Dear Robin,

Betty Gibbs91 Camino BosqueBoulder CO 80302

Enclosed are pictures and other information about Victor Johnson that you requested. I would like thepictures back when you are finished. There is no hurry on those. The obituary tells a little about hishobbies, but I will add some more from my recollection.

Uncle Victor loved to dance. Even when he was having difficulty walking and keeping his balance, hewas still a pretty good dancer. He was a long-time member ofthe Calico and Boots square dance club inBoulder. He liked to be out socializing and having fun. He had a very witty way of looking at the worldand had a great sense of humor. He was a high energy person and always involved with something.Everything he did he worked at doing very well and thoroughly, such as attaining a high rank in theKnights of Columbus Catholic men's organization. He was well respected in the KofC and inspiredpeople to reach higher than they thought they could.

Uncle Victor cared deeply about his family. He didn't marry until his late 50s,so was the big brother tohis sisters and brother and all their families. He was the family photographer, took thousands of stillpictures and was taking movies in the late 1940s with his wind-up 16mm movie camera. He had a way ofgetting us kids to smile for the camera that resulted in classic pictures. He wrote to everyone and kepteverything,so we have an amazing legacy of our family roots and history. In later years he continuedcompiling a family genealogy which he had begun in the 1940s,another precious resource about our past

and then he did some genealogy on some of his friends, too.

When Uncle Victor started college at Tri-State College in Angola Indiana,he built himselfa trailer houseto live in. He sketched out the design on a piece of cardboard -which he kept all these years -and tookpictures of the trailer with him standing by it. He kept track of his expenses and his income from severaljobs he had in college (2 or 3 at a time) -and had money left over. His sense oftaking charge, doingthings himself, and his frugality lasted all his life.Even with all the jobs (and I am sure he took time todance and party),.he maintained his grades at a high level and graduated near the top of his class.

It is hard to put over 80 years of life in a few paragraphs, and these are only the highlights. I hope thishelps. Let me know if I can provide any more information.

Sincerely,

Betty L. Gibbs

Touring the Trigen

facility's super-

sized boilers

brought to mind

some memorable

moments in boiler

history.

The Things We Take for Granted

had the opportunity to tour the Trigenfacility in Philadelphia last October.1 wasthere to do a steam seminar for this

vibrant district heating company's clients, andthey were gracious enough to walk me aroundand show me some boilers that are larger thanDelaware and absolutely humbling.

I found myself walking along this steel grat-ing that's guaranteed to induce vertigo. Ilooked down through the grating about fivestories to the ground, and then up for aboutthe same distance to the tops of the boilers, and all I could think of was that people builtthis behemoth.

Rob Scanlan,Trigen's customer servicemanager and my tour guide, smiled and said,This is a relatively small boiler,as far as dis-

trict heating plants go."I looked down and upagain, smiled nervously and nodded. Thesewere big boilers by anyone's standard.

But theit I remembered seeing a photo-graph in Combustion magazine.I'm pretty sureit was an issue from 1930.They had this photothat someone had taken inside a boiler such asthis one.The boiler in the photo was (and stillis)on the East side of Manhattan. They tookthe photo on the day that they were going tolight off that boiler for the first time. There

were about 70 men in suits, sitting at a tableand having lunch. They were inside this boiler. They were sitting around a table on a platformthat was suspended 50 feet above the bottomof the boiler and about 300 feet below the

steam drums. The caption stated that rightafter lunch, they set fire to the platform andthe table, and that was the beginning of thatboiler's service to the people of New York.Nowadays, people dangle in the dark fromboson chairs and repair the tubes inside thatboiler from time to time.Imagine that.

Someone had to build that beast on the East

River in New York City, and someone had todesign and build that (relatively)smaller behe-moth that I climbed around in Philadelphia.Butbefore they could build, they had to dream.

There was once a man named Birdsall Hol-

ly,who lived in Lockport,New York,which is

just outside of Niagara Falls. He had a boiler inhis basement, and in 1877,he ran some pipe

from his boiler to his neighbor's house. Theneighbor was pleased, and before long, Mr.Holly was running pipes to the rest of hisneighbors. He had convinced them all that itmade more sense to buy steam from him thanit did to have their own boilers in their ownbasements. And when you consider that in1877 boilers were exploding at the rate of oneabout every 36 hours, this made great sense.

In 1879,a group of Denver businessmenvisited Mr.Holly in Lockport and returned tostart the Denver City Steam Heating Compa-,

ny out there in their little frontier town, Den-ver's streets weren't even paved, but therewere several thousand feet of steam pip¢buried under them.

Not to be outdone by the relatively new,Mile-High City,Wallace Andrews, who waiJohn D. Rockefeller's business associate, rodithe train to Lockport and looked around awhat Birdsall Holly had built. When hireturned to Manhattan,Mr.Andrews found

ed the New York Steam Company.Fifty yearlater, those 70 guys in the suits were havintlunch inside that billion-Btuliboiler by th,

East River.Su,ch is the power of dA ida in thminds of people who have access to·somserious buckage.

