7’S PERSPECTIVE
SPREAD SPRED is working with Patrick McGowan and Fr. James Donovan to find the needed adult volunteers and families who
live with people with developmental, intellectual, and learning challenges no matter their age or level of abilities.
SPRED is a ministry built on relationships who meet in a beautiful space. Each session ends with a beautifully set table
with food and drink. It is a different kind of catechesis developed specifically for our friends with these special
needs. It has been in our Archdiocese for over 55 years and is now worldwide. Several parishioners came to our last
meeting and we would to see more. Parents and interested men and women are invited to our next SPRED Information
Gathering on Monday, December 9, 7:00 p.m., in our rectory.
Dear Parishioners,
I hope Thanksgiving was the celebration you hoped and planned for.
I appreciated the many people who came to the Parish Eucharist. It was truly
a wonderful celebration. Amazingly we moved on to Advent. The kids are
practicing for their Christmas pageants. Each year a classic is produced. Nothing
like live theater with little people. As we journey toward Christmas let us find the
time to reflect on the true meaning of the birth of Christ. We do busyness well let’s try to create some quiet
time to explore the depth of the mystery of the Savior arriving as a baby born to unlikely parents in a most
unlikely circumstance.
For you history lovers here is a great nugget. Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Alberto Rojas was named
coadjutor of San Bernardino, California. He will do well there. We wish him well. How times have changed!
Did you know that in 1915 Cardinal George Mundelein was almost appointed Bishop of Buffalo New York?
The British government protested to Pope Benedict XV that having someone of German descent so close to
the US- Canada border could be dangerous. Remember World War I was raging in Europe. The Pope
switched the assignments, so Chicago got Mundelein and Buffalo got Brian Dougherty and the rest is history.

2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT IN THE DAYS TO COME . . . .
SEEK PEACE In the days to come...Let us seek peace. As we reflect on this invita-
tion, we may be tempted to ask what exactly do we mean by “the days to
come.” Is this an invitation to seek peace during the Advent and Christmas
seasons? Or is this a recognition that as followers of Christ, we’re asked to
advance peace always?
The prophet Isaiah takes the long view, using poetry to describe a time when the strong and the weak -- the
predators and their prey -- live in peace. God’s holy mountain is an idyllic place where the wolf and the lamb, the
leopard and the kid, the baby and the cobra share a home free from fear. They respect each other and nurture one
another. Beautiful poetry indeed.
If we replace the images of nature with some well recognized human “tribes,” it becomes clearer that to
achieve the vision of a peaceful world, we need to start in the here and now. Rich and poor. Pro-life and Pro-choice,
Democrats and Republicans. Management and Labor. Believers and Non-believers. The list goes on as we separate
ourselves based on race, religion, geography, income, gender, sexual orientation, politics and power dynamics.
On this second Sunday of Advent, we are asked to be peace seekers. The first step is to examine how
comfortable we are reaching out to those we perceive as the wolf, the bear or the adder in an effort to better
understand them.

RED TAG NEWS...........UNWRAPPED GIFTS ARE DUE DEC 15. You will soon see one of the most visible signs of the upcoming Christmas season. ...the RED TAGS indicating
the age, gender, and wish requests for disadvantaged children/youth in the city. This program - unique to
St. Barnabas - helps fill the need to make Christmas possible for two charities (Catholic Charities and the
Salvation Army) who have both indicated in the past that our donations to them have kept many from being
disappointed.
Our parish is truly unbelievable in the absolute generosity and kindness and caring demonstrated in the
program. Please consider taking one or more tag(s) if you can. We will also provide envelopes for
monetary gifts and/or gift cards if you cannot find time to shop. This will cover any red tags not picked up or some taken
and presents not turned in for them.
As always, if you have any questions or wish to help in this, please call Nancy at 773-239-2293. Thank you so much for
helping this program.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC YOUTH CONFERENCE 2019 (NCYC)
Blessed Broken Given was the theme of this years National Catholic Youth Conference
2019 (NCYC). Selected by the Archdiocese of Chicago, Whitney Young High School
Senior Julia Medina and Lane Tech Sophomore Jordan Lam were delegated
Ambassador Leaders. This years NCYC was held in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Lucas
Stadium. It was an exciting, biennial three-day experience of prayer, community,
and empowerment for over 23,0000 Catholic teens. They enjoyed speakers,
workshops, live music, electrifying large sessions, and an amazing opening and
closing liturgy that included a direct message from Pope Francis.
Pilgrims attending the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) received a surprise message via video from
Pope Francis. In the message, delivered Thursday, Nov. 22, Pope Francis shared the following with NCYC attendees:
"I send you an affectionate greeting and my prayers at this moment of encounter that you are living. May it be
an opportunity to strengthen and deepen your faith and communion. May it light your missionary hearts with the
courage and strength to live in and with the Lord always as a church sent forth. Today, as in the beginning, we
need to go out to meet each person, as it is our mission to do so, especially with those most separated and those
who are suffering most. We must reach the existential peripheries of our world. You know from your everyday
life that many are alone, that many do not know Jesus. Go, go and take the Lord with you. Go and fill your
surroundings, even the digital ones. Not of convictions. Not to convince others. Not to proselytize but to bear
witness of the tenderness and mercy of Jesus. I bless you with all my heart. And don't forget to pray for me.
Thank you."
Teenagers traveled with their Chaperones from every state in the United States. and many other countries
from around the world. The best part was that they were able to be a part of an enormous community of peers who
love Jesus, who embrace their Catholic heritage and experience the power of the Holy Spirit.
Julia and Jordan prayed all families of St. Barnabas Parish, all those in need of all prayers, families and
friends. The next NCYC will be held in 2021.
Parish Life
Recently, junior high students participated in our second Electives morning. This time, the special classes were expanded
to 6th-8th grades and included STEM, personal finance, jewelry-making, sign language, photography, debate, baking,
public speaking, dance and more! These classes allow faculty to share talents and interests they otherwise wouldn't be
able to, and students to learn about topics they wouldn't otherwise cover. Students and faculty were very engaged in
their selected activities and we are so happy to be able to offer these special classes!
