Last year, fun was had by all at the 9th annual 4-Day 400 Mile Sale across Kentucky! Hundreds of vendors, shop owners and yard sale folks made a little money and met some really nice people. We have compiled some of these stories in this year’s “400 Mile Sale” newsletter. Also posted are the T-shirt and 400 Mile Sale winners as well as our Grand Prize Winner of the FREE tank of gas. A SHOPPER’S STORY

“We met so many interesting people along our journey that I decided they were the real treasures and took their pictures and wrote down their stories. Along the roads, we met a classmate in Hazel, Kentucky we had not seen in years. The proceeds from her sales were going to aid her sister-in-law in paying her bills while she is battling breast cancer. We met an adorable little girl named Lily with a lemonade stand that would be giving her earnings to her Aunt Marie too. In Draffenville, Kentucky at our last stop along this exciting adventure, Vicky, found a college classmate she had not seen in 37 years!

So, for us, this trip yielded much more than a Volkswagen filled to the brim with all sorts of goodies. It gave us time together, laughs, and smiles from strangers that became friends. We even had to call Triple A when the battery on the VW went dead after its juice was drained from the GPS, two cell phones, and digital camera that were left plugged in during our overnight stay in Paris, TN. Next year we will be ‘Ready to Roll and Unplugged’.” - Elise Myers, Gray Georgia and Vicky Salmon, Hendersonville Tennessee

Another priceless treasure…One shopper from Clifty Kentucky said “I found a little wooden table and chairs for my son. The older gentleman who sold it to me told me about how it had been in their family for years and his grandchildren used to set at it. He said they almost decided not to sell it! I am sure glad they did because my son loves it! He is 18 months old and I think it makes him feel big to have his own table. I know it is something he will enjoy for years!”

SHOPPER RESPONSES

“There were a total of 8 of us on our trip in one vehicle. Had a great time! ... We will be back through every year. Thank you so much for putting this huge event on. It gives us and the kids something to look forward to every year.” - 2nd year shopper from Joelton, Tennessee shopped from Hopkinsville to Edmonton

“I am the YARD SALE QUEEN - ask anyone who knows me. I like the items that others think about throwing away - believe me. I never throw things away. Meeting folks along the way and taking photos are two of my favorite things besides finding the treasures.” - Shopper from Greensburg, Kentucky

“We had a great time as always.” - Shoppers from Bloomfield, Indiana who have attended the 400 Mile Sale for the past three years.

“Love meeting people! My husband and I make vacations around yard saling and this year just topped off all our other experiences. Most people were willing to dicker on prices. Come home worn out but definitely worth the time. I’ve really enjoyed following the 400 Mile Sale on Facebook also! We finally found a t-shirt. What a great bonus along the way! Thanks guys for a great job this year!!!” - Laura & Tommy Curreri from Winchester, Kentucky traveled from Maysville to Campbellsville, staying at French Quarter Inn in Maysville.

“When my husband and I first saw the cow bell which was near Harrodsburg on our way west which we were like 200 miles into our trip, my husband passed on it. We traveled all the way to Bowling Green, stopping at various sales and each time he said he wished he would have gotten the bell. The next day on our way home, we were on the look out for the home where the cow bell was, hoping it was still there. To our surprise and excitement, it was and we did purchase it this time for the asking price of $20.” - First year shoppers from Franklin Furnace, Ohio.

“Absolutely had a fantastic time! Enjoy seeing it grow and grow each year. Wish my health was better so I could go all day each day of the sale to cover more ground. LOL! - From Grand Rivers, has shopped every year since 2006.

“Me and my sister thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Every person along the way who had a sale was so nice and enjoyable to visit with. Kentucky is a great place to vacation!” - Two shoppers from Marquette, Kansas who shopped from Paducah to Russellville.

“Even though it was raining and cold on the first day and we had to stop and buy my husband a coat, we had a wonderful time. Everyone we met was friendly and very nice. We love it and can’t wait for next year.” - Shopper from Garrison, Kentucky who spent the night at the Best Western in Campbellsville and got a great deal on a sad iron trivet.

GREAT STORY!

As I was browsing through sale items, I found a dirty toilet and are

you ready for this...someone’s false teeth! The sign on the table read,

“make an offer”.- Shopper from Cadiz, Kentucky

SHOPPER RESPONSES (continued)“I loved our trip to Kentucky. It was beautiful along the route. Everyone was so nice. I was kind of getting sad because I had not seen any Betty Boop items until Saturday afternoon. That table full of Betty Boop items made my trip GREAT!! I wish I could have bought it all. The lady I bought it from said she was from Georgia. It was a sad story about the way it came to pass about her selling it. I just want to thank her again. Thank you!” - First time shopper from Moweqaua, Illinois. Started in Paducah and stayed at the Super 8 in Cadiz and in Bowling Green.

