law was applicable today how would you respond? The Old Testament and how it applies to believers today is a confusing topic for many. What applies and what does not apply? Do we keep the law or do we not? These are great questions that Jesus will give us some insight on. Read Matthew 5:17-20. The law was given to Moses 430 years after the promise was given to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3. The law was given because Israel became its own nation and needed to be governed. The law was given to establish a standard for sin and righteousness. It was given to reveal God’s way for life. 4Jesus on the Old Testament Law

THE BIBLE WAY TO HEAVEN

Realize That God Loves You. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

The Bible Says That All Men Are Sinners. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory to God.” (Romans 3:23).

God’s Word Also Says That Sin Must Be Paid For. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The Good News Is That Christ Paid for Our Sins. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

We Must Personally Pray and Receive Christ by Faith as Our Personal Saviour. The Bible Says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

Think about it:

Jesus revealed to us that the law is fulfilled by love.

Matthew 22:37-40

Think About it:

We need to know our Bible’s to know what

O.T. truths are repeated in the N.T.

Jesus came preaching and teaching what appeared to be a new message. Read Luke 16:16. Many of the Jews were thinking He was trying to replace their teachings with His. He is saying in Matthew 5:17, please do not misunderstand me or my message. I am the one the law and the prophets have spoken about. Jesus goes on to say that He fulfilled the law. What does He mean and how? The Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi pointed to a Messiah coming to earth. Jesus was born and lived on this earth just like you and I (II Corinthians 5:21). Jesus lived a sinless life with the same temptations that you and I face everyday (Hebrews 4:14-15).

Jesus kept the ent i re Old Testament law fully. Every command and judgment. He was the perfect sacrifice in His death on the cross that the ceremonial law pointed to. This does not mean the law is now null and void. In verse eighteen, a jot is the smallest letter in the

Read Matthew 5:19. We are to teach God’s word as the standard for all areas of life. Jesus again focuses on our influence on others. How can we break a commandment and teach another to do the same? It is all by our actions and influence. Many times people watch more than they listen. People do what they see. A believer in Jesus Christ is not under the law. Study Galatians chapters three through five. Believers

to achieve or earn heaven. Read Galatians 2:16 and Ephesians 2:8-10. The law brings people to Christ according to Galatians 3:24. How? Let me ask you a couple of questions. Have you ever in your life lied, taken something of another person’s regardless of its value, disobeyed your parent or guardian, wanted something that someones else had, or hated another person. If you have ever done one of these one time in your life you are guilty of breaking God’s law. So what do we do? Read John 3:16-18. This is what Jesus is all about. He came to earth, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross for you. He took the punishment for your sin. There are two people in John 3:18. Those who are guilty of God’s law and will be judged by it and those who are guilty of God’s law and have believed on Jesus Christ to take their judgment. Which one are you?

Your Thoughts

What is Jesus saying in verse twenty? A person would have to be more sinless than the religious rulers who appeared to keep the law. This would be an impossible thing for Jesus’ listeners to do. What is Jesus trying to get across? He reveals that man cannot keep the law, he is sinful, and helplessness against God’s law. There is absolutely nothing a person can do

alphabet and the tittle is the smallest part of a letter. The entire law remains until the end. The law as a system came to an end at Jesus’ death on the cross, but the law as a standard and principle still remains.

live by Christ’s two commandments of love. Believers live by principles rather than a list of rules of do’s and don’ts. How do we know what Old Testament commandments apply for us to teach today? Those that are repeated in the New Testament. Nine out of the ten commandments are repeated in the New Testament. Observing the sabbath day is not. There are many Old Testament truths applicable in the New Testament.
