General introduction The 3000KVA ferroalloy refining furnace, which adopts electro - silicothermic

process as its major method, are mainly used for ferroalloys, like FeMn, FeNi and low carbon ferrochrome smelting. Here take low carbon ferrochrome as example:

I. Electro-Silicothermic Process for Low/Micro Carbon Ferrochrome

1) Raw materials

Chrome ore, SiCr alloy and lime are use as raw materials.

2) Reaction

The reaction formulas are show in following:

2Cr2O3+3Si=4Cr+3SiO2

2FeO+Si=2Fe+SiO2

3) Operation technology

Low carbon ferrochrome production is intermittent operation, with different

electrics through each smelting phase, as 260-290V in general melting and 150-170V

during refining phase.

SiCr alloy is used as reducing agent in smelting.

To prevent arc erosion and suitable for power transmission, there should be

150~200mm liquid remains in bottom of furnace.

There are two materials feeding method adopted in smelting: one is mixed

feeding, that is chrome ore, lime and SiCr alloy are mixed together and put into

furnace together; another is batch feeding, namely to mix the raw materials together

and put into furnace in several times. This is the melting period.

Refining period defines from total melting of materials to taping. Complete

stirring needed in order to promote reduction reaction in this period.

Sampling will make from central point of three electrodes before taping for Si

content judge and adjustment. Add SiCr alloy or Cr ore to fulfill qualified

compositions before taping.

The liquid will cast into mould after deslagging, and then surface cleaning,

granulated, and packed.

4) Ingredients

Raw materials chemical compositions:

Cr2O345%,FeO23%,SiO25%,Al2O313%,CaO2%,MgO8%,C0.03%,P0.

100kg Cr ore, 84kg lime, 40kg SiCr alloy

Unit consumption of materials:

Chrome ore/ (kg/t) 1500-1600

SiCr alloy/ (kg/t) 620-640

Lime / (kg/t) 1350-1500

Mg brick/ (kg/t) 30-40

Electrode / (kg/t) 30-40

Power consumption/ (kW·h/t) 2000-2400

Ⅱ.Equipment technical parameters

Furnace top feeding method is applied in the refining furnace.

Ⅲ. Major technical parameters

3.1 Mechanical introductions

1) Furnace body

Consists of furnace shell, troughs and etc

4000mm diameter furnace shell welded by 20mm thickness 16Mn steel plate,

applied with refractory materials lining, which is fixed by angle pin together with

tilting platform.

2) Furnace cover is fixed type with gas hood, installed in 2nd platform layer. With

diameter of 4600mm and 1200mm height, there are 5 manual operating doors around.

Water cooling systems equipped in the top of furnace cover, along with three

materials charging holes and the 4th dedusting hole. There are totally three electrode

holes on the top.

3) Tilting device is consists by rail, oil cylinder, curved frame, tilting platform

and etc.

4) Electrode lifting

Consists by oil cylinder, lifting column, guide roller, electrode arm, insulation

components and etc

Cooling: OFWF

3) Low voltage

Mainly consists by power supply, electric control and electrode adjustor.

Electrode lifting max speed: 2m/min rise speed; 1.5m/min drop speed

Electrode lifting response time: start ≤0.15S; brake≤0.1S
