This assessment will help you identify what type of first aid training your firstaiders need, how many first aiders youneed and where they should be located.
Your First Aid Needs Assessment should consider the following topics:
* The nature of the work, the hazards and the risks:
* The nature of the workforce
* The organisation’s history of accidents and illness
* The needs of travelling, remote and lone workers
* Work patterns such as shift work
* The distribution of the workforce
* The remoteness of the site from emergency medical services
* Employees working on shared or multi-occupied sites
* Annual leave and other absences of first aiders
* First-aid provision for non-employees
* The size of the organisation
It is the responsibility of an employer to decide how many employees are trained as First Aiders, as well as which type of training they need. Assessing therisks of your workplace and referring to HSE regulations on the appropriaterequirements for your organisation will help you make the right decision.
Employers should consider the following when selecting individuals to attend:
* Reliability, disposition andcommunication skills
* Aptitude and ability to absorb newknowledge and learn new skills
* Ability to cope with stressful andphysically demanding emergency
procedures
* Normal duties are such that they may be left to go immediately and rapidly
to an emergency

Advice For EmployersOn the 1st October 2009, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) implemented new rules foremployers on first aid at work. Employers must by law carry out a first aid training needsassessment. There are now two types of first aiders: First Aid at Work (3 day course) and anEmergency First Aid at Work (1 day course). In addition, the HSE now recommends that all firstaiders attend annual refresher training of 3 hours.
More information and guidance canbe found at www.hse.gov.uk/firstaidor contact us and we may be able tohelp you decide what level of trainingyour staff team require.
