    NEXT LEADERS MEETING:

Monday, January 25 |Zoom Meeting | 7:00 pmRegister in advance: https://bit.ly/Jan4-HMeetingAfter registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

    Happy New Year!

I don’t need to tell any of you that 2020 was quite the year. I am cautiously optimistic that we might be able to return to in person programming by summer. It might still not look how we wish, we might need to be aware of distance and wearing masks, but I think that we will be excited to get back together.

In the meantime, I am encouraging you all to reach out to each other. Plan those Zooms or Google Meets, don’t be discouraged if you only have one or two people join you. Be understanding that everyone is in a different space during this time, they may want to join but have something else come up last minute. I know everyone is spending a lot more time in front of a computer and there maybe a tendency to say, “I don’t want to have an online meeting because no one wants to be on the computer any more than they have to.” But when we are done with our school day or work day online, what do we do? Many times we go back and sit on our screens again attempting to connect with people. Our virtual meetings do some of that. 4-H is not just education and business, it is fun and connecting with people who enjoy similar things.

If you would like to attempt to hold an in person meeting, please check out the state’s guidance on the website https://4h.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-faqs-related-to-covid-19/. After you have checked out that website and think that you can safely continue to plan a face-to-face meeting please contact me for the Program Planning Checklist that needs to be filled and approved. Please note that the local health situation will affect the approval of these meetings.

Thank you for all that you have been doing over the last nine months!

    Stay positive and keep connecting!

A Word from the BoardSeason’s Greetings,

Wishing everyone a happy holiday season this year. December is always my time to reflect on the past year but this year has been like no other and I am looking towards the future and to see what 2021 holds, whatever happens I know we can all adapt and find the positive. Over the past two and a half years I have met so many wonderful people that all love 4-H and our youth in this county. Thank you for letting me be on the Adult Leader’s board. I had only recently become the club leader for Crystal Star when I was asked if I would run as vice president/president, and with the help from many fellow adult leaders I was guided through the million and one questions that I had. I want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone for all of their extra patience, kindness and understanding this year as we all encountered new situations and a different way to do 4-H. We may not have done everything we wanted to do this year but we have done what 4-H members do best… ‘To make the best better’. That is something to be proud of, every volunteer has been an excellent example for our youth. Thank you again and have a wonderful holiday season

Project UpdatesHere are some ideas to help our 4-H members achieve their project goals for 2020-2021.

    1. Read through any project material available concerning the project. A great resource is the Fair Premium Book available online www.OutagamieCountyFair.com/entriescontests/ or purchase a hard copy. Other resources are available through the Extension office. Please make arrangements to pick up materials with Joan or Vicki at 832-5122 or 832-5123 or [email protected] or [email protected]. Attend meetings virtually or in person at the club, county, or state level concerning the project.3. No project leader in your club, no problem! Look through the Outagamie county 4-H Family Handbook for project resource leaders.4. Still no leadership? Contact your main or general club leader for advice or look to project committee leaders also in the 4-H Family Handbook.5. PROJECT LEADERS, please reach out to clubs that do not have project leaders in your project. The Extension office also has that information. Maybe not all of your club members can attend a meeting so if you have room for a few more, open your project meeting up to other clubs.6. Do not wait!! The winter months are the ideal time to start planning and preparing projects for the fair. It is also the best time to contact someone to help you!

When it comes to projects, we leaders, especially resource leaders, are here to assist our members to the best of our ability. When our members are successful and having fun, it makes others want to join 4-H!

Volunteer LeadersPlanning a Meeting?Meetings are still happening during the pandemic. Some virtual and some are able to be held in-person. Please contact Alicia with your questions or ideas and start planning a project or club meeting today!

Also, please note the following when planning an in-person meeting:

“Prior to submitting a Program Approval request to the state, the local educator is responsible to assure that the activity is safe and is necessary by using the following guidelines.

    a. As written, the plan meets both the UW Extension COVID guidelines and any more stringent local health guidance..b. The rationale for meeting in-person outweighs the likely risks of meeting in person, (i.e. important for youth to see one another and celebrate together and it can be done in a low risk way)c. The objectives of the activity cannot be accomplished in a format other than in-person, (Belonging, Mastery, Independence, Generosity is a meaningful focus and due to technology constraints, developmental factors, location in community, etc. this activity needs to happen in-person)

If the plan does not meet (a,b and c) then please do not submit for approval. Either revise it so that it meets all criteria or it may be denied.

If the plan meets all 3 criteria it is considered safe and necessary and is ready for submission.”

Another good source of information when planning your meeting is the Frequently Asked Questions page on the state website. https://4h.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-faqs-related-to-covid-19/

CongratulationsPhotography WinnersThis years fall photography contest was another great success. I am amazed at the creativity shown in the photos submitted.

First and second place winners in each age group received a $10 gift card.

