A Word About BRIS Speed Ratings...BRIS Speed Ratings accurately represent how fast a

horse has run. Like other popular speed ratings, BRIS

Speed Ratings are based on the final time of the race

and, most importantly, include an accurate "track

variant" (which measures the speed of a racetrack on

a specific day.) Unlike other speed indicators, the

track variant is derived by an objective, computer-

precise method rather than the subjective opinion of

one handicapper. The highest BRIS Speed Ratings

(110 and up) will usually only be achieved by the best

stakes horses. And, of course, older horses will

typically run faster than their younger counterparts. A

2-year-old might win a stakes race with a 95 BRIS

Speed Rating or may become a champion with a

rating over 100.

The young Frenchman was the leading riderlast winter at Turfway Park, the site of the Classic.Meanwhile, trainer Shug McGaughey confirmed thatGood Reward (Storm Cat) will join Perfect Drift in theClassic as a first-time Polytracker. The five-year-oldhorse was a good second to Lava Man in the GI PacificClassic and is coming off a fourth to Wanderin Boy inthe Sept. 16 GII Brooklyn Breeders= Cup H. McGaugheysaid the relatively quick turnaround didn=t concern him.AIt=s a non-issue in my opinion,@ he said. AHe came backfrom the Brooklyn well, and he worked good [Monday].@He worked a half in :48.43 at Belmont Park.

DOZEN REMAIN IN ARC With 12 remaining inSunday's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barriere, the Longchamp feature looks set for a small field de-spite the planned addition of Paul and Susan Roy'sSixties Icon (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) at tomorrow's supple-mentary stage. Among the dozen aspirants are thepower trio of Michael Tabor's Hurricane Run (Ire)(Montjeu {Ire}), Baron Georg von Ullmann's Shirocco(Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and Makoto Kaneko's Deep Im-pact (Jpn) (Sunday Silence). Trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre will saddle N P Bloodstock's six-year-old marePride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre), who could be his only repre-sentative after suggesting that Princess Zahra AgaKhan's G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Mandesha (Fr) (DesertStyle {Ire}) is more likely to run in the G1 Prix del'Opera on the same card. De Royer-Dupre issued anupbeat bulletin on Pride, who conquered Hurricane Runin the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, but revealed thatthe three-year-old Mandesha had failed to fire on thesoft in a home gallop at Chantilly. APride looks very welland did a marvelous gallop this morning on the softground,@ he said yesterday. AMandesha worked over amile in a normal gallop, but the ground was a little bitsoft and when it's like that, she is not the same.@

De Royer-Dupre continued, AShe wants firm groundand was not the same as before the Vermeille. I havetold the Prince what my opinion is when we discussedit together, and he will make a decision on whether wesupplement her to the Arc, with his daughter PrincessZahra, either today or tomorrow.@ Hurricane Run andShirocco's trainer Andre Fabre is also responsible forKhalid Abdullah's G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner RailLink (GB) (Dansili {GB}), while John Pearce's June 3 G1Epsom Derby runner-up Dragon Dancer (GB) (Sadler'sWells) and Paul Vidal's G1 Prix du Jockey-Club secondBest Name (GB) (King's Best) stood their ground. Asexpected, Anthony Pakenham's G1 Epsom Derby heroSir Percy (GB) was scratched. Aidan O'Brien has left inSusan Magnier's G1 Irish Champion S. winner DylanThomas (Ire) (Danehill) and G1 English, Irish and York-shire Oaks heroine Alexandrova (Ire) (Sadler's Wells),but both are expected to miss the race in favor of alter-native targets in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup and Prixde l'Opera respectively. Berend van Dalfsen's G2 GrandPrix de Deauville scorer Irish Wells (Fr) (Poliglote {GB}),John Livock's Listed Predominate S. winner Champion-ship Point (Ire) (Lomitas {GB}) and Nelson Radwan's G1Prix Saint-Alary winner Germance (Silver Hawk) com-plete the list, although the latter is set to contest thePrix de l'Opera. AI left Germance in after the first forfeitstage and will probably leave her in at the next stagetomorrow to have another look,@ trainer Jean-CludeRouget said. ATo run in the Arc to finish fourth or fifthis not very tempting, but to run in the Prix de l'Operawith a first-class chance of winning is much more inter-esting. At this stage it is 80-20 in favor of the Opera.@According to Championship Point's trainer MickChannon, the colt has been left in the race in error andwill be withdrawn today. Longchamp was describedyesterday as officially Asoft@ with a largely dry spellexpected in the lead-up to the weekend.

