2nd Word Work 5/4-5/8 Learning Focus: Unit 24 - Comparatives

Comparatives: are words used to describe one or more than one thing. These words often end with the letters -er (bigger, taller, faster…) or -est (biggest, tallest, fastest…). Syllable - a single, unbroken sound (or beat) of a word. Teachers often have students clap out the syllables of a word. Ex: car = 1 syllable, apple = 2 syllables, elephant = 3 syllables

Monday

1. Unit 24 BLM 10 Comparative Frieze Card - Read the base word in the first section (dark, fast, bright, quick). Then read the matching comparatives with -er and -est endings. *Fun Fact: The base words are 1 syllable words, adding -er and -est turns them into 2 syllable words.

2. Reading Passage 1 - The Cleverest Tail - Highlight, underline, or circle words you find with -er and -est endings.

Tuesday

1. Unit 24 BLM 10 Comparative Frieze Card - Read the base word in the second section (big, hot). Then read the matching comparatives with -er and -est endings. *Challenge: Reread the words from Monday.

The Luckiest Puppy

Kelly looked at the puppy. “This is the saddest day ofmy life,” she said.

“Come on,” said James. “You know we can’t keep him,even if he is the cutest puppy in the world.”

Kelly followed James up the wide steps of the largesthouse on the street. The puppy wriggled deeper into herarms. James knocked his loudest knock. A boy and hismom opened the door. They smiled the brightest smiles.

Deserts

A desert can be one of the hottest placeson earth. Or it can be one of the coldest. Deserts getfewer than ten inches of rain per year. Deserts are thedriest places on earth.

Desert plants often have smaller leaves than plants thatlive in other places. Some desert plants have leaves thatlook like needles. They are pricklier than most plants.

Many animals in the hot deserts sleep during the day.They may look as though they are lazier than otheranimals. But they are wiser. The desert is cooler atnight. It is easier for the animals to hunt when it is cool.

Deserts are the hardest places to live.Only plants and animals that cansurvive in the driest of placeslive in deserts.
