• It has had 2 major effects:

1. Some staff have lost their jobs

2. Increase in the demand of workers in the technical aspects of work

Example:

1- Car workers loose their jobs at car manufacturing companies. This is because robots have been introduced.

2- Jobs done be clerical workers have been replaced by computers like the calculation of a payroll

What is the main reason behind all of this advancement

Why are robots used?

They are able to perform tasks in the same way with the same degree of accuracy every time. For example in :– Car assembly– Some aspects of shopping and banking– Industries :

• Small robots: required for fine detailed tasks• Large robots: required to pick up heavy objects.

• They can also be used in conditions where it is unfavourable for humans to work it; for example:– Bomb disposal– Working in space– Underwater– Sewers– mines

Example:

Production of workers’ payroll

What used to happen?- Number of hours people worked and their rate

of pay was written down manually- Wages were worked out using calculators- Results of calculations then typed out

manually.

• A computer can be used to carry out the whole process

• Only manual input required: type up the details of each worker

Bank Workers• A lot of bank cashiers are now no longer needed.

They have been replaced with the use of ATM machines and online banking.

• This means that a reduced amount of bank cashiers are required

• The number of cheques being used is also dropping because people are able to pay directly from one account to another with online banking.

• This means that a reduced amount of cheque processing centres are required

Shop Workers

• Online shopping now means that a fewer amount of workers are required. The amount of shop assistants has decreased.

• Due to the introduction of EPOS terminals fewer staff are required to organise stock control. (Barcode readers used to input product data)

Systems Analysts: analyse the existing system and recommending the design and implementation of new systems.

Computer Programmers: need to write the code for the new systems

Web designers and Authors: creation of a website for an organisation.

Computer Technicians: install and service computer hardware.

Help desk: These are people who can be contacted when people have a problem with their system.

Call Centres: Places where you can call if you have a problem
