“Hotels are about people; whether it is those that operate them, build them or enjoy them. Design, style, comfort, success and ultimately a great hotel are borne from an understanding of how all these people come together no matter what brand or budget you work to.” Gordon Ferrier, Divisional Director - Head of Hotels

From feasibility and space planning exercises to the creation of complete hotel brand concepts, from design co-ordination to executive architect delivery roles, we have worked internationally across all hotel types.

With expertise across a wide cross-section of sectors and extensive end-user knowledge we can also help add value for developers of mixed-use schemes where the inclusion of hotels can help leverage value.

“Successful hotels also reflect the character of the city they are in.”

By talking and listening closely to you we ensure we have a strong understanding of your business to create designs that promote and reflect your brand values.

We have worked with some of the biggest names to create identities that increase market attention and build comfort and trust in customers with the additional benefit of reduced development time and construction costs when rolled out across several projects.

We understand the drivers involved in hotel development whether the requirements are for a new build, refurbishment, extension or conversion.

We advise clients across a whole spectrum of issues including: re-planning and re-modeling rooms; space requirements; improving and upgrading the rating and quality of their hotel; configuring the most efficient set-up for back-of-house facilities.

We also help clients search for the perfect location for their hotel and can quickly establish the suitability of the area.

“Hotels have certain complexities but a quick educated sketch on the back of a napkin can often quickly determine whether a hotel is viable.”

A thorough understanding of client requirements and operational needs allows us to deliver economy of plan and discard or recommend sites very quickly at assessment stage. This collaborative approach means the tightest budgets and timescales can be met.

We have set brand standards, including room sizes etc, for several hotel chains. We work with and advise executive architects to help ensure efficient, effective delivery and that the integrity of the brand is maintained. By working closely with interior designers we can ensure the successful integration of concepts into a holistic and coherent final solution.

Having worked across all forms of hotels, from budget to boutique to luxury, we appreciate that each offers something different. Customers want and need a choice dependent on the reason for their stay and their relative budgets.

Luxury hotels require something special. They do not always rely on their location or climate but rather provide the guest with a unique environment and unforgettable experience; a destination in their own right with a sense of theatre and drama and exceptional service. The hotel itself is often the main attraction and the key reason for the visit.

Budget hotels on the other hand are based on the understanding that the main criteria for guests are a great bed and a clean bathroom. Clever design and efficient use of space provides guests with a cost-effective and comfortable offer. Consideration of pre-fabrication techniques can also ensure an affordable and speedily constructed solution stacked above a clever front of house offering.

The hospitality industry is a constantly changing animal. An understanding of all hotel types means we are able to upgrade from economy through to super luxury and meet new expectations. Wide, cross-sector expertise gives us the ability to convert other building types into new hotel venues. With the appearance and ambience of listed buildings making appealing hotels we can sensitively refurbish and extend existing buildings, as well as re-use listed building using clever thinking to achieve economy in planning and make use of often tricky spaces.

Future hotel design is dependent on innovation to meet the ever-changing expectations of operators and their guests. We research new concepts and technologies to push the boundaries. A major consideration is the provision of sustainable stays and the reduction of environmental impact during development, construction and operation. The real innovation will be achieving this goal without sacrificing the luxury we associate with hospitality.
