Lab Tasks

Task 1: Load the Initial Network Con guration

Make sure that the correct topology and con guration les for this lab are loaded. This will occur automatically

when you load this lab by using the Lab Navigator.

Task 2: Learn the Copy Command

1. From user EXEC mode, issue the enable command to enter privileged EXEC mode. Then con gure a host

name of Router1 for the router.

2. Issue the show running-con g command to display the active con guration in memory. The active

con guration running on the router is referred to as the running-con g in the router’s command-line

interface (CLI). Note that privileged EXEC mode is required to display the active con guration. The running

con guration script is not automatically saved on a Cisco router and will be lost in the event of power

failure. The running con guration must be manually saved with the copy command.

3. Issue the show startup-con g command to display the con guration stored in NVRAM. You have not

saved the con guration, so none can be displayed. Therefore, you should see a &&�'��!��

4. Issue the copy running-con g startup-con g to copy the current active con guration to NVRAM. The

current active con guration is in random access memory (RAM); it should be saved so that the router will

still boot up with the saved con guration in the event of a power outage.

5. Issue the show startup-con g command to show the con guration stored in NVRAM.

6. If you decide that you would like to start con guring the router from scratch, you can erase the startup

con guration and reload the router. This will enable you to completely delete all con gurations on the

router. Issue the erase startup-con g command to delete the con guration le in NVRAM. When

prompted, con rm that you want to erase the NVRAM le system by pressing the Y key.

7. Issue the reload command to reload the router, and press Y when prompted to con rm the reload.

When prompted to enter the initial con guration dialog, press N. The initial con guration dialog prompt is

displayed because a startup con guration was not found. The following is sample output from the reload

8. After the router reboots, look at the startup con guration le again. Because you did not save it before

you reloaded, there is nothing there. Therefore, you should see a &&�'��!��

9. Con gure the host name of the router as Router1.

10. Save your router con guration by issuing the copy running-con g startup-con g command.

12. Reload the router by issuing the reload command. Press Y when prompted to con rm the reload. When

prompted to enter the initial con guration dialog, press N.

13. After the router reloads, the host name Router1, not Boson, is displayed at the prompt because the

con guration used to start the router was the startup con guration. Issue the show startup-con g

command to view the con guration used when the router restarted after you issue the reload command.