Now,back around thii sade time, the folk

who were operating the Philadelphia ElectriCompany had a problem: They were makinand selling electricity, and getting a LOT csteam as a byproduct. They had beet\wastinthat steam into the sky, which must have Eeequite a sight. But then,in 1887, at the exacsame time that Birdsall Holly was getting'hbrainstorm, the folks at Philadelphia Electrjdecided to run a single pipe to the buildinnext door. They heated that building and thedid nothing else for,the next 19 years but maland sell electricity. How come?I figure it w;because they saw themselves as the EldctrCompany, rather than as the Energy Compan

As a result,Denver and New York City tocthe lead when it came to district hettin

ASHRAE HISTORY

April, 2004

Rocky Mountain Chapter Welcomes a New Life Member

On November 18, 2003, I had the opportunity to interview Richard T. Scott, an activemember of the Rocky Mountain and Nebraska chapters, as well as ASHRAE Region IX.

Dick was bom on September 13, 1938 in Omaha, Nebraska. He graduated from BensonHigh School in 1956 and then attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa where hereceived his Bachelor of Arts in Physics and Math in 1961. Simultaneously, he earned

his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iowa in IowaCity, Iowa where he graduated with high distinction. When Dick was just 14 years of age,he went to work for his father at Wray M. Scott Company in Omaha where he served asPresident from 1970 to 1973. In 1974, he went out on his own and founded

Environmental Systems Construction Company where he was President until 1985.While working for his father in 1967, he acquired a computer software company calledEsccomate. In 1990, Dick moved Esccomate to Fort Collins, Colorado and joinedAbrahamson Engineering, Incomorated, part time as a Senior Engineer. Dick moved onfrom both companies in 1992 and started two new ventures that he is still activelyinvolved with acting as President of Richard T. Scott, P.E.,and President and Co-Founder of Advanced Proofing Technology, Incorporated. He is now registered as aProfessional Engineer in three states.

Dick has a patent in both the United States and Canada titled (?) 'Method and apparatusfor encoding and recording (piping cost)estimating data".He has also been published inseveral trade magazines. In 1 he early 1980's, Dick's articles, "If I Were A Contractor,Here's What I'd Want My Computer To Do", "Computer Selection-lt's An Art!",andBuying A Computer?Forget Everything You Think You Kno4' were published in

Domestic Engineering magazine. In addition, in October 1988 and from February 1989to October 1990 Dick had a series of 17 articles on contractor management published inPlumbing and Mechanical magazine.

In 1964, Dick became an Associate member of the Nebraska Chapter of ASHRAE andhas been an active member since that time. Dick served as the Nebraska ChapterDirector in 19_,on the Standard 100.4: Energy Conservation in Existing IndustrialFacilities committee from 1978 to 1984, Region IX CRC Secretary in 1997, and as theRegion IX Energy Chairman. He was also active in several other organizations within theindustry. These included Mechanical Contractors Association of America, AmericanAssociation of Energy Engineers, American Society of Cost Engineers, and the NationalSociety of Professional Engineers, to name a few. Dick served as the Director of theOmaha Chapter of MCA for 20 years and 5-1/2 years for the National Chapter. Dick wasawarded the MCAA Distinguished Service Award in 1988.

When asked what he likes most about the Rocky Mountain Chapter of ASHRAE, Dickresponded that he enjoys the mutual respect for all members no matter what aspect ofthe industr'y they are involved in.

At this month's meeting, Dick will receive his award for reaching Life Member status.ASHRAE has been very fortunate for all the contributions that Dick has make to thesociety and we look forward to his continued support.

JOB LIST -RICHARD T. SCOTT, P. E.

The following pages show the projects for which Dick was theengineer of record. The list is sorted four ways: Job Name, JobType, Job Location and Seal Date. The type of sort is shown in the

upper left hand corner of each page. All jobs sealed betweenAugust, 1992 and July, 1995 were done as an outside consultantworking in the capacity of Chief Engineer for Design Mechanical,Inc. of Boulder. Only the projects which required signed andsealed drawings and/or specifications are shown. Many others werecompleted in this time period.

Three jobs deserve special mention because of their complexity. The first is Donnelly Applied Films. Year around cooling watermust be supplied to the plating ovens. This water is supplied froma closed circuit industrial evaporative cooler. The owner asked

Dick to suggest ways in which energy could be conserved. Because

of the very low temperature of the entering city water, this watermust be preheated before going to the deionizer used to prepare thewater for the product washers. All of the preheat energy isrecovered from either the oven cooling water or the heat rejectedfrom the air compressor aftercoolers.

The second project is Sheldahl. The process areas in this buildingneed to be kept at constant humidity. Dick designed an unusualsystem which utilizes low temperature ( 370F ) chilled water, gasfired duct furnaces and evaporative cooler sections to achieve thisgoal. This system saved a large initial cost compared to aconventional system with chilled water and steam humidifiers.

The third project which required special skills is Gerards FrenchBakery. This firm supplies fresh baked goods to area restaurants.

Accurate temperature and humidity control is required at relativelyhigh levels compared to comfort heating and cooling in the "proofboxes" or dough rising rooms. The room environmental control

systems which Dick designed worked so well that the owners haveasked him to cooperate with them to sell the design to other bakersnationwide.