CATCH THE WAVE The Keeneland September yearling sale in 2004grossed $324,904,300, a new record for a horse sale,by about $7 million over the 1999 November MixedSale. It marked a $50-million rebound from 2003, thesecond of the two MRLS years. After peaking in 2000,the North American market especially dropped for threeyears, through a combination of the dot-com crash andMRLS. So it was seriously big news two years agowhen the September Sale finished up with a gross justshort of $325 million. Now, two years later, the sale finished about oneBook 2 yearling away from becoming the first$400-million horse sale in history. The huge leap waslast year, when the gross jumped by almost $60 mil-lion, to a runaway new horse sale record of$384,349,900--almost a 20-percent increase from theprevious year's record. Historically, after such a huge jump, the next yearalmost invariably follows a pattern of consolidationrather than continued double-digit increases. So itproved at Keeneland this year: with exactly 11 morehorses sold than last year (3,556 this year), the grossand average each increased 4 percent, to$399,791,800 and $112,427, respectively. I sowanted to hear that Keeneland president Nick Nicholsonhad jumped out of his chair in his office, run down tothe pavilion, and thrown in a bid of $210,000 on thelast horse just to satisfy my quest for symmetry and a$400-million sale, but I shall have to be satisfied withsaying >nearly, in fact very nearly, $400-million.' In twoyears since setting a new record, Keeneland Septem-ber's gross has increased by a further 23 percent whileaveraging double-digit increases. Whatever the reasons, qualifications, and disclaimers (inflation of value due tonumber of mares bred to more expensive stud fees, forexample), the raw numbers are very impressive.

With Keeneland only having finished only on Monday,it makes the numbers at the opening day of Goffs Mil-lion sale yesterday even that much more impressive.Reversing a trend which had seen their top sale losei10-million in gross between 2002 and 2004, lastyear's reconstituted Million Sale (still called Orby, in asort of codeshare, plus the traditional one-day Sports-man's Sale) saw a massive i24-million (77 percent)spike in gross and 49-percent spike in average, to agross of i54,999,900 (like, you couldn't have bid anextra i100 to round it off?). The three-day Orby/Millionsale alone saw 519 yearlings average i99,455. The three days last year averaged aroundi17.2-million per day. Through the first 200 of the230-strong catalogue yesterday, the session was oncourse for around a i20-million day, and an averagenear enough to i115,000. Having registered a 77percent gain the previous year, and looking atKeeneland's 4-percent rise, just breaking the i100,000mark in average would have been enough to declarethis a good sale. To be up 15 percent has to be testi-mony to the success of the seven-figure sale race con-cept, as well as to the continuing strength or Ireland'sCeltic Tiger economy. The pundits keep saying it can'tlast, yet every year more and more property millionairesare created in Ireland, and more and more of them arepersuaded to >have a go' in the horse business. Goffshas successfully transformed itself because they'vefound a way to tap into the rich Irish horse tradition, combined with the continuing wealth creation of theCeltic Tiger.