“We have done several of the long yard sales and always enjoy meeting new people and seeing new places. It was a bit cold (extreme) this year but we bought a sweatshirt to get us started. We enjoyed it and would definitely do it again... Two cars with two adults each car. Wonderful time. Loved every minute of it. Met a lot of nice people.” - First time shoppers from Murphy, North Carolina.

“We will do the other half next year - We are only able to do 2 days and I-65 is our route down or back. People are so friendly and we were even offered pizza at one stop where the owners were finishing up their meal! I really appreciated the several thoughtful people who provided Port-a-Potties!” - Second time shoppers from Nineveh, Indiana.

“Enjoyed the whole yard sale trip. We will come back next year!” - First time shoppers from Beaver Dam, KY and spent the night at Federal Grove B&B in Auburn Kentucky.

“Really enjoyed our trip. As with every trip we go on the people we meet are what makes it great and the people we met while in Kentucky this year were some of the best!” - First time shoppers from Circleville Ohio who shopped from Maysville to Campbellsville. “This was our first trip and we had such a great time! We met so many nice, friendly people! It was as though everyone were having a party! So many different personalities and lifestyles and all so friendly and fun! Everyone seemed open to talking and bargaining with their wares! It was really pleasant! If they were willing to bargain (no matter how little) I bought, if they did not, I didn’t! It was such fun!” - First time shoppers from Henderson, Kentucky.

• “The ‘Boss’ (our 5 year old granddaughter) is shown with her treasures from the sale. Sophia earned money to shop the 68-80 sale by feeding the fish in our pond. Yes, we paid her top dollar! She purchased a bike with training wheels (now grandma has to repaint it purple), baby dolls, books, Barbie skates and the coolest Daniel Boone/coon skin hat! She fell asleep on the way home Sunday... still wearing the hat...too precious. When her parents picked her up here Sunday night, she asked them if she could go back to Kentucky with “Maw” & “Poppy”. Looks like she’s hooked! Thanks for another great 400 Mile Sale” - The Nugent’s from Louisiana.

“Wonderful time. Loved every minute of it. Met a lot of nice people.” - First time shoppers from Louisville Mississippi shopped from Sharpe to Glasgow and spent the night at Hampton Inn in Murray and Bowling Green. “I had a great time shopping for bargains and if it is the Good Lord’s Will, I will participate in it again next year!!!” “Friday was so cool and wonderful. The weather was perfect the whole time. We had a dead battery along the way. It took a while for someone to stop. The first person said let me turn around and never came back. The next man and his wife helped us and then here came another man and his wife and had us going in no time. We love the people and the Sale. Hope to be back next year. Need to come sell but it is so much fun to come buy. I wish you had more T-shirts for sale along the way. I have tried for three years to get a shirt and have never found one.” – These shoppers from Merkel Texas have shopped the 400 Mile Sale for the past three years! This year they went from Paris, Puryear, Hazel, Murray, Paducah to Bowling Green. “We look forward to the 400 Mile Yard Sale every year! Always have fun and get a lot of great buys!” - Shopper from Scottsville KY who has been attending the 400 Mile Sale every year since 2005.

“Had a great time. Never been to Kentucky before. Love it. Hope next year to get past Bowling Green. Beautiful country. Got to see some Amish people.” – Shoppers from Coushatta LA who stayed this year at Super 8’s in both Cadiz and Bowling Green.

More Port-a-Johns are needed and a few more food vendors, especially in the sections between Bowling Green and Glasgow.

Need more sales to open on Thursday and Sunday for the “early bird shoppers” and those shoppers who want to “shop till they drop”. Please Note: Sunday is always clean-up day. Many people go to church anbd don’t open until noon, if they open at all. But one can still find amazing sales on Sunday as prices continue to go down, down, down.

One shopper from Scenery Hill, Pennsylvania thought the area was “absolutely breathtaking” but sure wishes there were more attractions and special events taking place along the route in conjunction with the Sale. Excellent suggestion! Next year, we will provide a special section of the website dedicated specifically to any and all special events or attractions taking place along the route during the 400 Mile Sale event. Wonder if they knew the Highland Games were happening in Glasgow? And about the Bourbon Trail and Barrel Tour in Lebanon?

RESULTS FROM VENDOR SURVEYSOf the Vendors who completed a survey, total sales averaged $1,091.32 over the 4 days with the largest majority of sales taking place on Saturday.

BUT, as noted in past years, the largest revenue day was Thursday.Average amount made on Thursday was $503.50, $329.49 on Friday, $416.11 on Saturday, and $161.30 on Sunday.

Of those completing a VENDOR SURVEY, 68% set up on Thursday; 91% on Friday; 93% on Saturday; and 31% on Sunday. Only 30% set up ALL FOUR days. 41% set up Thursday thru Saturday; 5% set up Friday thru Sunday; and 14% set up just Friday and Saturday with 3% on Friday only; 3% on Saturday only, 3% on Thursday and Saturday.

