Lessons for New Quilters

Quilting Fundamental

Jessica Darling Workshop & Lecture Lecture - Progress over Progression

Friday, October 16 6 - 8 $10

The longer I quilt, the more strongly I feel about enjoying the creative and learning process. In this special event, I'm unearthing some of my earliest

quilts, and we will travel on a visual timeline together. I hope you will be inspired by the difference in my early works and what I'm presently composing, and maybe will help you to also appreciate your own process!

Color Party Workshop Saturday, October 17 10 - 3 $50

Color Party is Jessica’s way of teaching intuitive color choices for modern quilting and it is a blast! She’ll tell you why a signature block is vital to your color exploration and comprehension. You’ll study her signature block - the sawtooth star. Jessica chooses

this block because even though the block is consistent, the shape of the block can change depending on the values of the colors that you use. You will pre cut fabric before class, but the block building is unplanned. We are very excited to have Jessica show you a different

way to create color stories and shadow play in your quilts.

The Top Ten reasons to get a Higher Education

at The Bernina Connection

#10) Because it just doesn’t get any higher than soaring creativity.

#9) No waiting in long lines at Target for school supplies, you’ll find them all

on the way to the classroom.

#8) There are no final exams, just life-long learning opportunities.

#7) Bernina. Connection. Teachers. Need I say more?

#6) Math involves quarter-inches and fat-quarters. Calculus is optional.

#5) The most important number this year is 13!! Our 13th anniversary

celebrations (11/6 & 11/7) will prove how smart (and lucky!) you already

are because you come here.

#4) The classroom (and the entire school grounds) are renovated,

rejuvenated and really … really cool.

#3) The new Bernina Q20 sit down long-arm is an education in efficiency.

#2) Recess is much more colorful (and soft!) than that old black-top you

used to skin your knees on.

And the #1 reason to get a Higher Education at The Bernina Connection?

DO YOU HAVE A “DON’T DO” LIST? Larry Delceg – Service Department Manager

A few days ago a friend of mine opened his smartphone and showed me his “do” list. It was almost six pages long! Your list may not be that extensive, but I’m willing to bet that you have one. It may be on a scrap of paper, in a notebook, on your computer or phone, or just in your head. Lists have become a common denominator that keep our lives functioning. However, have you ever considered keeping a “DON’T DO” list? At first this idea may seem parental. However, a “Don’t Do” list can be a successful method of keeping things OFF of our do list. And that can save both time and frustration! So what does this have to do with sewing? Here are three “DON’T DO” Tech Tips designed to keep you happy and sewing: DON’T thread your machine with the presser foot down. The

thread will not fully enter the tension disks, resulting in looping on the bottom of your fabric. When the presser foot is up, the disks open, allowing the thread to fully lay in proper position. This “Don’t Do” will save you an unnecessary trip to our service department.

DON’T use canned air. It will blow lint deeper into your machine. When we perform service, it is usually quite apparent which owners use canned air, because lint has become packed tightly into the deepest cavities of the machine’s mechanisms. Use a set of mini-vac nozzles (which we keep in stock), to instead extract the lint. This “Don’t Do” can also save you an unnecessary trip to our service department.

DON’T mix thread types or brands. If Aurifil is on the bobbin, don’t put a spool of Gutterman on the top. If Mettler is on the bobbin, don’t put Superior on the top. And never mix thread weights. If Aurifil 2 ply 50 is on the bobbin, then use that on the top also. Why? Mixing brands and weights very noticeably effects tensions and stitch quality. (Please note that an exception to this rule is embroidery, in which we recommend Isacord on the top, and Bottom Line on the bobbin.) This “Don’t Do” will help give your projects a professional look.

There are other “Don’t Do” items that we can mention in a future column, but these three are a good start. We hope that knowing what NOT to do will keep your “Do List” shorter,

providing you with more time to enjoy your sewing hobby!

Looking for Adventurous Sewers! We have a great group, called Quilters Jackpot and you are invited to join this group that meets the first Saturday of each month. The fun is to create one 12½” block to contribute to a quilt. (Yes, you can create more!) What do you learn? Color theory and coordination of fabrics, skill building, learning new block designs as well as learning from other creative people. The best part: After joining the group and participating

for three months, you are eligible to receive ALL the blocks for that month and win the Jackpot! You will have the

blocks already made by your seam mates and you are ready to sew! Come to see and share ideas, challenges and fun times

with others!
