November 2014 Hats off to Jennie Shephard for coordinating and pulling off one of the most successful Health Fair’s in recent history. This year Tyler Pipe was proud to once again host UT Health Science Center along with Summit Health, The Smith County United Way, Southwest Optical as well as representatives from Sam’s Club.

Tyler Pipe says Good Bye to one of the Hallmark Team Members that graced the halls of the East Office Building. After forty years of loyal service to Tyler Pipe, Lynn Guy calls it quits and looks forward to a point where his time is his own. Helping Lynn to celebrate this milestone was his wife, Amber, his daughter Julie and his two grand children. Lynn has spent his life

working in and around computers, has watched software systems come and fade away and was part of the implementation of our newest soft-ware upgrade Microsoft Dynamics' AX. Lynn had Team Members that he has worked with for forty years to stop by and wish him well and pass along thoughtful sentiments. Another forty “year-er,” Jody Phillips said, “You will never find a kinder guy than Lynn Guy”. Laughs were shared, gifts were given and a luncheon was served. At the end of it all Lynn began the greatest adventure of all, retirement.

Retirement is like a long vacation in Las Vegas. The goal is to enjoy it the fullest, but not so fully that you run out of money. — Jonathan Clements

On Friday, October the 31st, in remembrance of Breast Cancer awareness month, Tyler Pipe Team Members stood

together to honor those brave individuals that choose to stand and fight against

cancer. They donned their pink T-shirts and released balloons in the sky to

commemorate their struggle. Each year more than one million people in the

United States receive a cancer diagnosis and this event gives us an opportunity to show that they / you are not in this fight alone!

The TAG’ed winner for the third quarter of 2014 is Juan Ortega! As you can see, Juan is smiling in the picture to the right because that is a $250 Visa Gift Card that he is receiving from his Supervisor, Ross Caldwell. It is also interesting to note that Juan had other TAG forms in the draw box, we just happened to draw the TAG form where he has used his 25 years of experience to provide a significant cost savings for Tyler Pipe. Juan maintains the print heads that stencil the side of the pipe. As with most machinery, it has a cleaning and regular maintenance schedule. Juan cleans the print heads daily and performs other maintenance which triples the life of the print head and reduces the down time from a mechanical failure. All total Ross said that because of Juan’s ingenuity, he estimates that Juan saves Tyler Pipe about $2,400 per month. Way to go Juan. That is the way to go above and beyond!

Did You Know

Depression—Got the blues? Here’s how to tell if it’s something more serious

You may get the blues every now and then, when life’s setbacks and sorrows overwhelm you. You may feel sad for a short time before you get back to your regular self. But what if these feelings didn’t go away? What if you felt sad for more than a few weeks or even months?

That’s more than the blues; you could have depression, says Charles Walker, Ph.D., a psy-chologist at UT Health Northeast. Signs of depression can include a persistent sad mood; no pleasure in activities you normally enjoy; changes in your appetite, weight, and energy level; trouble concentrating; memory problems; feeling worthless or guilty; and thoughts of suicide.

“Most people with depression have at least five of these symptoms, but they can have more,” Dr. Walker says. Depression can be due to your grief over a major life event, such as losing a job or the death of a close family member, he says. If your sad mood doesn’t lighten after a few months, you may have depression. You could have only one episode of depression, ranging from mild – a feeling of general unhappiness – to severe – not wanting to eat, get out of bed, or go to work, Dr. Walker says. You might have recurring bouts of severe depression, where you function normally between episodes of depression.

Some prescription drugs are at least mildly effective against depression. The worse your depression, the better the drugs work, he adds. Talking with a psychiatrist, psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, or other mental health provider can help. Most effective is a combination of drugs and counseling. Regular exercise has also been shown to help with depression. “Depression is the leading cause of medical disability in the United States and Canada. It accounts for 10 percent of all disability,” Dr. Walker says. That’s because people with depression are at risk for diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and stroke.

If you think you are depressed, don’t wait. See your health care professional. If you have thoughts of hurting yourself or others, call 911 and get help immediately.

Doug Adcock was awarded a $100 Wal-Mart gift card for best Safe-ty Alert submitted for the second quarter of this year. Doug identi-fied plant safety improvements that were immediately imple-mented into our lock-out / tag-out procedure. As a Master Electri-cian with 12 years of service to Tyler Pipe, Doug knows a thing or two about the safe way to get a job done. The Safety Alert program is a process for Team Members who see safety hazards or think of a way to improve safety to communicate that to the JUMSCO com-mittee for implementation. (By the way, JUMSCO is short for Joint Union Management Safety Committee ) It’s a processes like this that have helped Tyler Pipe become an industry leader in safe-ty. The system rewards individuals whom actively participate in the safety program which creates a better working environment for

themselves and others. Along with the Wal-Mart Gift Card, Doug received a title, he is now the newest member of the Lock Out Committee. Great Job Doug! Remember: Safety is not a program...It is a way of Life!
