Swine Exhibitors for State Fair

Animal Project News

State Fair 4-H swine exhibitors are once again required to collect hair (DNA) samples from their animals and turn them into the Extension Office by May 15th in the special envelope that will be provided. Part of this process is that you must also record the animal’s RFID tag on the envelope. The Extension Office now has the envelopes and tags for you to pick up. Online entry for the State Fair is open and swine are due June 1st.

If you are planning to take an animal to Lengerich’s or Manley’s for processing after the 4-H Fair, please give them a call to schedule a time. With all the area fairs happening at approximately the same time, they need to plan accordingly.

Swine Ear Notches

Litter Mark (Right Ear)

The right ear is used for the litter mark. All pigs in the same litter must have the same ear notches in this ear. The right ear is on the pigs own right. Individual Pig Mark (Left Ear)

The left ear is used for notches to show individual pig number in the litter. Each pig will have different notches in this ear.

When listing (or reading) ear notches, the litter number is listed first and the individual pig number is listed second. This pig is out of litter #28. You will need to enter Swine ID into 4-H Online at www.extension.purdue.edu/wells
