    1/11

CURVE/SEAWOLVES SERIES: The Curve and SeaWolves are meeting or the rst time this season in Altoona and will

play one another a total o 23 times (11 times in Altoona). The Curve own the all-time matchups with Erie by one

game, 129-128, and went 11-7 versus the Wolves in Curve, Pa. during 2011.

FOR ALTOONA: RHP Mike Colla will take the ball or P.J. Forbes and the Curve in the season-opener tonight at Peoples

Natural Gas Field. Colla, who did not start in any o his rst three years in the Pirates organization since being drated

in 08, made 23 starts or the Curve a year ago en route to a 3.70 ERA (ninth-best in the Eastern League). He also had a

respectable strikeout-to-walk ratio o nearly 2.80-to-1. Ater his regular season was nished, Colla nished up his 2011in the Arizona Fall League, where he recorded two saves while appearing in 11 games. In addition to having the ninth-

best ERA In the E.L. in 2011, Colla also had the leagues th-best WHIP and the third-best batting average against or a

starter. Last season against the Howlers, Colla was 1-1 with a 4.12 ERA in our games (three starts). For more on Colla,

    see page two.

FOR ERIE: LHP Jay Voss returns to Erie in 2012 and opposes Colla in the Opening Night tilt in Curve, Pa. This is Voss

third go-around with Erie ater spending 33 games there as a reliever in 2010 and 19 games as a starter on the lake

in 2011. Last season, Voss went 9-7 with a 3.67 ERA or the SeaWolves, a campaign that earned him Eries Pitcher o

the Year accolades. The southpaws earned run average checked in as eighth-best in the Eastern League, and he did

an admirable job keeping runners o the basepaths, allowing just 10.61 per nine innings, the third-best mark among

league starters. Originally drated by the Florida Marlins in the eighth round o 2007, Voss was shipped to the Tigers in

exchange or Nate Robinson and cash considerations on March 30, 2010.

OPENING NIGHT TIDBITS: Altoona owns a career record o 5-8 on Opening Day in their 13-year history. This will be

the rst time that the Curve have opened the season at home versus the Erie and the club will be searching or its rstseason-opening win over the Wolves. Erie has won all three Opening Day meetings between the two clubs (2001,

2009 and 2011) and all three o those games were played in Eries Jerry Uht Park. The last time the Curve won on

Opening Day was April 8, 2010 when they deeated Harrisburg at then-named BCB, 5-1.

FIRSTNIGHT JITTERS?: The Curve have had just one Opening Day starter earn a win since 2004 with Mike Crotta

picking up the win as a starter in 2010. Last season, Michael Dubee suered the loss in relie in Erie as the Curve lost

    in walk-o ashion, 3-2.

FAMILIAR FACES: 11 o the 25 players on the Altoona Curve Opening Day roster spent signicant time with the Curve

    in 2011.

BIG SHOES TO FILL: Outelder Robbie Grossman joins the Altoona Curve in 2012 and will patrol a centereld let

vacant by Starling Marte, who begins the year in Triple-A Indianapolis. Marte let some big shoes to ll or Grossman

ater winning the Eastern League Rookie o the Year award and the league batting title in 2011. Grossman was no

slouch in 2011 either, being the rst minor leaguer to walk 100+ times and score 100+ runs in a single-season since2004 (Nick Swisher, Sacramento River Cats). He was also named the Pirates Minor League Player o the Year.

ELEVYS IS IN THE BUILDING: 3B Elevys Gonzalez makes the jump to Double-A or the rst time in his young career

ater leading the Pirates minor league system with 83 RBI in 2011. He batted .322 in 126 games or the Marauders

while mashing 36 doubles, six triples and six home runs.

GETTING THEIR CITIZENSHIP: A good chunk o Altoonas Opening Day roster spent the rst two days ater Spring

Training in the City o Brotherly Love as they travelled to Philly with the Pirates or the pair o exhibition games at Citi-

zens Bank Park. Tim Alderson, Ryan Beckman,Jarek Cunningham, Matt Curry,Jeremy Farrell, Robbie Grossman,

Kris Johnson, Andrew Lambo and Tony Sanchez all made the trip beore making their way to Curve, Pa.

OPENING DAY IN THE BURGH: The Pittsburgh Pirates announced their Opening Day roster on Wednesday and host

the Philadelphia Phill ies Thursday aternoon at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. O the 25 players on the active roster, 10 o

them (Pedro Alvarez, Matt Hague,Josh Harrison,Jared Hughes, Andrew McCutchen, Nate McLouth, Alex Presley,

Jose Tabata, Neil Walker and Tony Watson) played or the Altoona Curve. When Hague takes the eld or the rsttime in a Pirates uniorm hell become the 91st player to go rom Altoona to

The Show in the clubs 14-year history.

THE LUMBER CO.?: The Curve lineup should be quite procient at getting on

base and pounding out hits with some o the returning repower as well as

some o the new additions. Ramon Cabrera (.343, Won FSL batting crown),

Elevys Gonzalez ( .322) and Adalberto Santos (.314) all paced the Maraud-

ers last season and all three are on the Curves Opening Day roster.

BRINGING BALANCE TO THE FORCE: A quick look at the Curve position

players will tell you that it should be quite a balanced lineup or P.J. Forbes

to play with in 2012. There are six players that hit exclusively right-handed

while there are seven that either bat let-handed or switch hit.

EARLY RISERS: The April 5th opener is the earliest that the Curve haveopened a season at home since 2008, when the team opened up with Read-

ing on April 3rd. The April 3rd start date is the earliest any season in the

teams 13+ year history and has happened twice (also occurred April 3, 2003).