Winners were as follows:Cloverbuds: 1st place: Ava Friemark, B-Square 2nd place: Kadence Javoroski, Wide Awake Forward 3rd-5th Grade: 1st place: Owen McCann, B-Square 2nd place: Kahlan Scherg, Buchanan Badgers 6-8th Grade: 1st place: Evan Hooks, Country Slickers 2nd place: Allison Gagnow, B-Square 9-12th Grade: 1st place: Abigail Veeser, Fast Trackers 2nd place: Alicia Thern, B-Square Examples of some of the judges’ comments:- This is an excellent spot for a beautiful photo. It draws me in and makes me want to go explore that bridge, and I can almost smell the fresh air. This one belongs on a wall.- This photo is really interesting. Good for you to notice the beauty in the contrast between old wood and new life. Close-up is nice for seeing some of the fine details of nature.- Beautiful photo. I’d be proud of myself if I took this one so I think you should be, too. Let’s just drive down this picturesque road less traveled and see where it goes. Love how the trees totally form a natural ceiling over the road. I like the depth in this photo as well.- There’s something special about seeing the variety of beauty that a night sky can create. You have to be observant to catch it at the right time, too. I like the use of the darkened night time trees at the bottom to create the landscaping.- Nice framing of this spot. It makes me imagine entering that photo from the bottom right, walking down the trail and into the woods, right deep into the photo. I like how the photo gives the feeling of a place to wander. I also like the large rock and its placement in the photo. It makes the colors in the woods pop out even more. Looking forward to seeing some of these photos submitted to the fair next summer. Keep watching for those unexpected photo opportunities, especially as the season changes. Thank you,Tammy KureyCounty Photography Leader

4-H HistoryDid you know:According to the national 4-H website history log, in the late 1800’s, researchers discovered adults in the farming community did not readily accept new agricultural developments on university campuses, but found that young people were open to new thinking and would experiment with new ideas and share their experiences with adults. In this way, rural youth programs introduced new agriculture technology to communities. The idea of practical and “hands-on” learning came from the desire to connect public school education to country life. Building community clubs to help solve agricultural challenges was a first step toward youth learning more about the industries in their community. A. B. Graham started a youth program in Clark County, Ohio, in 1902, which is considered the birth of 4-H in the United States. The first club was called “The Tomato Club” or the “Corn Growing Club.” T.A. Erickson of Douglas County, Minnesota, started local agricultural after-school clubs and fairs that same year. Jessie Field Shambaugh developed the clover pin with an H on each leaf in 1910, and by 1912 they were called 4-H clubs. The passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914 created the Cooperative Extension System at USDA and nationalized 4-H. By 1924, 4-H clubs were formed and the clover emblem was adopted.

As highlighted by Bill Shaw, Outagamie County 4-H agent from 1966-1996, 4-H club work was introduced into Outagamie County on September 25, 1925, through the efforts of the late Mrs. John Schoettle in the township of

Greenville. Then in 1927, the late Mrs. Ernest Schuster, a rural school teacher at Isaar, introduced 4-H project work in the school curriculum. The efforts of these women provided the seed for a county-wide 4-H program.

For a few years 4-H clubs had the opportunity to participate in two community fairs. Seymour’s fair, since 1883, was in August and Hortonville’s fair, 1882-1930’s was in September. By 1934, 21 clubs existed.

Now it’s your turn to help the 4-H History Committee to develop information about each club. What is the name of your club? How did your club come up with their name? When did your club start?Who were the founding leaders and/or members?Who are the current leaders? How many members did you have when the club started? How many members do you have now?

List some highlights of your club history going back as far as you can. Please submit your answers and highlights to: [email protected] by January 15. Those who submit information and attend the January 2021 Leaders meeting will be eligible for the gift card drawings.

State Events and OpportunitiesWisconsin 4-H offers so many excellent opportunities for youth. This past year was an interesting one with Covid-19 helping us to explore new ways to connect with other 4-Hers from around the state, country, and world. Planning is still happening for many events on a virtual platform. Please checkout the state website for more information on Educational Travel Opportunities and events. https://4h.extension.wisc.edu/opportunities/statewide-events-and-opportunities/.

2020 WI 4-H Fall Forum ConferenceThis year the WI 4-H Fall Forum Conference was held via Zoom with over 500 youth, volunteers and staff participants! Outagamie county had about 13 youth and adults participate. Everyone participated in workshops, activities, and networking with other 4-Hers around the state building leadership and communication skills. We cannot wait for 2021!

MemoriamBill Shaw, age 83 of Appleton, passed away Friday morning, December 18, 2020. Bill was the Outagamie County 4-H Youth Development Agent from 1966 until 1996. During that time, he served as Department Head for the Extension from 1983 until 1994. Bill retired on August 1, 1996.

Bill was a people person who did not forget people! He was passionate about the 4-H program and had a positive impact on the lives of many Outagamie County 4-H members as well as adult leaders. Outagamie County is known for its multi-generational 4-H program that grew under his leadership. His leadership as the Cooperative Extension Department Head established the high-quality programs Outagamie County Extension is known for. He made sure there was funding for programs and the needed outreach so that there were 4-H

clubs in every school district in the county. He prided himself in the number of clubs and the outreach those clubs accomplished throughout the years. He felt the adult leaders/mentoring was a critical element to enriching the lives of the youth before “mentoring” was the new way to do things. Bill was an educator, manager and meticulous planner for programs and events that produced wonderful outcomes as a result. Bill touched the lives of others with his passionate caring ways.

He was recognized several times during his professional career for his leadership and organizational skills. He was an instructor at several Extension workshops, judged at numerous county fairs, and in his retirement taught Adventures in Dairyland to 4th grade students as a volunteer for several years.

Bill’s obituary can be found at the following link: https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/postcrescent/obituary.aspx?n=william-d-shaw&pid=197319823&fhid=14153
