    What is GIS?

GIS stands for "geographic information system.

GIS is a particular form of Information System applied togeographical data.

GIS is a special kind of "information system, to manipulate, summarize, query, edit, visualize - generally, to work withinformation stored in computer databases.

GIS can be seen as a system of hardware, software and procedures

designed to support the input, management, analysis andpresentation of spatially-referenced data for solving complexplanning and management problems.

    GIS functionality

    within a browser

    is often termed WebGIS

    The Potential of WebGIS

WebGIS will make it possible to make distributed geographicinformation available to a very large worldwide audience

WebGIS will make it possible to add GIS functionality to a widerange of network-based applications in business, government, and education.

Internet users will be able to access GIS applications from their

browsers without purchasing proprietary GIS software

WebGIS means software systems that are platform independent

    WebGIS?

for modern WebGIS architecture it is evident:

    client-server-technology

platform independent server-sided data storage and processing power

    overall access via internet-browser

no software or licence costs along with increasing use of open source

    access to GIS-functions from browsers

    Web-GIS?

two aspects are still being discussed:

    free access to digital geodata

extent of available GIS-functions within the browser

requires:more than simple GIS-functions (e.g. zooming and browsing)

input and editing geodata as well as analysis of geodata
