REGENERATION OF THE AREA
The Old Market area in the City of Bristol dates back to as early as 900 AD. Since the 12th Century it has functioned as the primary eastern entrance to the city. The heritage of Old Market has been protected and maintained over many years as it contains the most important collections of historic buildings in the city. Its unique character, diverse range of buildings, central location and key opportunity sites, make it an ideal place for regeneration with a distinct identity as Bristol’s independent retail centre with a growing population of professionals and young families.
The city of Bristol continues to grow at an exponential rate with regeneration projects planned across the entire city. Including the development of Bristol Temple Quarter a sustainable and flourishing urban new quarter and a brand new Redcliff quarter set to have some of the best bars, restaurants and shopping in the city. The existing Cabot Circus, is deemed “the best shopping centre in Europe” and all of this just a short walk from The Brassworks in Old Market.
WHY BRASSWORKS?
In the early 1700’s the Bristol Brass & Wire Company was created by a group of men called the Quakers. They discovered that combining zinc (the ore Calamine) and copper produced brass. They wanted to stop all import of foreign brass from Holland and thus established the Bristol Mill Brass Works. It is estimated that the production levels of brass in Bristol during this time was between 400-533 tons a year. It has also been reported that there were 25 furnaces at Baptist Mills, which used 200 tons of copper a year and estimated it produced some 250-260 tons of brass a year.
