Our year six students and their teachers put in an amazing

effort to organise another hugely successful Autumn Fair.

There was a great range of activities, including face

painting, raffles, shoot the hoops, guess the lollies, cake

stalls and so much more. There was definitely something

to cater for everyone and a great time was had by all.

A very impressive amount of well over $3000 was raised

which will be put towards the Year 6 camp in Term 4.

A great effort by all those involved. Well done!

What’s on in March/April….

That was quick! Wow – it’s the end of term one already! It feels like we only just welcomed everybody back for the new school year and a quarter of it has already gone. We have been super busy at school and in the community and have enjoyed being part of a new year of learning for our students. The Kitchen Garden fundraiser at Colonial was a huge community highlight and we have welcomed lots of new members to the P&C. Our Year 3- 6 Faction Carnival was held in beautiful weather, our surf competition was a huge success and our Year 4 students rode out to Wharncliffe Mill to camp overnight. There have been excursions across the Cape, our community chipped in to fundraise for a Shelter Box to assist Rotary in disaster relief areas and the Year 6 students raised money for their camp at the Autumn Fair. Students came back to school this year prepared and ready to learn and have shown some excellent results across all learning areas. We have plenty more in store for you next term, but please make sure that you enjoy a refreshing couple of weeks and we will see everybody back here next term. Playing at School After Hours We have spoken to students at the last two assemblies to ask them not to play at school after hours. There have been occasions this year when students have been at school on weekends and damage to buildings and property has occurred. School Security will be monitoring the school over the holiday period, so it is important that students are not implicated in any damage and everybody remains safe by playing in supervised areas. We have plenty of parks, bush, beaches and other open spaces and we ask you to please make the most of these and not play at school during the holidays. Voluntary Contributions Thank you to all of the families who have paid voluntary contributions this year. The funds collected go straight back into your school to provide the best quality resources and learning tools for our students. Eight lucky families who have paid their contributions were drawn out at assembly this morning and will receive a $60 rebate – congratulations! Don’t forget the ANZAC Day Public Holiday We are holding our school ANZAC Service on Thursday morning at 10.30 this week and you are welcome to join us. Please remember that students don’t return to school until Wednesday 26th April due to ANZAC Day being on the Tuesday. Our school will be open on Monday 24th April as this is a School Development Day for all staff. Principal Appointed for the New Primary School Lisa Helenius has been appointed as the Principal of the new primary school that will open in Rapids Landing for the start of the 2018 school year. Lisa has commenced working on the new school and is looking forward to meeting families in our community. The local intake boundaries for the new school have not yet been created. The process for establishing these boundaries is undertaken by the Education Department in consultation with the Public Transport Authority to ensure bus routes are taken into consideration. We will share this information with the community as soon as it is made publically available to us. Students who are currently enrolled in compulsory years of school (Pre-Primary to Year 6) at Margret River Primary School may be eligible to enrol at the new school, but WILL NOT have to enrol and can choose to stay at Margaret River Primary School.

Last Friday morning the annual faction surfing carnival was held at Sewars where competitors met with a consistently solid one metre swell and off-shore to side-shore wind conditions. The contest format was changed slightly from previous years with each faction having two teams, competition running over two rounds, with four surfers in the water per heat. At the end of the team rounds a Championship round was held to showcase the talents of the top male and female surfers.

All faction representatives throughout the morning displayed courage, resilience and tenacity in the challenging conditions, finishing with Forest faction winning their first surfing shield to follow up on their success in the athletics carnival.

In a closely fought boys’ Championship round, Noah Goodwin (Ocean) just edged past Brock Launders (Forest) and Alfi Donegan (Forest), whilst in the girls’ Championship round, Lilla-Grace Howard (Sun) stroked into a number of bombs throughout the morning and just managed to finish ahead of Skye Cawood (Earth) and Willow Hines (Forest).

Thank You to all the participants, for their fine efforts and great sportsmanship, the life guards for maintaining a safe surfing environment, the judges for their consistent scoring and the parents who provided great support on the beach. Final scores were: 1st - Forest with 177; 2nd - Sun with 160; 3rd - Sky with 158; 4th - Earth with 140.

On 21st March our Pre primary students celebrated Harmony

Day. We all dressed up in either traditional costumes from

other countries or orange (the official colour of Harmony Day).

We started the day with a parade and sang for parents.

Next we all joined in activities in our classrooms such as bracelet making and giving, making Vietnamese rice

rolls, painting, learning different languages and more. A fun day was had by all.

