I
Preface These proceedings contain papers which were presented at the 12th Canadian Conference on Building Science and Technology held in Montreal, Quebec, on May 6, 7 and 8, 2009. The conference was hosted by the National Building Envelope Council (NBEC) and organised by the Quebec Building Envelope Council (QBEC). The objective of the Conference is to provide a forum to present, discuss and share relevant building science knowledge and experience for those directly involved in the building industry both nationally and internationally. The inaugural Canadian Conference on Building Science and Technology was held in London, Ontario in March of 1982. The conferences continued biannually until the 6th conference in 1992. These six first conferences were organised by Eric Burnett and Vlad Stritesky. In March of 1997, the conference was re-energized under the impetus of Hitesh Doshi and the 8th conference was presented under the auspices of the Ontario Building Envelope Council (OBEC) in February 2001, by John Straube. This conference has since been presented by the National Building Envelope Council, traveling across the country: hosted by BCBEC in May 2003 in Vancouver, by BECOR in May 2005 in Ottawa and by ABEC in March 2007 in Banff. The 12th conference is presented by QBEC. In the fall of 2007, the Scientific Committee issued a Call for abstracts that was distributed to the Canadian building science community, reaching all BEC’s, universities and building science consultants and was also distributed internationally. By May 2008, 110 abstracts had been received, covering a wide array of issues within the field of building science and building technology. The scientific committee reviewed the abstracts and selected the 57 papers contained within these proceedings. These papers were chosen to provide information on the current activities in research and development, professional practice and field experience. The papers underwent a peer review process supervised by each of the 15 session chairs. Each paper was reviewed by 2 ou 3 anonymous reviewers. Comments were taken into account in finalizing the papers for inclusion in these proceedings. The proceedings are presented in two books, one for each day of the conference. The first book covers three parallel tracks and nine sessions. The second book contains the papers of six sessions grouped in two parallel tracks. The conference was accompanied with a trade show featuring 29 kiosks from different product manufacturers and associations. The organisers of this event were very proud to be the first CCBST with bilingual documentation, website, and abstracts, as well as simultaneous translation. Another first was that the event aimed to be an “eco-responsible” event and followed Green measures to minimize its impact on the environment. The publication of these papers does not indicate responsibility for, nor acceptance of, the technical accuracy or content suitability by NBEC, QBEC, the session chairs or the sponsoring organisations. Also, these proceedings do not represent the opinions or beliefs

of the organising committee members, scientific committee members, nor the companies or organisations employing these members. Each paper solely represents the research ideas, perspectives and beliefs of the authors(s). Publication in these proceedings ensures that all members of our building science and building technology community are able to review and discuss the issues presented in an open forum, in keeping with the original objectives of this conference and NBEC.

The journey began after the official announcement on March 22, 2007 at the 11th
Canadian Conference on Building Science and Technology hosted by ABEC in Banff,Alberta – the next conference will be held in May 2009 in Montreal! Two years toorganise a conference and gather a bunch of papers – no big deal if we start right awaywe said, right? Well, it took all of those two years of hard work and a devoted anddedicated team to accomplish this mighty task! And despite the frustration at times whenoverwhelmed with deadlines and juggling between our volunteer work, our jobs and ourfamilies, the feeling that remains is a sense of pride and accomplishment and a uniquebond that will remain within us all for well beyond the two days of conference. Duringthis time, the question was often asked – why volunteer two years of your time to take onsuch a huge task? … we finally figured it out, and hope that others will as well.

for example: - Choosing products and services from local suppliers as much as possible; - Diminishing the event’s energy consumption; - Printing necessary material, including these proceedings, on FSC certified, recycled
paper; After the event, the total equivalent GHG emissions were calculated in order to have a better idea of the emissions actually generated. The GHG generated by the event were then compensated by planting trees through an accredited program: ‘Projet Carbone Boréal’. For both the zero waste and carbon neutrality objectives, the cooperation of the exhibitors and the delegates was necessary. The objectives were therefore communicated to them and their participation solicited. We thank all of them for their efforts. We now challenge the organisers of future conferences to start where we left off and do even better!

Ecoresponsible event / Évènement écoresponsable For this 12th Canadian Conference on Building Science and Technology, the National Building Envelope Council of Canada and the Quebec Building Envelope Council wanted to organise an exemplary sustainable event by implementing measures to meet zero waste and carbon neutrality objectives. Some examples of the measures implemented to reduce the amount of waste included: - Selecting a recycled/reusable/recyclable bag made locally instead of the regular
conference attaché; - Minimizing the number of printed material and “giveaways”; - For the meals, favoring bulk containers rather than individual containers (drinks,
butter, sugar and milk, etc.). We also made choices to minimize carbon emissions and tend toward carbon neutrality,

Keynote Sustainability and local identity - from buildings to cities
Abstract Identifying local potentials for resources savings, comfort improvement, energy efficiency or energy harvesting can support a building design to gain a local identity. Using project examples like the Zollverein School in Essen by SANAA, the Manitoba Hydro Building in Winnipeg by KPMB, the Hostler Student Center in Beirut by VJAA or the Masdar carbon neutral city by Foster, the lecture explains the approaches and benefits of project concepts reflecting their "Genius Loci" in respect of a sustainable living. Matthias Schuler Matthias Schuler is Adjunct Professor of Environmental Technology. He has held the position of Lecturer in Architecture at the GSD since 2001, teaching courses in sustainability and climate engineering.
In 1992, Schuler founded Transsolar in Stuttgart, Germany, now a leading provider of consulting services on developing sustainable design strategies for buildings. The firm has a strong technical basis, and commonly performs highly sophisticated computational simulations (e.g., thermal, lighting) for concept validations. Schuler has worked with a large number of well-known architects in the field on high-profile projects. Among others, he has collaborated on projects by the following: Herzog/de Meuron (Parrish Art Museum, Topeak Towers); Stephen Holl (Linked Hybrid, Herning Art Museum); Behnisch, Behnisch and Partners (Nord LB, Skylofts, etc.); Jean Nouvel (Musee de la Mer, Philharmonie Paris, Louvre Abu Dhabi); Gehry Design Architects (Novartis, Museum of Tolerance, World Trade Center Performing Arts Center, etc.); Murphy/Jahn (New Bangkok International Airport, Posttower, etc.) and OMA (Center for Performing Arts, Museum Plaza). His design solutions are always innovative, and backed up by massive analytical simulation studies that confirm their effectiveness. Recently his activities have moved beyond the building scale and he is now working on energy and comfort solutions at the urban master plan level, like the carbon-neutral Masdar development in Abu Dhabi in conjunction with Foster + Partners.
Schuler plays a leadership role in the GSD’s expansion into areas of sustainability in the coming years and will initially coordinate and lead a team whose overall target is the integration of sustainability and design practice in architecture, urban design and landscape architecture education, spanning from cross disciplinary introductory lectures to core and options studios involvement.
Schuler received the Diplom-Ingenieur degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Stuttgart. In addition to teaching at the GSD, he has also taught at the University of Stuttgart and University of Limerick.
