Paddle Trek 2015 66 Paddlers Explore the Watershed
This past Saturday, August 1st
, we hosted our 7th AnnualPaddle Trek, a 15-mile guidedtrip from Mt. Vernon Villageto Wayne Village. This year,66 paddlers (our largestgroup ever!) joined in the funand 38 completed the entiretrip, just ahead of thethunderstorm, ending with
ice cream at Tubby’s. Thank you to all of the individuals andbusinesses who helped make this event possible: Thelandowners who allowed us to portage across theirproperties; the volunteers who portaged boats, providedon-the-water support and drove the shuttles; Tubby’s whoserved free ice cream; Kents Hill School who bused paddlersback to their cars; and the other business sponsorsincluding Clark Marine, Fayette Country Store, HorneConstruction, Mt. Calling all Boat Inspectors! Volunteers Needed for Late Summer
Weekends
Volunteer courtesy boat inspectors (CBIs) are needed forthe Androscoggin Lake, Flying Pond and Parker Pond boatlaunches from now through Labor Day weekend. Many ofour hardworking CBI staff leave for college at the end ofAugust, which makes our volunteers an even more essentialpart of safeguarding our watershed from the threat ofinvasive plants. Flying Pond Watershed Survey Remediation Work Underway Last year, the 30 Mile River Watershed Association, inpartnership with the Flying Pond Improvement Association,the Maine DEP, the towns of Mount Vernon and Vienna,and many trained volunteers, conducted a watershed surveyof Flying Pond. The purpose of the survey was to protectand improve water quality by (1) identifying anddocumenting potential sources of pollution from erosionand runoff and (2) recommending solutions to fix theproblems. Polluted runoff carries nutrients that degradewater quality and is one of the biggest threats to our lakes. Survey teams of trained volunteers and technical leadersvisited all developed properties and roads of participatinglandowners within Flying Pond’s watershed and identified
that are impacting or have the potential84 erosion sitesto impact water quality. They also made specificrecommendations for how each site could be mitigated. This summer, remediation work began with the help of ourYCC crew and individual landowners. Fixing the remainingsites will require efforts by individuals, road associations,town officials, the lake association and 30MRWA. Payingattention to run-off problems and identifying new sites inneed of work should be continual activities of thoseinterested in protecting these lakes.