WEEKEND PEDIGREEPERSPECTIVES

by Alan Porter

Yesterday's session produced some interesting exam-ples of how things work these days. The high filly wasa Red Ransom, sold by Kildaragh for the storiedBallymacoll Stud, whose dam was a stakes-placedGreen Desert half-sister to Islington, second dam Hel-lenic. Everybody loves these old outfits like Ballymacoll,so everybody's a player. The top colt, on the otherhand, was an >individual.' Judge Amanda Skiffingtonsigned the ticket, at i525,000 for a colt by Danetimewith two blank dams, the second dam a daughter ofRappa Tap Tap. Two other names jumped out on thestallion front: Kingmambo (sire of the $11.7-millionsaletopper in Kentucky), had a filly bring i500,000 anda colt bring i400,000, his only two in the sale; andGalileo, Europe's wide-margin leading second-crop sire, had six yearlings (from his third crop, probably not thebest mares he's seen) average i227,500. That hap-pened for one reason: they were good individuals. Let'snot let any >sale politics' cloud that issue. No clouding the issue of the best coffee on thegrounds, either; our old pal Peter Bark is back withCaffe Fresca. Taking a cue from my years of declaringthem >the best lattes outside of Seattle,' Peter hasbanners up claiming it is no less than >The Finest Coffeein the World'. That's the spirit: we are the Celtic Tiger.Catch the wave. Bill Oppenheim may be contacted [email protected]. Please cc TDN management [email protected].

Back in 2000 when we were studying the freshmansires, we noticed that an unusual number of Maria=sMon=s first crop were out of mares carrying His Majestyor his brother, Graustark. It turned out that this was apretty good play. In his first crop came G1 KentuckyDerby victor Monarchos, whose third dam was byGraustark; and stakes winner Wedlock, out of a mareby His Majesty. In Maria=s Mon=s second crop cameGrade I winner See How She Runs, whose second damwas by Graustark. Now, in his first crop of three-year-olds sired sinceMonarchos=s Classic victory, Maria=s Mon has anothermajor winner with the Graustark/His Majesty connec-tion in the shape of this weekend=s GII Super Derbyvictor Strong Contender. Incidentally, this crop--thefifth for Maria=s Mon--is typical of a Arebound crop@ foryoung stallion who comes back into favor after a brightstart: in addition to Strong Contender, it also includesWait a While, who took the GI American Oaks Invita-tional S.; the GIII El Camino Real Derby winner Cause toBelieve; and other black-type scorers Flying Past Fast,Candy Jo and Charley Tango.

STRONG CONTENDER, c, 2003

Strong Contender is out of Kopenhagen, a daughterof Dynaformer, a horse who, in addition to his deeds asa stallion, is beginning to earn some appreciate as abroodmare sire, his daughters having already producedGrade 1 winners Hollywood Story and Sharp Lisa, andother group and graded winners Diadella, New Girl-friend, Dyna Da Wyna, Hours of Justice and Kilgowan.A half-sister to the Barretts Juvenile S. winner NewAspirations, Kopenhagen was an accomplished per-former in her own right. She made only five starts--allat two--winning twice, and capturing second in theGreen River S. at Keeneland and the Hollywood WildcatS. at Calder.

The distaff side of Kopenhagen=s pedigree is lessfamiliar. Her dam, Eterna Fe, arrived in the U.S. at theage of six, having spent her entire racing career in hernative Argentina. The daughter of the Hyperion-linestallion Good Bloke proved to be a very accomplishedrunner on her home ground, capturing the G1 GranPremio Enrique Acebal and G2 Premio Arturo A.Bullrich, and taking second in the G1 Gran Premio 25de Mayo, and third in the G1 Gran Premio Criadores. Inaddition to her two U.S. black-type performers, EternaFe is also granddam of Eterna Girl, a multiple Group 1-placed performer in Argentina. Etera Girl is a half-sisterto Evershine, who produced Mario Eterno, a Group 2winner who was also Group 1-placed in Argentina. Thefamily does have earlier connections to the U.S. if wego back to the fifth dam, Eterna, as she is half-sister toElite, whose imported son Tibaldo won the MichiganMile and One Sixteenth S. and Westchester S. in themid-sixties. Tibaldo also stood at stud in the U.S., andalthough he made little direct impact as a stallion, hisdaughters appear in the tail-female lines of severalstakes winners, including Slew o= Gold=s Group 1-win-ning daughter Golden Opinion, the highweighted Euro-pean three-year-old filly miler of her crop, as well ascurrent U.S. stakes winners Last Romance and SweetFourty.