Ride to School Day

National Ride to School day was celebrated on Friday 24th

March at MRPS. It is the perfect opportunity to recognise the

important benefits to our health and our community when we

participate in healthy lifestyle choices such as riding/walking to

school. Participants received a sticker upon arrival at school.

Fact from the Bicycling WA website—In the 1970’s 80% of

school children were active on the way to school. Today, only

20% experience the joy of getting fresh air on their journey.

Seeing all the students riding and walking to school every day,

it is obvious we are well above the national average.

IT’S ON AGAIN!

THE SPARE CHANGE CHALLENEGE

Last year our P&C raised important funds that were invested straight back into our school through the 5 cent challenge. We received lots of support and lots of coins

that weren’t even a five cent piece! It’s on again this year and we’ve renamed it the SPARE CHANGE CHELLENGE to allow students to bring in any unwanted loose coins from

home - with your permission of course!

Students can bring in coins and place them in the collection jar in their classroom in the last two weeks of this term. There will even be a FREE Pizza Party for the

classroom that collects the most spare change.

Thank you for your support!

MRPS has achieved a Gold Award for CHAT (Changing Health Acting Together).

The CHAT Achievement South West Award Ceremony was held on 29th March 2017. MRPS was the first school

in WA to reach the Gold target. Representatives from CHAT schools across the south west attended the event

and MRPS set up a stall showing a snapshot of the amazing Health and Wellbeing plans/programs and activities

happening across our school.

Our school and community highly value Health and Wellbeing and this is embedded into our school’s planning

and teaching. The successful Wellbeing Expo, which was held in 2016, will run biannually and we look forward to

seeing you all there.

Student Health and Wellbeing MRPS Code of Conduct incorporates six core values:

Cooperation, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Honesty and Respect

SDERA Increase road safety awareness by spreading the message of ‘Being Seen, Being Safe’ and protecting our community’s most valuable asset - our children. The Being Seen, Being Safe road safety project by SDERA aims to influence positive road safety behaviour through actions such as reducing speed around schools and staying alert near pedestrians. The purpose of children wearing bright clothing to make them more visible in the traffic environments. Encourage drivers to use caution and slow down. What can you recall about learning to ride a bicycle or wheeled device? (Feelings, skill level, who helped you to learn to ride?) Have you been for a family ride lately? It’s not only healthy, but also an opportunity to bond together as a family while having fun. I hope you enjoyed this topic; Safety on Wheels and that we have inspired you to go on family rides through our amazing bush tracks and paths. So wipe off those cob webs, do your safety checks and have fun and safe riding over the school holidays! As this is the last newsletter for this term, a new focus area “Resilience and Wellbeing” will start next term.

Thank you for playing a vital role in your child’s road safety education. For more information visit www.sdera .wa.edu.au

Value Respect - At Margaret River Primary School, one of our core values is Respect, which is just another way to say I value and care for you and to admire someone for his or her good qualities or achievements. You should remember too that the golden rule is to treat everyone as you want them to treat you because “what goes around comes around.” You show respect to others when you listen quietly, keep unkind thoughts to yourself, speak kindly to others, willingly share and by using simple courtesies like “please” and "thank you."

Remember, that we should “fear no one, but respect everyone.”

Our message from the School Health Nurse... Welcome . My name is Karen Bryen and I am the Community Health Nurse who visits your school.

Community Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may reach their full potential. A major part of my work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health Assessment program.

Community Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessment, health counselling and referral. The services provided are free and confidential.

If you have a concern about your child’s health or development, please contact me on 9753 6476, Monday—Thursday.

Health Guidelines With the cold weather approaching fast we would like to remind parents of the Department of Health’s guidelines.

Day care and school staff have a key role in preventing the transmission of diseases in day care and the school

environment. While it is often difficult to prevent the transmission of common respiratory (colds/flu) and gastroenteritis

infections that occur, every effort should be made to minimise the spread of infection by encouraging:

staff and children at school or childcare to stay at home in the early stages of illness as at this stage they can be

infectious and spread the virus, bacteria or parasite through coughing, sneezing, contaminating surfaces and

personal contact;

school staff and students who are ill should not return to work/daycare until they are symptom free if they have a

cold or flu and for at least 24 hours if they have had gastroenteritis;

staff and children at day care, healthcare workers and food handlers who have had gastroenteritis should not

return to work until they are symptom free for at least 48 hours;

parents to seek medical advice if their child has ongoing symptoms of illness.
