FEAST OF STS. SIMON & JUDE APOSTLES Feastday: October 28th

Both Simon and Jude were ordinary men who were chosen by Jesus himself to teach others

about God’s love and to “make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19) Their lives help us to

understand that even the most average people can become saints when they decide to follow

Jesus.

Both of these men were known by other names during their lives. Simon was often called

“the Zealot.” A zealot is a person who is strongly committed to something. In Simon’s case, he firmly believed in the importance of people following Jewish law. Once he met Jesus, his life

was changed and he became convinced that the most important thing was to follow Jesus and His teachings.

Jude was also known as “Jude Thaddeus.” People used this formal title so that he was not

confused with Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus and handed Him over to be arrested. Jude is the patron saint of hopeless

cases and desperate situations. People often pray to Jude when they feel that there is no one else to turn to. They ask Jude to

bring their problem to Jesus. Because Jude had such great faith, we know that nothing is impossible for those who believe in

the Lord.

Simon and Jude traveled together to teach others about Jesus. Because of their eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ miracles and His

Death and Resurrection, many people became believers and were baptized. Simon and Jude died for their faith on the same

day in Beirut.

We honor their feast day on October 28th. These two saints remind us to learn all we can about Jesus and to share it with others,

as they did. —Exert from SaintsResource.com

COLLECT PRAYER FROM THE FEASTDAY MASS OF STS. SIMON & JUDE

O God, who by the blessed Apostles have brought us to acknowledge your name, graciously grant, through the intercession of Saints

Simon and Jude, that the Church may constantly grow by increase of the peoples who believe in you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ,

your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

AN INVITATION —17 TH SACERDOTAL ANNIVERS ARY

As I sing my heart’s thanksgiving to the Lord for the gift of Priesthood, I

humbly request the honor of your presence at the Eucharistic

Celebration on November 15th at St. Joseph Parish at 10:00AM, on the

occasion of my 17th Sacerdotal Anniversary.

“You have given it all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours:

do with it what You will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is

enough for me.” — St. Ignatius of Loyola

ONGOING CATECHESIS | L ITURGICAL CATHECES IS O N THE EUCHARIS T

Fr. Randy Guarino will give a brief Liturgical Catechesis on the Eucharist at the start of all weekend

Masses. The presentations continue each week until the Catechesis is complete. Please arrive for

Mass at least 15 minutes early to dispose yourself for entering into the liturgy; or come even earlier

and join the parishioners in the Rosary beginning 30 minutes prior to Mass!

AN INVITATION

Our Pastoral Assistants for Faith Formation, Mike and Mary Kay

Acheson, invite you and your family to sign up for Project Nazareth, a new

program we are introducing to our parishes this year. Signups are open and

ongoing.

Project Nazareth is a family program. The family is the “domestic Church”

(Pope John Paul II), where our faith begins and is most ingrained and affected. Project Nazareth is designed to preview the readings we

hear at Mass each and every week. Each week, you’ll receive a Toolkit for the upcoming Sunday Mass readings, which includes:

Activities, prayers, and readings

Questions to read, discuss, and ponder together

The goal is to introduce these activities throughout the week, in a way that fits well with the particular needs of your own

family.

SPECIAL EVENT—ST. THOMAS MISSION Clallam Bay & Neah Bay families with children ready to prepare for First Reconciliation and First Holy

Communion are invited to attend an information/pumpkin carving event at St. Thomas Mission

after the 11:00AM Mass on Sunday, October 31st . We look forward to seeing you there.

