Norman E. Borlaug Memorial Celebrations

The best way to keep alive the legacy of Nobel laureate

Norman E. Borlaug , the “farm boy from Iowa” whose

pioneering work averted millions of hunger deaths in

the world, is for young researchers to pursue science

with humanism. Indeed on first seeing the situation in

Mexico, for himself, Dr. Borlaug reacted with near

despair. Mexican soils were depleted, the crops were

ravaged by diseases, yields were low and the farmers

could not feed themselves, much less improve their lot

by selling surplus. He spent countless hours hunched

over in the blazing Mexican sun as he manipulated tiny

wheat blossoms to cross different strains. To speed up the work, he set up

winter and summer operations in far- flung parts of Mexico, logging

thousands of miles over poor roads. He battled illness, forded rivers in flood,

dodged mudslides and sometimes even slept in tents.

Dr. Borlaug's helped to trigger the in India at a time in the

1960s of doomsday famine forecasts for a country that existed “ship-to-

mouth”. He was widely described as the father of the broad agricultural

movement called the though decidedly reluctant to accept

the title.

Dr.Borlaug received his Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology in the year 1942 from

the University of Minnesota. Dr. M.S.Swaminathan described that Dr.Borlaug

firmly believed in the fundamental principle of social inclusion of technology

access.

Because of his achievements to prevent hunger, famine and misery around the

world it is said that Dr. Borlaug has

There will be first opening technical session on Norman E. Borlaug memorial

celebrations with few invited lectures from contemporaries of Dr. Borlaug.

“I have always known that Udaipur was one of

the beautiful places of the world, but pictures

and photographs do not give one and an

adequate idea of it. One has to see it with one's

own eyes to take it in. I have done this today.” Sir

Amold Joyanbee (Historian)

Udaipur, popularly known as 'Venice of the east

and city of lakes' is perhaps the most romantic city in Rajasthan. A city without

any rival in the country, it is not only known for brutal forts, but also for

exquisitely decorated palaces, gardens and lake views. Palaces on lake shores

and on islands are surrounded by emerald and turquoise waters. Encircled by

the Aravali Mountains, these lakes, palaces

and gardens present an exquisite beauty,

which never fails to impress. Undoubtedly,

there is no place in India, which appeals more

to the imagination of poets and painters,

travelers and writers than Udaipur. The

mountains, the lakes and the altitude give

Udaipur an extremely agreeable climate. The

sunset and sunrise are from a dream world.

Udaipur has been an inspiration for countless

artists, architects, poets and film makers over

the years. Udaipur with a treasure of history,

picturesque architecture and bewitching

landscape is an unparalleled destination on the

tourist map of India. Udaipur has always been a

place of attraction for tourists. There are so

many places to visit, right from the famous

Palace of Udai Singh, which is built on a low

ridge right at the edge of lake Pichola - thereby making it appear to be afloat on

its placid waters.

UDAIPUR – THE VENICE OF EAST

UDAIPUR - CITY OF DREAMS AND WORLD'S MOST PRIZED CITY

The City palace is accessible through three gateways.

Interior comprises, among others, of the luminous

Sheesh Mahal embelished with tiles and mirror inlays;

the beautiful with tiles and mirror inlays; the beautiful

Krishna Vilas having a beautiful enclosure with four rows

of painted scenes in miniature.

The Pratap Smarak commemorates the chivalry of brave

Maharana Pratap. A bronze statue of this great hero has

been erected here. A Japanese rock-cut garden in the

vicinity deserves a visit.

The Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal Museum houses a rich collection of folk dance

ornaments, puppets, masks, dolls, folk, musical instruments, folk deities and

paintings.

Overlooking the city is a steep hill, about 152.5 metres high, on which stands a

striking fortified palace `Sajjangarh'. Also known as the 'Monsoon Palace', it

was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh to house an observatory.

Barely 3 kms. from Udaipur, lies Shilpgram, a village conceived as a living

ethnographic museum to depict the lifestyles of the folk and tribal people and

also depicting the enormous diversities in craft, art & culture between various

Indian States.

The romantic desert state Rajasthan with its legends of Chivalry and Valour is

one of the most exciting destinations in India -

splendid desert, forts, beautiful lakes, palaces

and temples transport the visitor subtly back to

the valiant times of royal Rajputs. It is an

invigorating colorful land where the vivacity of

its people, the colour of their costumes & craft

and the exuberance of their celebration add an

extra dimension.

The cities of Rajasthan still retain the medieval flavour keeping alive the in

timeless traditions rich in art & craft.

India, the ancient Vedic country of legends, bountiful gaiety lined with

Himalayan mountain ranges, with the Everest highest mountain in the world.

geographically, naturally and represents the

wisdom of the yore. In this country of rich

cultural heritage and the land of Saints, Plant

with all the branches of science excelling all

through these ages.

Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology founded in 1970 is engaged in

scientific pursuits of International standards. The official publication "Journal