Another half-sister to Eterna and Elite, Enfasis, pro-duced Suiti, an Argentine stakes winner who also tooksecond in the Ladies H. and third in the Distaff H. whenimported to the U.S. Subsequently, Suiti became damof the GII Del Mar Oaks heroine Our Suiti Pie; thegranddam of GI Vosburgh S. winner and successful sireHarlan; and third dam of GI Spinaway S. victress ThingsChange. At the beginning of the article, we mentioned thehigh incidence of mares carrying His Majesty orGraustark in their pedigree bred to Maria=s Mon in hisfirst crop, and we suspect that this was no accident. His Majesty and Graustark are by Ribot, out of thefamous mare Flower Bowl. Maria=s Mon is a grandsonof Majestic Light, who was by Majestic Prince (damYour Hostess, a three-parts sister to Flower Bowl), outof a mare by Ribot. Thus, of the eight ancestors in thethird generation of the pedigree of His Majesty andGraustark, seven are repeated in the pedigree of Majes-tic Light. This combination has proved to be a veryeffective one, and appears in at least 17 stakes win-ners, including, in addition to Monarchos, See How SheRuns and Strong Contender (three of the five highestU.S. earners for Maria=s Mon); champion sprinter KonaGold (the best runner for his sire, Java Gold); GI Ken-tucky Oaks heroine Lite Light; and GIII Santa Ynez S.winner Queen of Money (the only graded scorer for hersire, Corporate Report). In addition to the Majestic Light/His Majesty/Graustark connection, the parallels between Monarchosand Strong Contender run almost eerily close.Monarchos was purchased by John C. Oxley from theconsignment of Murray Smith at the 2000 Fasig-TiptonFlorida Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, and trained by

John T. Ward Jr.Strong Contenderwas an $800,000sale topper at the2005 Keeneland AprilSale, again purchasedby Oxley from Smith, and he is also trainedby Ward. When welook at the pedigreeof Monarchos, wecan note that hisgranddam, RegalRoberta, is by

Roberto out of Regal Road, by Graustark out of On theTrail. Strong Contender=s broodmare sire, Dynaformer,is by Roberto out of Andover Way, who is by His Majesty (brother to Graustark) out of On the Trail, and so has a virtually identical pedigree to RegalRoberta.

BARBARO S PROGRESS PLEASESVETERINARIANSby Gail Luciani, Director of UPenn Office of Communications

KENNETT SQUARE, PA...Veterinarians at Penn=sGeorge D. Widener Hospital continue to be pleasedwith the medical progress of Kentucky Derby winnerBarbaro, who remains in stable condition at thehospital. The left hind hoof on Barbaro has grownabout 18 millimeters in the heel area, said Dr. DeanRichardson, Chief of Surgery. It has to grow at leastthree times that, which could take more than sixmonths. It=s a very gradual process; the bottom of hisfoot has to completely heal as well. ABarbaro continues to be comfortable in his righthind leg cast, so there are no immediate plans tochange it. As always, we monitor his comfort veryclosely, and we will likely change the cast within thenext two weeks,@ said Dr. Richardson. ABarbaro s vitalsigns continue to be excellent, as is his appetite. Hedefinitely enjoys his daily excursions outside to walkand graze.@ Barbaro spends about 30 to 40 minutesoutside every day, depending on the weather. Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of theUniversity of Pennsylvania s George D. WidenerHospital, where he is recovering from injuries sufferedat the Preakness on May 20.
