supporting local people who will be particularly disadvantaged by the change.Helen said, “It is an annoying decision and is a

tremendous blow to lose one of the high street banks in Shildon.“When the top people in Barclays made record profits and paid themselves bonuses in 2010 of £2.3 billion, it is galling that local people who have been hit hardest by the economic downturn and government cuts, will have to fork out money to travel 3 miles to their 'local' branch.”In a meeting with Barclays, Helen has urged them to support local people

affected by the decision. She said, “I have asked Barclays to consider ways in which they can support people affected by the decision, particularly at a time when the most vulnerable are needing sound financial assistance and the government has already withdrawn Financial Inclusion Funding from Citizens Advice Bureaus. “I have urged them to look at practical ways in which they can provide assistance to local credit unions.”

Bailey brothers bailedBrian Stewart Bailey, aged 49 of Auckland Terrace, Shildon, entered no pleas to the four charges presented when he recently appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court. The court heard that during the late evening of 29th January, officers were called to Kilburn Street where they saw the defendant walk towards his brother’s house, bang on the windows and door and then kick a Vauxhall Corsa which was parked close by. On approaching him, officers noticed that he was

carrying a six inch knife. Martyn Allan Bailey, aged 43, then appeared at the door of is home also bran-dishing a knife. Both had to be restrained, which involved the use of a pepper spray. The brothers appeared separately in court and will return there on 6th April after matters were adjourned. The two were released on bail, conditions of which include not contacting witnesses and not entering The Locomotive Public House.

Help young footballers go to BarcelonaIn July 2012 a squad of 20 boys are desperately hoping travel to Spain to play in the international football tournament, The Barcelona Cup.Whilst there, they will represent not only their club - Bishop Auckland St. Mary’s Juniors FC – but their hometown, the north east region and ultimately their country, in a pres-tigious tournament at one of the hubs of European football. There is a significant barrier in the way of boys’ dreams though – they need to raise £13,500 to be able to make the trip. The squad and backroom staff of the

club have been busy raising as much money as possible, recently completing two ‘bag packs’, with much more in the pipeline. The squad includes many youngsters from around our area, with Shildon lads Matthew Hunt, James Lupton, Tony Hindmarch and Daniel Winterburn especially keen to go. The lads and their teammates are appealing to local businesses to sponsor a player from their own area, or sponsor some of the many items of kit the club needs for the trip – travel bags, polo shirts and tracksuits to name but a few.

Shildon Grey Horse match reportTop of the table Houghton were the visitors to Shildon and manager Dougie Grant had 16 players at his disposal. On a heavy pitch the Grey Horse started the brighter in a changed 3-5-2 formation. New signing Jason Rothwell started well in midfield and was unlucky when a nicely paced through ball found Dougie Grant who was closed down quickly to have a half chance snaffled out.The five men across the middle seemed to be working well as Neil Wilson and John Myers both created chances as the game progressed. On 25 minutes it was 1-0.

A nice pass into the feet of forward Dougie Grant was controlled well, and he created space for himself sending goalkeeper and defender the wrong way before rolling the ball home.Ten minutes later and the wide men linked up to make it 2-0.Dave Bulleyment skipped past the full back and his pull back was met first time by Pat Bowtell who cracked the ball home from 25 yards.Forward Stephen Weldon was unlucky not to make it 3-0 right on halftime but he ended up getting crowded out in the box.The second half saw a change in fortunes for

the home side. First a mis-kicked shot couldn’t have been placed any better as Houghton grabbed a lifeline to make it 2-1.This spurred the league leaders on and some poor marking and failure to clear their lines saw the Grey Horse pegged back again to make it 2-2.A few more chances came and went at both ends and Marty Joyce was particu-larly unlucky not to nick all three points at the death after some good approach play by Harry Thompson.A final score of 2-2, but the Grey Horse were dis-appointed after a good halftime lead.

Shildon stay 3rd in the league after 4-1 win against StokesleyShildon AFC entertained much-improved Stokesley at Dean Street on Saturday 12th February, a side who in the last two weeks had beaten league favourites Spennymoor Town as well as Billingham Synthonia in the 3rd Round of the League Cup.Shildon started the more positive with the first chance falling to Lee Chapman on 8 minutes. On 16 minutes, Stokesley's Brian Close blasted over from close range.Shortly afterwards a Chris Hughes ball found Sonny Andrews, who had a one-on-one with keeper Robert Dean, but his shot ballooned over. The visitors took the lead on 25 minutes when Keith Finch brought down

Anthony Hume in the box for a penalty which was converted by Levent Yalcin.Shildon went in at half time disappointed to be a goal behind.Shildon's manager must have said some harsh words at half time as the Railwaymen were a different team when they re-emerged for the 2nd half. After Chris Hughes headed just over, the home side equalised with a well taken goal on 54 minutes. Paul Buzzeo, recently signed from West Allotment Celtic set up Lee Chapman who rounded two defenders and blasted home.Just after the hour Stokesley should have taken the lead, but a shot from six yards out somehow hit the bar.

Shildon went ahead on 73 minutes with some scintil-lating all-round play. Sam Garvie to Lee Chapman to Chris Hughes who fired in from close range.Another fine goal followed only two minutes later. Chapman rounded two players then squared the ball to Steven Johnson who also beat two players and hammered home for 3 - 1.On 88 minutes it was 4 - 1 when a corner from Craig Price was sliced into his own net by Brian Close.Shildon’s Chairman, Brian Burn, would like to convey a big ‘thank you’ to all of the people who turned up at the ground on Saturday morning to help secure the poles and net behind East View Terrace. It was very much appreciated.

A meeting is to take place for any Shildon pubs who would like to join the Shildon Friendly Pool League. The meeting will take place on Monday 21st February from 8pm in the Locomotive pub on Byerley Road.

Any team that would like to join but cannot make the meeting can also ring Elizabeth or Shane on 01388 778103 or 07980381883 for more information.Any new players wishing to join a team are also welcome to go along to the meeting.