32% set up for the first time.42% have participated 5 years or more.Breakdown: 1 year - 32% 2 years - 8% 3 years - 10% 4 years - 10% 5 years - 20% 6 years - 8% 7-9 years - less than 5% each

WHAT SOLD THE BEST THIS YEAR!

Responses varied. Everything from outdoor recreation items such as fishing gear to furniture and children’s clothing. And on Friday, any warm piece of clothing (hats, sweatshirts, winter coats, etc.) was selling like hot cakes when temperatures plummeted into the 50’s after being in the 90’s the day before!

Such high % of new vendors setting up for the first time is a great indicator that

the 400 Mile Sale continues to grow since vendor surveys indicate consistently that once someone has a sale during the 400 Mile Sale, they tend to set up every year

following.

“This was absolutely THE BEST 400 MILE SALE yet for us!!! Really sold TONS and had wonderful traffic. - Betty Lewis, Ardery’s Antiques, Paris, Kentucky.

“The antique tractor my husband had in the sale was definitely a conversation piece.” - Yard sale in Russellville.

“Our most expensive item was a $50 grill that a customer was willing to pay $40 for. It was so big that he had no way to take it home. My husband offered to deliver for $10. We got our $50!” - The Johnson’s set up at the VFW in Cadiz, Kentucky.

“I had a fold up Victorian style rocker that my daughter-in-law was selling for her mother who is moving out of state. I put $25 on it and on Thursday a man said he would take it for $20. I asked him if he was local and he was. I took his name and number and told him if it did not sell at $25, I would call him, but since it was the first day of the sale, I wanted to wait. A woman came by on Friday and saw it and just leaped for joy and paid the $25. She had been given her grandmother’s chair just like it and said it was placed by her fireplace and was thrilled to find another to match!” - Marion set up her sale at her home in Harrodsburg.

“The Sale was amazing! We had a constant flow of people and many told us about the treasures they found. Because of the event and wonderful weather, we were busier than Memorial Day weekend! Count on me next year to help in any way I can. This was a huge success for Aurora. Big Smiles!” - Su at the Hitching Post.

“Perryville was a very busy and happening place!” - Paul at the Perryville Market.

“Met two sisters that were from Texas that came to Maysville KY and stayed and they said they were planning on doing the whole route. My cookie jar collection was a hit. Sold just about all I had. Was very pleased with the sales.” – Vicki set up at the Mayslick Fire Department.

Note: The itty bitty town of Mayslick was voted as a favorite stop by many.

We used this event as a fundraiser for our local CASA program. While we didn’t make as much money as we had hoped, we were pleased with the results and learned what to do and not to do next year! - Another sale in Mayslick. “We met so many nice people this year from our hometown and from far away. The weather on Friday wasn’t so great but it didn’t hurt our sales as we were inside a garage. Saturday and Sunday couldn’t have been any better as far as the weather went. We had a fantastic three days of saling!” - This is the 5th year Kelly has set up a yard sale at her home in Lebanon.

“This was my first year to set up and sell. In the past, I have shopped. I love doing both. Can’t wait til next year!” - Gayla set up a yard sale in Hopkinsville.

COMMENTS FROM VENDORS

• “A man looked at an old military rifle one day, then drove approximately 80 miles back the next day to find out that the rifle had been sold. I introduced him to the man who had bought it but he wouldn’t sell it.” – For 7 years, Joe Harlan has held a yard sale in Elkton during the 400 Mile Sale.

“Lots of neat stories, interesting people and fun. We love doing it every year.” – 5th year for this yard sale in Harrodsburg.

“ We all had a great time at the Ichthus Farm near Wilmore except for Friday due the high winds and storms. Overall it was an awesome experience for everyone – shoppers from bargains and treasures, vendors made money, had fun and formed bonds with other vendors. They all plan on returning next year. Saturday, naturally, was the best for us with an estimated 1,800 shoppers!” - Mary Kozak, Jessamine County Special Projects Director.

“I always enjoy this yard sale as people come from all over and share their stories with you along their way. I have met some of the nicest people and ones that look forward to coming back every year. I always have had family participate in this sale with me which makes it more fun.” – 6th year participant in the 400 Mile Sale in the Stone Crest Subdivision between Bowling Green & Rockfield – voted one of the favorite stops by shoppers!

And one lady had such fun haggling with a man over a sofa. In the end, he paid the asking price which was still a great bargain. A win/win for everyone!

Donna (St. Louis MO) and Suzanne (Alton IL) traveled 972 miles, stopped at 269 yard sales and bought $196 worth of treasures. And yes! All those “treasures” fit in that little hatchback plus their

luggage. What did they learn? Bring less luggage so they have more room to fit the important stuff!