For more information on either of these items/events or to sign up, please contact Mike or Mary Kay

at 360-452-2351, or [email protected]

SUNDAY DEVOTIONS | A ME DI T A T I ON ON N E XT WEEK ’S MASS READINGS

October 31, 2021 | 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading— This passage, the first part of the Hebrew creed, sums up the basic principle of the Mosaic Law: Since the Lord

alone is God, Israel must love God with an undivided heart. [Deuteronomy 6:2-6]

Responsorial Psalm—“I love you, O Lord, my strength.” [Psalm 18]

Second Reading—The ancient priesthood consisted of priests who died and had to be replaced, but the priesthood of Jesus is

forever. Jesus is the high priest, “higher than the heavens,” a priest who has no need to offer sacrifice daily for sins but who of-

fered Himself once and for all. [Hebrews 7:23-28]

Gospel—When Jesus is asked which of the commandments is “first” or most important, He points to love of God and says that

love of neighbor is essentially a part of (or synonymous with) that same command. It means that all of the Mosaic laws can be

summarized in terms of loving God and loving our neighbor. What’s more, this isn’t simply a “New Testament idea” that

somehow gets introduced later. Jesus is essentially quoting a statement form Leviticus chapter 19, in the heart of the very

hard-to-understand and difficult-to-follow laws that says the same thing about the centrality of love. We might say again that

the specific laws are all “means to the end” of our having loving relationships with God and with one another. Love is the goal,

or end. The specific rules are ways to help get us there. [Mark 12:28-34]

RELIG IOUS EDUCATION

CATECHISM CORNER — From the desk of Mike Acheson We had a young girl ask us recently, "What's the difference between sin and saints?" In one sense a lot; in another, not so much.

Searching in the Catechism for something recently my hand landed on Mercy and Sin. This moves on to the "Definition of Sin,"

the "Different kinds of Sin," the "Gravity of Sin" and on it went.

We all sin, in fact it is written in Romans 3:23 that all "have sinne d and fall sho rt o f the glo ry o f Go d ." Paul always gives us the

truth, but he always counters truths that we might find uncomfortable -- like the reading above -- with a call to faith and re-

demption through Christ.

We know what happened in the Garden of Eden in the first chapter of Sacred Scripture. Through temptation and disobedience

we inherited Original Sin from the stewards of the Garden and humanity, Adam and Eve. This "tind e r fo r sin . . . this inclinatio n

for sin" is what we, as humans, wrestle with each day; another name for this is concupiscence, simply the proclivity to do things against the

will of God.

Paul, again, tells us how it is: "I d o no t und e rstand m y o wn actio ns. Fo r I d o no t d o what I want, but I d o the ve ry thing I hate . . .

for I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do." (Romans 7:15-20)

Venial sin does not separate us from God, but it "we ake ns charity. It im pe d e s the so ul's pro gre ss in the e xe rcise o f the virtue s . . .

And un-repented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin." (CCC 1863)

St. Augustine said to us, "While he is in the flesh, man cannot help but have at least some light sins. But do not despise these

sins which we call 'light'; if you take them for light when you weigh them, tremble when you count them. A number of light objects makes a great mass; a number of drops fills a river; a number of grains make a heap. What then is our hope? Above

all, confession . . ." (CCC 1863)

The saints are saints because of their heroic virtue, but this did not come about without their strong will to do good. Many

saints, like St. Augustine, were misdirected sinners, who had an about-face, turning their energies and souls to God, knowing

that in the end "no thing is co nce ale d that will no t be re ve ale d ." (Luke 12:2) Humility before God, Jesus is telling us, is where we

need to be.

SERVICE | RESPECT LIFE GROUP

RESPECT LIFE MONTH: OCTOBER 2021

Each week in October we continue to share with you some of the worthy agencies that we support through charita-

ble donations in order to promote the culture of life in the world today.

Silent No More Awareness Campaign raises awareness of the devastating consequences of abortion and helps to

make the public aware of the devastation abortion brings to women, men, families and society. The campaign seeks

to expose and heal the secrecy and silence surrounding the emotional and physical pain of abortion.

Students for Life of America exists to recruit, train, and mobilize the pro-life generation to abolish abortion. They

launch and support groups on middle school, high school, college and medical and law school campuses throughout

the nation to:

Educate other young people about the violence of abortion.

Create new pro-lifers.

Transform campuses into places that support pregnant and parenting students.
