This election year is challenging. It’s quite possibly themost unusual and divided of all the presidential electionsthat we have seen in our country for quite some time.Coupled with this highly volatile election is our troublingeconomic situation and the declining moral culture inour land. And if that was not enough, we continue to seeglobal unrest with wars, economic instability, and therise of terrorism. But before we allow ourselves to getdiscouraged and give up, we need to focus our hearts, minds, and feelings on the ONE who has everything inHis hands – our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus told us toALWAYS pray and never give up. Nothing is impossiblewith God. So, as His people, we humbly bend our kneesand seek His face over the next 40 days and nights –praying for His church, for our nation and this upcomingelection, and for the world. May the Lord’s will be doneon Earth as it is in heaven.

And he told them a parable to the effect that they oughtalways to pray and not lose heart.

O Lord Our God, we bring before You the man or womanthat will occupy the office of chief executive of theUnited States and the command-in-chief of our armedforces. O Lord, may this individual come to a place wherehe or she will be a role model in what it means to trust inYour name. Spare us, O God, from the temptation toplace our ultimate trust in the fleeting and fragilestrength of earthly assets; instead, help us all, ourhighest elected officials included, to place ourconfidence ultimately in You. We ask this in the name ofJesus Christ, King of Kings. Amen.

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trustin the name of the LORD our God.

Heavenly Father, there is nothing that escapes Yoursovereignty or power. Leaders rise and fall, but Youremain the Faithful One. We need wisdom, and as Jesuslooked to You for every miracle, may we see what Youare doing and respond accordingly. Remove the noise ofpolitical rhetoric so that we may be still and hear Yourvoice. We call upon You to defeat every demonic foe whois aligned with principalities who are out to rob, kill, anddestroy. May our present leaders and future leaders callupon You who alone has come to give life abundantly. We receive Your direction and call upon You to onceagain bring freedom and liberty in this land. In the nameof Jesus our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Dear Lord, we pray for our nation. According to YourWord, if we would humble ourselves, seek Your face, andrepent of our sins, then You would hear us, forgive us,and restore our nation (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Lord, we want to be obedient to Your Word.We seek Your face. We humble ourselves.

We confess our sins before You. We ask for Your graceand mercy to be granted to our nation. We pray the prayer of Daniel. “O my God, incline yourear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do notpresent our pleas before you because of ourrighteousness, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act.Delay not, for your own sake, O my God, because yourcity and your people are called by your name” (Daniel9:18-19).

Almighty God, as our Savior stood before Pilate, He taughtthe prefect that the authority he wielded on behalf of Romehad been given to him from above (John 19:11). Pilate, like somany earthly rulers, believed the authority he exercisedwas his to do with as he wished. But it is Your authority thatis entrusted into the hands of the men and women whogovern. We pray that all those who desire to handle theauthority of the Omnipotent Ruler of the universe would beaware that they are stewards of the power granted to them, not owners; and as stewards they must be ready to give anaccount of their stewardship. May they be able to do so in amanner that will cause the Master to say, “Well done, goodand faithful servant,” and not “Cast the worthless servantinto the outer darkness.” May the fear of the Lord, which isthe beginning of wisdom, grip each and every office seekerso that they will understand that it is to You that they mustultimately answer. May they realize, as the “worthlessservant” was made to realize, that You will not tolerateexcuses. For their sake and for the sake of those they seekto govern, we ask this, and we do so in the name of the Kingof Kings, our Savior, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear God, in the process of carrying out our civic duties, teach us to discern between what things belong toCaesar and what things belong to You. Give us wisdom toknow how we might render to the state what belongs tothe state, and to You what belongs to You. Find usfaithful to do the same, O God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

We thank Thee, O Lord our God, for the privilege, as freeAmerican citizens, to elect our national government. Butwe also pay heed to the cautionary wisdom in Psalms146:3-4: “Put not Your trust in princes, in a son of man, inwhom there is no salvation. When his breath departs hereturns to his earth; on that very day his plans perish.”Thou alone art sovereign over our land and in our hearts, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory –of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, bothnow and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Father, we know that “the king’s heart is a stream ofwater in the hand of the Lord” and that You turn itwherever You will (Proverbs 21:1). So, in this electioncycle, we trust in Your sovereign will for our nation. Youeven called an ungodly, pagan king like Nebuchadnezzarof Babylon “my servant” (Jeremiah 25:9) because Youused him for Your divine purposes in disciplining, for atime, Your people whom You loved. So, whether therighteous or the unrighteous rule, teach us Yourpurposes, correct us where needed, and may our eyes befixed not on the White House but on Jesus, “the founderand perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Our faith is firmly planted in Jesus Christ. We understandthat the Lord hears our prayers and that His will is alwaysaccomplished. No matter the outcome of this year’selection, we need to understand that God is in control of allthat is happening in the world. We need to continue to pray– without ceasing – for the new president and theiradministration; for the leaders of our nation, including theSupreme Court Justices; for the moral fabric of our nationand that the church can be a bright light in our dark culture;and for the global unrest we see all around us.

But we also ask that you pray for your missionary team,Faith and Action in the Nation’s Capital, that we may bringthe truth, hope, and peace of the Gospel to this newadministration and to Congress, the Supreme Court, andour nation’s military. We covet your prayers and are readyto minister to all the new faces that are now in Washington,D.C.

We pray that you are encouraged and strengthened by theLord Jesus Christ as together we reach our communities, our nation, and our world for Christ.
